Hello Friends, I offer profound respect to all of our MEREDITH/MERIDETH (etc + spelling varieties) colleagues. Especially to the kind souls offering their opinions (listed below). I do not have the "comfuser knowledge" to organize or setup a spread sheet, with the final or selected subjects, that the majority of us would eventually desire. I just offered the suggestion off the top of my head ( I really got this so called brainstorm of mine from a spreadsheet or graph offered by RONHM@aol.com covering another subject awhile back). As you might determine, from the prevous sentence, I would/could not be the party to set this chart or spreadsheet up because of my "duh factor". I hope all of you are well and your spirits have been refreshed from viewing the 911 ceremonies.....I confess a few tears were shed by me..... To anyone going into another's home or place one soon see that they have what I call mind joggers. These are important vises to the one you are visiting but rarely completely understood by you. I don't believe there is a one of us that don't have some kind of a brick wall or two. So what is the answer - I don't know. I am researching the family of JAMES F. MEREDITH who was born in Illinois 1 Feb 1830 and died in Bates Co., MO, 30 Jun 1901. James married Esther W. DEAN 17 Sep 1864 in Cuyahoga Co., OH. James and Esther are found in the 1870 and 1880 census living in Detroit Twp, Pike Co., IL. Their children were Clarissa b. abt 1865, Percy W. b. Mar 1867, Margaret b. abt 1868 and Erin A. b. Dec 1871 - (all born in Illinois). By the 1880 census only Percy and Erin are still with the family. Sometime between 1880 and 1900, James moved his family to Bates County, Missouri. James had a brother, DANIEL W. MEREDITH b. 1 Feb 1825 Pike Co., IL, and d. 17 Jan 1892 Springfield, Greene Co., MO. Daniel is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Bates Co., MO. That is the same cemetery where James & Esther Meredith are buried. Daniel was living in Bates Co., MO, by 1869, when he married Bertha Jane ROSE 18 Apr 1869. It is assumed that Daniel is the reason James moved to Bates Co., MO. An Ancestral File posting on FamilySearch.org shows Daniel Woodrow Meredith as the son of WILLIAM MEREDITH and MARGARET WHITE. This certainly makes sense since William Meredith seems to have been a pioneer resident of Pike County, Illinois. There is a record of Margaret Meredith marrying John LYSTER in Pike Co., IL, on 19 Jan 1842. This would appear to be William Meredith's widow (he died 10 May 1839 in Pike Co, IL). By the 1850 census, Daniel and James Meredith were of age and no longer "at home". I cannot find them in the 1850 census. D.W. MEREDITH is listed as a member of the 5th Illinois Volunteers of the Mexican War, organized in May 1847. Daniel may have been away with the troops in 1850. I can't find James Meredith at all in the 1850 census. Can anyone tell me more about the WILLIAM MEREDITH line? Was Margaret his second wife? Is he the son of DANIEL MEREDITH and HANNA COOK? And the grandson of JAMES MEREDITH and MILDRED BAGBY of North Carolina? Are there sources to verify the information? And, is the above JAMES MEREDITH the son of William Meredith & Margaret White? Thanks very much for whatever information you MeredithList subscribers can provide. Shirley Webb shirlwbb@ktc.com

Subj: Explanation. Date: 8/19/2002 5:26:09 AM Central Standard Time From: kenmero@iprimus.com.au (ken meredith) To: Bluchp56@aol.com (Bluchp56@aol.com) G'day Jerry, Richard and cousins. As a way of explanation. I've been collecting all and everything I can on the Meredith name for nigh on 20 years in an attempt to ascertain the Australian roots. I do not have the intellectual experience or authority to dismiss out of hand anything that I do uncover. I file everything away in the expectation that someday it may come into use for me or others. My background is in law enforcement, retired Detective Sergeant, where I had to deal only in facts but could never dimiss hearsay, rumor or even gossip in the search of the truth. Anything that I can verify by official source documents, not just that that has been published, I have in folder form. This with everything else I collect I willingly pass on for those with the expertise to judge on with the understanding that it is raw data only and has not been in any way substantiated. I trust that this may explain the reason I forwarded to the list the document claiming to be the Meredith Pedigree. Yesterday was Long Tan day here in Australia when we commemorate those we lost in Vietnam named after the battle where we we lost our greatest number of young soldiers. Regards to all from Ken Meredith from Timbertown in Australia.

