Please, list members, do not get overly excited about the internet posting that James Meredith was the son of Sampson Meredith. I, too, had seen that website some time ago. Since I have seriously researched every known possible father for James Meredith, I had researched Sampson. At least, I had researched him as much as possible. The truth of the matter is that, for the most part, Prince George Co., VA records were destroyed by fire in the Civil War. Among the few records remaining was a will for Sampson Meredith which named son Samson, dtr Elizabeth, son Lewis, son Thomas and wife Elizabeth. No son James is mentioned. I am aware that it is possible Sampson did not name all his children in his will; however, I personally have not been able to find any other existing record that even suggests a son named James. I wrote Glen D. McDowel, the author of the above mentioned webpage, on two separate occasions asking for his source (or sources) of information and he did not respond to either of my messages. In our strong desire to extend our family pedigree charts, we must realize that lists and websites should be regarded only as clues and that we must prove before we blindly accept. Let's not become *collectors of names* but instead rely on good, hard, research! BTW, the father of Mildred Bagby has not been proved either (to my knowledge). Janice Meredith
