PETER'S CEMETERY The following is a PARTIAL list of folks buried in St. Peter's Cemetery outside of Oriole, Maryland (once known as St. Peters, MD). The original list, dated 29 Jul 1994, was provided to John Herold by Clarence Irving Laird Jr. in March 1997 and included only the names of those interred there - no dates. It was John's hope that perhaps a visitor or resident of the area could provide the missing data. Fast forward to 2001. An updated list of interrments was provided to Cindy Lawson by Patsy Laird, and Cindy in turn sent the list in to the Somerset Cemeteries Project. Cindy says, "The original list I received was dated 1/8/1997. The list contains the names of those interred there - and dates. But I have not been back down with my transcribed list to double check that all is completely correct (and probably won't until skeeter season is over as it took several months for the itching and swelling to go away after the last fight with them), but I wanted to get this information out there." The original list document was in columnar form. The number designations within the list indicate the column number, and the letter designations indicate a group within that column. Many thanks to both Cindy and John, for providing this list to the Somerset MDGenWeb Project! (He then locates the "Whitman Place," where Samuel Whitman probably settled, and where Weston Nutter later erected buildings. It was always called the "Whitman" place. The house stood where the barn in now: the main part contained but two rooms, but a shed part ran the whole length, in which one room was finished. But the east end was open and the well was in it, in one corner, with a hole in the roof where the pole for drawing wter ran up through. Ministers later lived in the house at various periods. Eben also remembered a John and a Daniel Whitman, but they did not live in Bloomfield. John lived on the Pooler hill directly east from Haskell's corner. He lost his children in a tragic fire while he and his wife were at church. No more details are given, though I suppose deeds could be found at the Skowhegan Registry of Deeds which might give further information. Kathleen

WARREN AIR BASE CEMETERY, Cheyenne, Laramie Co., WYContributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives September 24, 2001 by JerryAshley < jleeash@uswestmail.net > =========================================================================This cemetery is located on Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Laramie County, Wyoming. It was established on September 20, 1867 (as part of the then Fort D. A. Russell) by General John D. Stevenson the first post commander. The cemetery is now closed for burials except for relatives that have spaces reserved near their kin. A plaque at the cemetery entrance briefly describes its history:BASE CEMETERYThe cemetery was begun in 1867 when the base was established. It contains the graves of the military who died here or during the Indian Wars from 1867 to 1890. Civilians attached to the post as employees or dependents are also buried here. The first grave is that of Private John W. Saunders who was buried after his death on December 3, 1867. The first civilian buried was John E. Woodruff, buried in December 1868. The cemetery contain the graves of "Buffalo Soldiers", black troops who served in the West after the Civil War, and many children who died from the epidemics that were common during the late 1880's and early 1900's. In a separate section of the cemetery are the graves of nine German and one Italian soldier who died here while prisoners-of-war during World War II. While most graves have the standard government supplied headstones, many graves have individual headstones purchased by friends or family. An explanation for the term "Laundress" is appropriate since it often appears in the history of Fort D. A. Russell and its cemetery records. The Francis E. Warren Air Force Base Cemetery Guide (FEWP 210-1, 1 May 1985) provides an insight to these individials:THE LAUNDRESSESThey had more official status in the western army than the wives. Laundresses and camp followers were covered by regulations; the wives not at all. A congressional act of March 16, 1802, allowed laundresses to accompany the troops in a ration of four for every 100 men...officers were charged five dollars and enlisted men two dollars per month for laundry services. Throughout their existence, the residents of "Sudsville" were controversial figures. Most were the wives of enlisted men before or shortly after their appearance on post. Some commanders swore at them