Each entry lists the surname, forename, title, occupation and place of residence (where these are given) of the person whose will, testament or inventory was recorded. Currently, it also gives the court in which the document was recorded. When the image becomes available, links to 'more information' and the option to 'add to cart' will be added, usually showing the type of document available and its precise reference. SURNAMES & FORENAMES FIELDS We cannot guarantee that every surname or forename is spelt correctly. Similarly, we cannot guarantee that all information about the occupation and place of residence of the deceased person is given in the index. If you do not find a specific surname in our index (which does use Soundex to retrieve results when you uncheck the 'exact match' option) then try variations on that surname if they exist. Go to the 'Research Tools' section of our website to find variations on specific surnames and forenames. DESCRIPTION FIELD The description field currently contains several different categories of information, i.e. title, status, occupation and place of residence. This reflects the layout of the printed indexes to the wills up to 1800. You can search on any one of these categories at a time in addition to names and dates. This field also often contains the name of the spouse of the deceased ('relict' in the case of widows). This is because we are currently unable to extract this information in order to add it to the main index. Therefore, if you cannot find the name you are looking for in the 'surname' field try a search for it in the 'description' field. COURT/COMMISSARIOT FIELD The original index to Scottish Wills & Testaments often did not include parish or county information so we have been unable to include this information in many cases, or to enable a search by parish or county. Where the parish name appeared in the original index, you should find it by searching in the 'DESCRIPTION' field. We have retained the original record divisions of Scottish Commissary and Sheriff Courts. You can select one of these to search in our 'Court/Commissariot' Field. To find out more about the areas of Scotland that these courts covered, go to 'Research Tools' and then 'Places in Scotland'. THE DOCUMENTS This index is not just to Scottish Wills but also to Testaments and Inventories as well. This means that the search results produced incorporate a variety of different documents. We cannot guarantee the quality or quantity of information included in these documents. As the information in the index is edited, we will add in the different document types for easy identification (from the 'More Info' link and under ' Additional Information'). Index entries do not include names of executors, trustees or heirs to the estate. For more information on the different types of documents in this index, have a look at our extensive 'Help' section which is linked from every page in the site. DATE 'FROM' and 'TO' FIELDS The dates given in the index are for the recording of the document in the court register. The date of death and the date of the will (if one was made) occur in the text of the document. Usually, the date of recording is fairly soon after the date of death, but occasionally it can be several months or even years later. MULTIPLE ENTRIES Some people in the index have more than one entry. There are various reasons for this: in some Sheriff Courts separate registers were kept for inventories and wills; sometimes an additional inventory was recorded later in the same or a subsequent register; in the Commissary Court registers an 'eik' or additional document was sometimes recorded. For more information on the different types of documents in this index, have a look at our extensive 'Help' section for further information. SEARCH RESULTS Where your results include the phrase 'Add to Cart' this means that these images are currently available for purchase. Where this phrase does not appear next to your results, it means that these images are not available yet. Please 'Register with Us' to be kept informed of new additions to the website. ERRORS IN THE INDEX If you find an error in any index entry please let us know via e-mail at indexerrors@scan.org.uk and we will endeavour to correct it as soon as possible. SEARCH TIPS AND HELP You can find extensive help and tips on searching our index by following the link to 'Help' which appears on every page of the site. Have you checked out the military records. The information from your friend in England said that William was in the War of 1812 and was drafted from St. Clairsville, Ohio and it was from that service that he got land in WV where he lived at the time of his death. I also found where the Meredith side was traced back to Delaware on one of the websites, but I don't know if it has been checked to see if it is really correct. Re: Meredith/Anguish : Ron Merideth -- 18 May 2002 Re: Meredith/Anguish Author: Ron Merideth > Date: 18 May 2002 6:40 PM GMT Classification: Query In Reply to: Meredith/Anguish by: Kay L. 1. [MEREDITH-L] Simon m. Sarah Worthington PA 1800s
