Subj: Emigrant Savings Bank (Information on this subject described within) http://www.nygbs.org/info/articles/emigrantbank.html Using the Records of the Emigrant Savings Bank by Suzanne McVetty, C.G. Originally published in The NYG&B Newsletter, Winter 1998 Ann (Dillon) (Jennings) Prendergast was born in County Galway, Ireland, and resided with her family in Mount Mary in Galway. Sometime before 1852, Ann's parents, Robert Dillon and Ann Kelly, passed away, leaving four children. Ann's brother John remained in Ireland as did her sister Elizabeth, while her sister Jane lived in New York. It is very possible that Jane, following the Irish pattern of chain migration, helped her sister Ann by sending funds to pay her passage to America. Chain migration refers to the Irish custom of sending funds back to Ireland to pay the passage for the next to come over. Following the example of previous Irish immigrants, Ann left Ireland for Liverpool, England, where she booked passage on the ship Rosette to New York. She arrived in New York harbor in May 1848, at the height of exodus from Ireland during the Potato Famine. Ann Dillon first married Edward Jennings, with whom she had two children, Peter H. Jennings and Mary Ann Jennings. By 1852 Ann married Peter Prendergast, but had no children from her second marriage. Ann and Peter Prendergast ran a boarding house at 139 Washington Street, Manhattan. Thinking of her daughter's future, Ann arrived at the Emigrant Savings Bank on December 14, 1852, to open a savings account in trust for Mary Ann Jennings, then six years old. On May 4, 1865, Ann (Dillon) (Jennings) Prendergast died. Her bank account was released on May 3, 1866 to her husband P. Prendergast, who had Letters of Administration for her estate. What would you give to have Ann Prendergast as your ancestor? If you are an Irish researcher, you might give a great deal, for few Irish genealogists whose families came ashore at the Port of New York during the mid-19th century can describe their ancestors with such accurate detail. It is for this reason that the Emigrant Savings Bank records are regarded as a goldmine. All of the above information on Ann and her family was taken from those records. An outgrowth of the Irish Emigrant Society, a benevolent institution giving aid to immigrants, the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank opened its doors in the spring of 1850. It was located at 51 Chambers Street, Manhattan, just north of City Hall. A savings bank for the working classes, its depositors were predominantly Irish. To insure protection for its patrons, the bank required identifying information of those opening accounts. What is your address? Where were you born? When did you arrive? On which ship did you sail? Who are your parents? Have you siblings? Where do they live? These are the more frequently asked questions that were copied in the bank's “Test Books.” Fifty-nine volumes from the archives of the Emigrant Savings Bank are now in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division of the New York Public Library. They include the volumes described in this article, as well as many financial records that are less likely to interest genealogists. In 1997 the NYG&B Library acquired microfilm copies of those Emigrant Savings Bank records most useful to genealogists. The 14 reels are cataloged as N.Y. L M314.72 E42 Microfilm, and are divided into three groups: Indexes; Test Books; and Transfer, Signature and Test Books. The Indexes are arranged in rough alphabetical order; entries are chronological by the first letter of the surname, and show the corresponding account number (e.g., Ann Prendergast was account #3271). There are three index books: Reel 1 Index Book 1 1850-1866 Reel 2 Index Book 2 1867-1877 Reel 3 Index Book 3 1878-1880 Once you know the account number, you can use the Test Books and then the Transfer, Signature and Test Books. If a patron lost their passbook, another would be issued, providing they could supply the clerk with the information in the Test Book. The new passbook would be recorded in the Transfer, Signature and Test Books, often with updated personal information. Because not everyone needed a new passbook, not every account in the Test Books series will also be found in the Transfer, Signature and Test Books, but researchers should always look up an account number in both series. The two series are on film as follows (unfortunately, the books indexed in Index Book 3 are missing and presumed lost): Test Books Reel Account Nos. Date Range 4 1 to 12,482 30 Sept. 1850–4 Sept. 1856 5 12,483 to 25,000 4 Sept. 1856–9 Aug. 1860 6 25,000 to 32,521 10 Aug. 1860–22 Nov. 1862 7 32,522 to 40,129 24 Nov. 1862–16 Apr. 1864 8 40,130 to 47,702 16 Apr. 1864–7 July 1865 9 47,703 to 58,999 7 July 1865–20 May 1867 10 59,000 to 66,756 20 May 1867–24 Aug. 1868 [no later Test Books survive] Transfer, Signature and Test Books Reel Vol.# Vol. # Account Nos. Date Range 11 1 28 to 69,994 3 Oct. 1850–8 Mar. 1869 12 2 70,003 to 103,999 9 Mar. 1869–3 July 1874 13 3 104,403 to 122,999 31 July 1874–12 Sept. 1877 14 6 155,001 to 170,000 6 July 1881–5 Jan. 1883 [vols. 4-5 are missing] Though the surviving records span only 18 years for the Test Books, and nine additional years for the Transfer, Signature and Test Books, they describe over 66,000 account holders. Perhaps you may be lucky and find that your ancestor was as determined as Ann Prendergast was to provide for her daughter, and that they opened a savings account as well. It'll be white-on-black and not necessarily the clearest. If you have the "Bundle" and "Record" numbers, you can make a clearer black-on-white copy yourself from a microfilm at a Family History Center. Get the microfilm number by searching their library catalog under the heading "New York, New York - Naturalization and Citizenship".

