HUNT of 1891 http://genforum.genealogy.com/meredith/messages/551.html Hey Bud, I don't think my last message was ever posted. So we'll try again. I don't know if Frederick was b. in NC or VA. I have no clue to his father's name. But the fact that he was apparently in WVA before it was a state means he was in VA actually. Therefore, it stands to reason he may have been related more directly to the Merediths located around tidewater VA like James City Co. or Williamsburg. There the names William, Thomas, and Samuel appear. Some researchers also list a Sampson. U.S.Gen. Soloman Meredith, commander of the "Iron Brigade" at Gettysburg also seems related to the same VA Merediths. BUT since those Merediths around TW. VA seem to have been well educated and prosperous, everybody wants to trace their roots to them it seems.Actually, the Merediths we are related to may have intermarried with the Cherokees who ascended by maternal links. If so, the father's name was not so important. But here again, I have no proof...only legend or rumors through the family over the years. This much is clear. Frederick, bro. John, and prob. William settled in Wayne Co. in the 1820s. Fred, who will remain our link, was in Rutherford Co. TN in 1810. He was in Kentucky as late as July 9, 1804 based on the birth of son Thomas. He was in Knox in 1800 to marry Mary Fulton whose brother is presumed to be Thomas. It APPEARS he was in W. VA as you described. So he would have been in VA.in actuality. Reportedly he had eight (8) children with Mary Fulton. From 1802-04 in KY were born:Thomas (mine), Riley, and Frederick Jr. who must have moved to MS. (I ran into one of his descendants in Charlotte NC who lived in Indian Trail). From those eight, there must be hundreds. By traditon, Merediths moved from TN to MS, AK, TX, perhaps MO, and certainly CA over the next 100 yrs. They are coast to coast through Frederick and others too. I'd give a buck ninety-eight to connect Freddy Boy with Samuel, William, or Thomas and be done with it. Let me know if you can. 2. Subj: MEREDITH, Capt William + HENRY, Elizabeth mentioned here (located near middle of page in bold) I need some enlightenment. Posted by: Doyle Sanders Date: February 18, 2002 at 15:01:41 of 1891 http://genforum.genealogy.com/m/meredith/messages/1718.html I am descended from Joseph "Old Joe" Meredith and Nancy Skaggs, d/o of Charles Skaggs and his wife Lucinda "Lucy" Thompson, d/o of John and Mary Thompson. I am running into a lot of family lore that is going up the works and I hope someone can straighten out and send me in the right direction. I know that the Meredith's lived in a county where the county courthouse and records were burned during the Civil War. I hope some have survived in other counties and that someone has found some still extant. There is a very prominent Meredith family in eastern Virginia before and during the Revolution, and Colonel Samuel Meredith is mentioned in early Virginia Records as an officer in either the Virginia State Militia or a County militia. My family lore also states that Old Joe was born in Russell County, Virginia. This family lore further states he was the son of Capt. William Meredith and Elizabeth Henry. This family lore states she is the sister of Patrick Henry, but she is not, I do not know who her parents are. I have been assured that it is not the sister of Patrick Henry as she married to someone else. Joseph Meredith may be the son of William, I just do not know. William was said to be the son of Samuel Meredith, but again this is family lore. Again, in this dialogue Samuel was the son of either Richard or Thomas Meredith. A Capt. William Meredith fought in the engagement at King's Mountain. Katherine Keogh White published originally in 1924 mentions him in “The King’s Mountain Men.” Reference is made to him being "...born in Louisa County, his parents coming from Wales. On the Yadkin he was a neighbor to Colonel Cleveland and commanded a company under him at King's Mountain. He went into the war at the beginning. Afterward he taught school. He died on the Tugalo River." I do not see how this could be the same William who went to Kentucky. Somewhere along the line Joseph "Old Joe" Meredith is also known as Joseph Abraham Meredith. Does anyone know any more about this Kentucky line of Meredith’s? Any help would be greatly appreicated. Notify Administrator about this message? Followups: Re: I need some enlightenment. Pat Ralston 4/09/02 Re:Joseph Abraham Meredith of VA and KY Bill Vincent

    1. [MEREDITH-L] MEREDITH, Capt William + HENRY, Elizabeth mentioned here
    2. I need some enlightenment. Pat Ralston 4/09/02 Re:Joseph Abraham Meredith of VA and KY Bill Vincent 2/24/02

Re:Joseph Abraham Meredith of VA and KY Posted by: Bill Vincent Date: February 24, 2002 at 17:43:31 http://genforum.genealogy.com/m/meredith/messages/1727.html In Reply to: I need some enlightenment. by Doyle Sanders of 1891 http://genforum.genealogy.com/m/meredith/messages/1727.html Doyle, Here is my take in this subject. I don't believe that much of this information is really from oral history or long-standing tradition. Most of it is recent misinformation. I will briefly summarize what we actually know, as well as I can. A very diligent and thorough researcher, Gene Smith, did a lot of work during the 1990s, trying to find the parents of Old Joe in Virginia. Gene spent a lot of time in Virginia looking for clues. As data were found, Gene was liberal with the results of his research, passing on copies of documents and preliminary conclusions to several researchers, including Betty Peger, Mikel Meredith, myself, and others. We shared his information with others as well, always with Gene's name attached. Gene's research was all based upon Joe's father being William. At different points in time, he found information that seemed to point to Elizabeth Henry as Joe's father and subsequently to other potential parents. Every time he found a seemingly good lead, he was eventually able to disprove that possibility. He examined every William Meredith he could identify and came up empty. Perhaps there is a reason for that result. Proving a negative is difficult, but when all possibilities are eliminated, perhaps we should examine completely different alternatives. Later I was dismayed to find information that Gene disseminated, including his own prose, embedded in the published works of other people without any credit to Gene. Worse yet, people seemed to pick and choose items from his information to support their notions of the family lineage. We all want to be related to Patrick Henry, after all. There is no indication that Joe was born in Virginia, as far as I know, only that he lived there. Joe is always found close to the SKAGGS family as well. He sold land in Russell Co., VA about the time he moved to KY (ca. 1809). Joe is found living near a William Meredith in VA, and hence the idea that his father was named William. I think we should probably question that premise as well. Perhaps William was Joe's brother instead. Gene Smith has all but given up on finding the parents of Old Joe. He hasn't worked on the MEREDITH family For some time now. I think he will reluctant to pursue this trail again because he spent so many hours and found nothing but dead ends. Gene is one of the best researchers I know, and he will probably never receive the respect that he deserves because all data that he found gave negative results. I, too, welcome help from any researcher having documented evidence that might lead to finding Old Joe's parent(s). I am open to any suggestions, notwithstanding the reputed oral history. 3. I understand that there is a reference to my gggrandfather Bartholomew Meredith on the Griffiths Valuation (1848-1864). Can anybody please help with look up on this? In 1860s he would have been in Waterford (where he later died), although he is believed to have been born in Queen's County Regards Paul Meredith croftcliff@lycos.co.uk