and some swore by them. The problems presented by them were largely of a moral and morale nature as could be expected in a situation where the men outnumbered the women by such a large percentage. Fort Russell quartered its laundresses and their families in a typical "Soapsuds Row" on the banks of Crow Creek...Some of these hardy ladies are buried in our cemetery...In 1878 the Adjutant General's office issued General Order Number 37, which rang the death knell for this controversial group. Laundresses were allowed to serve until the end of their husband's enlistment, at the discretion of the commander; then all funds were cut off. A tradition which we had inherited from The British was coming to an end.During August 2001, the entire cemetery was digitally photographed in section, row, and grave sequence by CMSgt Jerome Ashley, USAF(Ret). These images were subsequently compared to the cemetery records found at the F. E. Warren ICBM/Heritage Museum and the base library. The information in the records often differed with the engraving on the grave markers. Data on the headstones was used as the primary entry in these files. Separate entries are cross-referenced to the primary record when the names or other information varied. Notes are also provided where headstones contain additional information not in the basic file. For years everyone was looking for Alexander Frazier/Fashure/Mary "Polly" MEREDITH ,m. 1808, Henry CO, VA. It appears that Alexander's real name was James Alexander Frazier, s/o James Phasar/Phasure and Margaret Walker. Born in Ireland. Recently I found a marriage bond issued to James Frazier/Margaret Walker in 1779 in Rockingham CO., VA. It appears that they returned to Ireland were one child, James Alexander Frazier was born in 1781, and possible more children were born in Ireland. Sometime between 1782-1807 they returned from Ireland with their children. By 1808, James Alexander married Marry "Polly" Meredith in Henry CO., VA and had the following children: George Washington Frazier b. 1808; m. Sarah "Sallie" Dillon Creed T Frazier b. 1810; m. 1. [MEREDITH-L] MEREDITH, Burgess "One of our most accomplished actors" (MORE)
    2. Subj: MEREDITH, Burgess "One of our most accomplished actors" http://www.lkwdpl.org/lore/lore31.htm Meredith's Lakewood memories are mostly unhappy > Former Lakewoodite Burgess Meredith, who many feel is one of the most accomplished actors of the past century, has had a full life and is still living it *-- but now in Malibu, Calif. He turned 88 on Nov. 16. Because Meredith spent merely a few years in Lakewood, and those only as a child, his memories of our city are sparse. Furthermore, he confesses to their being "vaguely sad." During his brief stay here, he attended third- and fourth-grade classes (1916-18) at Madison Elementary School, 16601 Madison Ave., and lived at nearby 1545 Westwood Ave. "We recently drove to his one-time home -- a single, two-story frame residence of turn-of-the-century vintage -- and talked to present owner and sole occupant Ralph E. Barendt. "When I came in 1974, I heard that Burgess Meredith once lived here," said Barendt, a 71-year-old retiree and widower. Beyond that, he knows of nothing that would connect the Meredith family to the site. "Of course, there were the Marshalls who lived here before me, but they are dead," he said as an afterthought. Our actor subject came to Lakewood from Cleveland's East Side where he was born the youngest of three children to physician father William George Meredith and mother Ida Beth (nee Burgess) Meredith. Dr. Meredith, a native of Toronto, was of Welsh extraction. Ida was born in Fitchville, Ohio, in Huron County. Her family was originally from North Ireland. The main reason for Meredith's sad memories of Lakewood, as explained in an autobiography published last year, were his parents' marital quarrels at the time. He said his father was frustrated and drank heavily, and his mother was in constant despair. "All my life, to this day, the memory of my childhood remains grim and incoherent," he wrote. "If I close my eyes and think back, I see little except violence and fear." Meredith remembers taking part in a few plays as a grade schooler here. However, it was his choir-singing soprano voice as a child in Lakewood that hinted of a performing future. In Lakewood he was pushed, more or less, into singing, in spite of early asthma problems that kept him from school much of the time. When a nationwide audition, held by the Paulist Choristers Boy Choir of New York, came to town, Meredith participated and was one of the winners. He