    2. Hi Listers, I'm new to this list, having only just begun my research into my Meredith branch. My great-great grandmother was Margaret MEREDITH, b. 1832 PA and d. 1883 PA. She married Andrew J. YERKES in 1856. Margaret's parents were Simon MEREDITH (b. circa 1811 PA) and Sarah WORTHINGTON (b. circa 1809 PA). I'm "assuming" Simon descends from the MEREDITHs who came over from Wales in the late 1600s and who helped establish Germantown, PA. Can anyone point me in a helpful direction to find Simon's ancestors? Many thanks and best regards, India van Voorhees Penney

DAVIS: Birth: Census records of Halfmoon Town for 1800 show him to be 16-26 probably are in error since in 1820 he is over 45. I believe he turned 45 between 1810 and 1820 making his probable birth year 1765-1775. He was, according to the reference below, a Revolutionary war soldier so 1765 is probably closer to correct. DEATH:If the birth scenerio above is correct his death date would be about 1858. However, I have not found him in the 1850 census. OTHER: He was a native of NY, Lived to age 93 and died in NY. "History of. Polk, Cedar, Dade, and Barton Co. Missouri, 1889" He was an active member of the Clifton Park Baptist church in Halfmoon, Saratoga Co, N.Y. from 1798 until he requested termination of his membership in 1832 possibly transferring to the Burnt Hills Baptist Church at Balston, Saratoga Co. 3. I have a photo of Will Meredith. I am assuming that it was taken in Iowa, either Knoxville or Grinnell. If taken in Grinnell, it would be because he was a student at Grinnell College (1901-1906) I would like to return it to a descendant. Time frame would be 1885-1910. He is about 20 years old in this picture. Leslie

The original cemetery occupied Sections 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, and 12. Many removals from farm and roadside burial grounds were made according to the records. These began in the early 1860's.The grounds have three buildings. The first, built in 1867, was a hold vault for burials to be made later for a variety of reasons. The second, a small chapel, erected in 1913, was used upon request for funeral services and for some time by a small church group. It is called a Memorial Chapel, erected by Lindie M. Groh-Johnson, born August 24, 1852 and died August 11, 1930. Andrew Groh, born July 24, 1836 and died August 24, 1912, was her father. Added later was a shed for equipment and tools, a restroom, and an office for the custodian. The cemetery is located on a knoll, planted many years ago with pines, now towering homes for birds of all kinds, creating a most pleasant setting. The following listing has been copied from the listing in the Stalker The reason for the text being in slightly different format than it was in the Stalker, is so the computer could alphabetize by surname and include all information pertaining to that name, including the row and section. For that reason, entries such as "his wife" had to be entered "wife of ___." I have also chosen to omit most of the periods and commas that should be included in text, but are really not important in lists such as these. Much seems to have stemmed from The History of Ritchie County, West Virginia, 1910, Minnie Kendall Lowther, page 352 which incorrectly reads, in part: “Davis Meredith was born in Wales, near the middle of the eighteenth century, and being a Sabbatarian, and being persecuted for his religious belief, he came to America in his young manhood, shortly before the Revolution, and settled in Connecticut……….” Davis Meredith was born in Kent County, Delaware, the oldest son of Job and Rebecca (Davis) Meredith about 1757. In a 7 April 1786 deed, Kent Co. Book Y page 216-217 Job and his wife Lydia together with his children by Rebecca Davis sold 2/3 of "Maiden's Lott" 1/3 of which was purchased from Michael Greenley in 1761 (Book Q, page 74) and the second 1/3 was obtained by Job Meredith senior intermarrying with Rebecca Davis, one of the representatives of John Davis for whom the whole plot was surveyed 22 June 1747. On the deed were Davis and his wife Amelia; Peter and wife Elizabeth; Job Junior; Rachel and her husband John Keys (all of Kent Co., DE). Since Obediah was not of age in 1786, he later conveyed his share by a Monongalia Co., VA. Deed recorded Kent Co. Book E-2 page 264. Will of John Davis 9 Jan 1747 heirs: wife Mary; Son John; daughters Rachel, Rebekah, Mary, Sarah; witnesses: Joshua Meredith, John Hatfield and Thomas Smith. The second wife of Davis, was named Elizabeth. She was named in a Monongalia County, Virginia, deed OS 1:321- 322, in 1798 when they sold their land on Stacks Run to James Smallwood Wilson. Elizabeth had died by 9 November 1800 when Davis and his third wife, Ann Nancy Prichard, were married by Rev. William Shaw in Allegany County, Maryland. Ann’s parents, Thomas and Rachel (Davis) Prichard, were then living in Allegany County. In 1807, Lydia (Whitaker) Meredith, second wife of Davis’ father, died in Kent Co. DE. According to the Orphan’s Court proceeding after Job Meredith’s death in 1793, Davis Meredith as the oldest son had the right to accept the land (which had been Lydia’s Dower Right) upon the death of Lydia. However, Davis and his wife Ann conveyed it to his younger brother Job Meredith who had remained in Kent Co. This Kent County, Delaware Deed of 11 April 1808 (Book K-2:252) states: “Davis Meredith of Monongalia County State of Virginia and his wife Ann”. This proves that the Davis with wife Amelia in 1786 and the Davis with wife Ann of Monongalia County in 1808 was the son of Job Meredith and Rebecca Davis of Murderkill Hundred, Kent County, DE. Children of Davis Meredith: Amelia (surname unknown) undoubtedly was the mother of Absalom Meredith and Hannah Meredith, the two oldest children (b. c1783-1785). Not knowing when Amelia died and when Davis married his second wife, Elizabeth (surname unknown) (who was on a 1798 deed OS1:321-322) in Monongalia Co.