James Pitt Meredith, his mother, and his four sisters are found on the 1850 census in Iowa. Shortly after the census was taken his mother married Noah Roberts Jones, a Welshman, who had also been widowed. In the next couple of years both the mother and the step-father of James died, leaving five Meredith children and one Jones daughter orphans in a strange land. We do not know where James Pitt Meredith was between the 1850 and 1880 census. The 1880 census shows James living in a boarding house in Fort Benton, Choteau County, Montana. He was working as a farm laborer. The 1900 census shows him at Highwood, Choteau County, Montana, working as a ranch laborer. He boarded with Isaac and Martha McCord, their son-in-law Jos. C. T. Braithwaite and his wife Ida (a step-daughter of Isaac), and a nephew Wm. R. S. McCord. Both the 1880 and 1900 census show James as single. So it appears he did not marry. In November 1901 and January 1902 James wrote letters from Highwood to his youngest sister Mary (Meredith) Bryant, who was living in Pleasant Grove, Utah. In these he mentions having just heard of the marriage of his sister Margaret to Alva Mason after the death of her first husband Hugh O'Neil. He also expressed a desire to visit Margaret when he got enough money. At that time Margaret was living in Phillipsburg, Granite County, Montana. She moved for a time to California but returned to Montana shortly before her death. The 1900 census shows he worked fewer months than year than the other male adults in the home. It is possible that he was in poor health at this time. We would like to find out when and where James died and where he was buried. It appears he died prior to the 1910 census; for sure by 1915 when Margaret died.
Hi Ken! I have copied parts 1,2, and 4 of the MEREDITH Lineage that you have kindly shared, but part 3 is missing from my messages. I would really appreciate it if you could send it to me. My MEREDITH family emigrated from Ireland (Laois/Queens County) to Ontario, Canada from 1842-47. Thomas MEREDITH c. 1780 who supposedly had three wives, had children John 1802, Maria 1803, Hester 1809, Jane 1814 (my GG), Susannah 1824, Sarah 1825, Edward c.1826, Jeremiah 1827, Rice 1828. All but Edward and Jeremiah emigrated, and Jeremiah's descendants are still in the family home in Ballyfin as of Summer 2002 ... my GG Jane MEREDITH and her husband William SCYTHES and children left that home in 1847! Several descendants of Thomas's children in Canada are researching the MEREDITH family and have reached a "Brick wall" about Thomas and his wives. Any info would be appreciated by all of us. Thanks from Linda Sherlock

Cadwalladr was not the last king of the britons and Meredith as a patronym is virtually impossible to trace with accuracy beyond 1400. Most books on genealogy printed in the 19th century were hopelessly inaccurate or works of vanity with no truth - Burkes peerage being a good example of a work done by a notorious forger of pedigrees. She died August 1796, in Surry County, North Carolina. James died May 1790, in Surry County, North Carolina. James Meredith was Welsh, but it is not known if he, or a previous ancestor, was the immigrant. The earliest documentation of James and Mildred Bagby is in 1760 and 1762 when the birth and baptism of two of their sons, Samuel & Daniel, is recorded in St. James Northam Parish of Goochland County, Virginia. This was documented in the Douglas Register. A deed dated 20 May 1764 shows John Woodson sold to James Meredith 150 acres in Goochland County, Virginia on both sides of the James River. I believe this is not our James, but the James Meredith who died in Cumberland County, Virginia in 1750 or 51. Cumberland County was formed from Goochland County, Virginia in 1749 from that part south of the James River. Possibly our James and his family migrated to the Bedford County area of Virginia by or before 1769. According to family tradition James Meredith Jr. married Mary Crews in Bedford County, Virginia in 1769 and it is possible the entire Meredith family was there at that time. James Meredith, his wife Mildred Bagby and the family probably entered North Carolina in 1771 as he appears on the Surry County tax roll that year. Surry County was formed from Rowan County in 1770 and at the present time no Rowan Co records have been found for him. James and his family probably came into North Carolina on the Great Wagon Road, which came in at the northeast corner of what was then Surry County, North Carolina (that part is now Stokes County.) Possibly James marked off his land at that time. He entered two 600-acre parcels of land in May 1779; they were surveyed 4 May 1780 with his sons Samuel and Daniel serving as chain carriers. The land was recorded on 3 Nov 1784. According to the book Stokes County Heritage, tobacco is king in Stokes County and has been since the county was formed. Stokes County is one of six counties in North Carolina that have always primarily depended on tobacco for its income. It therefore seems safe to assume that James raised tobacco. Mildred Bagby was the wife of James Meredith. Her parentage has not been established at this time. It is possible her father was John Bagby and that her brothers were John (b Hanover Co, Va 1737,md Theodosia Morris), Thomas, and Richard Bagby. It has also been surmised that James Meredith had been married once before and his older children were by that first marriage, with the younger children by his marriage to Mildred. There is no proof and this is merely a supposition. Children: 2. i William b. ca 1742. 3. ii James b. ca 1747. 4. iii John b. 1749?. 5. iv Mary b. Dear beckyjh@telkomsa.net I have been "distracted" for a period of time....hence the delay in answering your comments re: not having a care about any other country ...Of course we realize that our beloved surname, no matter how spelled or pronounced, existed, either now or at a earlier times, in history. I suggest you give this site MEREDITH-L Rootsweb a "chance one's arm" * We have attempted to integrate, in this site, all folks. regardless of Country, Race or varieties of spelling they may have. If you have a particular rotten egg or tomato to throw...please do not hesitate to throw my way! Not to the rootsweb family..especially MEREDITH-L They are the GREATEST OF COMMUNICATORS "I love my MEREDITH surname..no matter how spelled etc" Jerry Young Bluchp56@aol.com SO..Becky Welcome aboard! at least for awhile.. I hope.. Best of luck in your search * = English term for Chance >Subj: Re: [MEREDITH-L] MEREDITH, Samuel...b. Abt 1803, d. My family is from Thomas Meredith who came from Wales first to Hagerstown, MD then settled in Monongalia Co. WV. He later died in Ontario, Canada about 1824. I have collected a good bit of info which is on my website and always welcome new information and corrections: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kmclamb
