Sir I am now engaged in canvassing this District.<A HREF="http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/r?ammem/#I53">1</A> There is the most decided change that I have ever witnessed any where If I had sufficient force to protect the people, there is little doubt but what you would receive a majority of the Votes in my District. Is it possible to furnish me (3000) three thousand men they are needed in the District at any rate, threatened every day with an attack and I have not a sufficient force to make a proper defence of the country. I respectfully request that reinforcements be sent me immediately<A HREF="http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/r?ammem/#I54">2</A> [Note 1 General Meredith was commander of the District of Western Kentucky.] [Note 2 Though no reply from Lincoln has been located, reinforcements were sent to Meredith.