(W)VA)) it is not known if the next two children, Rebecca and New Meredith, were by Amelia or Elizabeth. However, she was not Elizabeth Howell as stated by some. The Elizabeth Howell of Loudoun Co. d/o Timothy Howell married a Benjamin Meredith not Davis Meredith (Loudoun Co. Deed 20:31). Davis was married to his third wife Ann Nancy Prichard on 9 Nov 1800 in Allegany Co. MD by Rev. Wm. Shaw and they had seven children: Rachel, Martha, Thomas, Elenor, Job, Davis and William Meredith. Davis named these eleven children in his Monongalia Co. VA will probated in 1825. The will available for viewing at the court house (Morgantown, WV) is a typed version because old wills are delicate and not subject to handling. This is mentioned because the son named New is typed as Nell. Nell or Nelly was a nickname for his daughter Eleanor, but she is listed as Elenor. JOB MEREDITH (Father of Davis Meredith): Job Meredith first appears on Kent Co. tax rolls in 1751. If age 21 then he born about 1730 or earlier. Job’s father Robert Meredith appeared on the first Kent Co. DE tax list of 1726 until his death in 1767 so it is presumed that Job was born in Mutherkill/Murderkill Hundred of Kent Co., DE. Probate records of Kent County 17 Oct 1793, show Letter of Administration to Lydia Meredith, widow of Job Meredith dec'd. Two documents prove the maiden name and father of Lydia Whitaker, second wife of Job Meredith: (a) Will of Henry Whitaker probated 25 Sep 1794 names daughter Lydia Meredith. (b) Kent Co. Deed 29 Aug 1792 Book C-2 page 369: Job and Lydia Meredith received land inherited by Lydia from William Whitaker. William had sold land to Isaac Whitaker but died before the deed was finalized. The land was divided between nine collateral relatives including Lydia Meredith wife of Job Meredith. Shortly before Job’s death in 1793, he received land from Thomas Moor son of Joseph Moor deceased (this was land that had been sold by Joseph Moore to Robert Meredith in 1747, but Moore and Robert Meredith had both died before a deed was executed, thus Moore’s son conveyed the tract of about 50 acres adjoining John Oldfield and William White to Job Meredith son of Robert (Land Book C-2:69). Lydia died in 1807 per Orphan's Court L.F.F 276, 14 Aug 1807, and Job Meredith son of Job Meredith dec'd, petitioned the court and lists the children of Job dec'd: Davis, Peter, Rachel then wife of John Keys since deceased, Job your petitioner, Obed, [the first five by Rebecca] [the last seven children by Lydia] Elizabeth wife of Absalom Cooper, Henry, Steven, James, David, Abner and Benjamin of whom the said James and Henry have since died under age, intestate and without issue. Widow was awarded 1/3 and is now deceased. Davis and Peter relinquuished their share. [Davis and Peter were living in western Virginia.] By 1808 Job was to pay the other heirs not later than 5 May 1809 for their share. ROBERT MEREDITH (Grandfather of Davis Meredith): Job was executor of his father’s estate (Robert Meredith’s will made 1 April 1767, probated 7 October 1767, wife Rachel; son Job executor; witnesses John Caton, Joseph Moor and Wheelor Meredith. Settlement account showed payment to Joshua Meredith and to the estate of Wheelor Meredith.) Job presented accounting of Robert’s estate (Orphan’s Court, Book B:65) and requested permission to sell Robert’s land to pay debts (Orphan’s Court, Book B:68, Kent County, DE, 1768). Job Meredith as executor sold his father’s land, Rachel ‘s Delight, on 14 February 1769 (Land Record Book S:112); and repurchased the land the following day, 15 February (Land Book S:113). I will type this in my data base and then forward it on to the list. Now for Job Meredith. I found 1 "Job" listed on the 1790 Maryland census. He was in Queen Annes county, township unknown, there a 2 white males ages 16 and up including head of household, there is 1 free white male under 16, 1 free white female, no slaves. Hope this is of some help to you. Barb in GA

    3. Good Morning All, I'm looking for anyone connected to a William Meredith who gave power of attorney to E.M. Brank in Hopkins County Kentucky in 1819. I'm trying to determine if William is related to our Samuel F Meredith who was in Hopkins County at the same time. If you are related to any Merediths in Hopkins and Trigg Counties in Kentucky during this time frame please post them to the list. Who knows...we may be cousins! Thanks, Barb in GA