Vines of 1877 You seem to have alot of knowledge about Davis Meredith and his third wife Nancy Ann Pritchard. I had been told that my ggg-grandfather, Thomas Meredith was their son. From what I have seen there were 2 Thomas Meredith's that often get mixed up because they were born a few years apart. My Thomas Meredith was born in Virginia on December 13, 1805 and died on March 15, 1885. He married Elizabeth Powell, whose parents were Moses Powell and Rebecca Meredith(her parents were Peter Meredith and Elizabeth Broadway). Thomas and Elizabeth are on the 1830 Coshocton County, OH census where you will also find Isaac and Job Meredith. By 1840 Thomas and family settle in Fulton/Kosciusko Counties the remainder of their life along with other Merediths. The reason I question that Davis was his father was no one else that I am aware of came to OH/IN. Local Fulton County, IN genealogy histories now puts Thomas as the son of Isaac Meredith(born 1782-1853) and Elizabeth and notes that Thomas settled there along with brothers Peter and Robert. If so, then Thomas was the only one born in VA and everyone else was born in OH. I am trying to sort out these Merediths. Any help or clues would be greatly appreciated. Samuel Meredith was indeed the Brother-in-law of Patrick Henry, as well as was his other brother William Meredith. Col. Samuel Meredith was appointed colonel of the first battalion of VA minute men in 1776. Samuel Meredith, (1732-1808), served under his brother-in-law, Patrick Henry, in the Independent company, to compel Governor Dunmore to restore the gun-powder belonging to the colony. Samuel Meredith was Patrick Henry's staunch supporter. He and Patrick Henry spoke together to raise money for the militia for the Revolution. Later Elisha Meredith SR. was in his brother Samuel Meredith's Battalion during the Revolutionary War with the title of Captain. His son Elisha Meredith JR. enlisted on Feb. 3, 1779 as an ensign in Capt. John Winston's company in the battalion of which his uncle Samuel Meredith was colonel. Elisha JR was a Captain in the continental line at the Battle of Yorktown, the battle that won the Revolutionary War. Samuel Meredith was born in Hanover county, and died in Amherst county. Later in his life, when Patrick Henry was Governor of Va, Samuel Meredith was the representative for Hanover co, Va. He later settled in "Winston", Amherst, VA, in 1780. Sarah Winston Syme Henry, Samuel's MIL and mother of Patrick Henry, lived there with him and his wife Jane, and is buried there. Dear List: Last night at the monthly meeting of my DAR Chapter , we had as our program a remarkable oration by "Patrick Henry", given by an obviously talented fifth-generation Texas gentleman dressed in period costume (an optometrist in real life, and a Navy veteran). In between orating several of Henry's speeches, he gave, in the first person, some of Henry's other history -- his intermittent illnesses during this time, his strong feelings of the oppression our forefathers were under, as well as the several trips to see and talk to Washington and other of our forefathers, on which he was accompanied by his brother-in-law and supporter, Samuel Meredith. Samuel's name enters the oration one other time. Am I the only naive Meredith researcher that didn't know a Samuel Meredith was Patrick Henry's brother-in-law??? Anne ______________________________
My compiler was unable to secure any names from that marriage. Sorry. Joanne Calvert
Unfortunately, my tree lists a great deal of information which I will copy here. However, I once made a comment about the earliest Meredith in Virginia and was told that that information was incorrect, but given no corrections! So here goes: Thomas Meredith, Sr. came to Virginia in 1650 and received many land grants in Northumberland, James City and New Kent Counties. In 1683 appears a Robert Meredith whose lands were surrounded by those of Thomas Sr. and in 1680 , a James Meredith. At this point, my writer assumes that James and Robert are sons of Thomas, Sr. But in 1700, she found Samuel, Sr, George and William owning lands in St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co. Based on the fact that these lands are in one precinct, she assumes that they are brothers. Ref: Vestry meeting of St. Paul's Parish from 1705-1783. Her early information includes 1634 Land Grant to George Meredith. 1635 Julian, age 38, Walter, age 33 and Philip , age 12. 1636 Francis and Thomas Meredith, Elizabeth City Co. 1637 John Meredith James River County. 1638 Francis and Thomas Meredith (again) Upper and Lower Norfolk County. 1650. Thomas Meredith and David Meredith Northumberland County. For this see: Early Virginia Immigrants 1623-1666 by Geo C. Greer; William & Mary Quarterly, vol 5; Burgesses Revolutionary Soldiers in Virginia; St. Paul's parish Registers pp 22, 134; Douglas Register, p. 49; History of Henrico Parish (County), p. 171; Meades "Old Churches", vol I, 373 (not sure page number); vol. II, 35, 39, 58, 429, 430; Valentine Papers; Augusta County records, etc. I have no idea what or where some of these records are and if they are primary ones or not. Let me know how you make out.
I had forgotten that was true, since Meredith is not my primary line of research. According to the family tree that I have, Col. Samuel Meredith, b. 1732 and settled at "Winton", Amherst Co, VA in 1780, d. Dec. 22, 1808, married to Jane Henry, b. June 19, 1738(?) and died Aug. 12, 1819. she and her brother Patrick were the children of Col. John Henry and Sarah Winston. Samuel was the brother of Capt. Elisha Meredith, Sr. of "Snow Hill", Hanover Co, VA and their parents are Samuel Meredith, Jr and Margaret whose 2nd(?) was William Cabell Samuel and Jane Meredith had Capt. Samuel Meredith who married Elizabeth Breckenridge, Mary Meredith, Sarah Meredith who married an Armistead, Capt. William Meredith who married Sally Lewis and Jane henry Meredith who married a Garland. If a Meredith researcher has corrections or further information, please let me know. This info is from a family tree done in 1929-1934 and I am not sure of the accuracy. Joanne Calvert, ladybaltimore@comcast.net