was sent to New York City but never did join the Catholic choir there. Instead, shortly before that was to happen, his maternal grandfather, retired Rev. Oliver Burgess, intervened. The Rev. Burgess, who was credited with being one of the founders of the first Methodist church in Cleveland, suggested that before affiliating with the Catholic group, his grandson try out for a Protestant group while in New York. So, through the help of Meredith's sister Virginia, new arrangements were made for an audition at the Protestant Cathedral of St. John the Divine. In this, too, the young singer succeeded. Thus, as a sub-teen, Meredith joined the St. John Choir in NYC, with the church providing schooling, board and lodging. At this point, Meredith's Lakewood connection ended. While he was supposed to return home during vacation times, there was really no place for him to return. He recalled that his father had retreated to Canada and his mother was living as best as she could, sometimes with an aunt, sometimes with friends. In the early 1920s, when Meredith was no longer a plausible soprano, he enrolled in the Hoosac Preparatory School at Hoosick Falls, N.Y., after which he entered Amherst College. But despite a college scholarship, lack of money soon became a problem. He quit school and got a job as a reporter on the Stamford Advocate in Connecticut. When that didn't work out, he teamed up with his brother George in operating a haberdashery at Fairmount Boulevard and Cedar Road in Cleveland Heights. It wasn't long before their business flopped and Burgess returned to Amherst; however, not before doing a temporary stint of about two weeks of cub reporting for Cleveland's The Plain Dealer. Subsequently, disillusioned as a student, he left Amherst a second time, Nevertheless, nearly a decade later, after his success as an actor, the college bestowed upon him an honorary masters degree in art. In the late 1920s, Meredith drifted back to New York, where he had various fill-in jobs, among them selling vacuum cleaners, clerking at Macy's, and working as a runner on Wall Street. Also, he made two trips to South America as an ordinary seaman on an ocean liner, after which he was fired by the ship's captain for disobeying orders. "I was no good at anything except the stage," Meredith once told a reporter. His springboard to Broadway was when he was admitted in 1929 to Eva Le Gallien's Civic Repertory Co. in NYC as an apprentice without pay. He scored his first big impression in the early 1930s when he received the role of Red Barry in Little Ol' Boy, the Albert Bein play of reform school life. His first theatrical appearance in Cleveland was a three-day engagement at the Hanna Theater in 1936 as the male lead in Maxwell Anderson's Winterset. Meredith served during World War II and attained a captaincy in the Air Force. He was wed four times. His first wife was attractive Helen Derby, whose father was president of American Cyanamide. That marriage lasted from 1933-35. >Photo source: Life Magazine 1943 In 1936, he tied the nuptial knot with actress Margaret Perry. They were divorced in 1938. His third wife was screen star Paulette Goddard, from 1944-48. Before Meredith, she was the spouse of comedian Charlie Chaplin. In 1950, Meredith married his present wife, the lovely former Swedish ballerina Kaja Sundsten, who is considerably his junior. They have two children -- son Jonathon, a musician, and daughter Tala, a painter. Meredith has chalked up scores of impressive roles on stage, screen, TV and radio. He also has a host of citations for his standout accomplishments as a director through the years. He is noted for his enthusiastic, eccentric portrayals that have spanned decades. In 1939, he starred in the movie Of Mice and Men, taken from John Steinbeck's famous novel. In 1944, he appeared as Ernie Pyle in The Story of G.I. Joe, which General Dwight D. Eisenhower called "the best war film I have ever seen." In 1966, Meredith played The Penguin in the motion picture Batman. Starting in 1976, he was Sylvester Stallone's fight manager in the Rocky film series. More recently he has co-starred with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau in the movie Grumpy Old Men and its sequel, Grumpier Old Men. 3. Does anyone have any MEREDITH family in Queen's County, Ireland in the 1800s? Some first names were Thomas, William, Rice, Philip, Jeremiah, John, Charles, and Samuel. Thomas had nine children by three wives ... trying to find wives' names! Many Merediths from Queen's County emigrate to Ontario, Canada in the 1840-1850s. Cheers from Linda
