" In Virginia, this was not the case at that time. Any female who was head of household was indeed responsible for paying the tax on all male or eligible slave polls in her household (as she was for land/property taxes). However, she, herself, was not counted as a one of those "polled" or tithed on personal tax lists I don't think it made any difference whether she was a single widow, or just a single head of household (aunt, teacher with boarders, etc.). Was it different in Maryland? Were women themselves actually included in the count for poll taxes? Unless the names of the taxable tithes in a household are actually listed by name, it was sometimes misinterpreted in VA by researchers -- ie, she had a son over 16, or a laborer/overseer, etc. Thanks so much, Janet Hunter ______________________________ X-Message: #2 Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2004 22:22:32 -0500 From: "John Polk" <jfpolk@earthlink.net> To: LOWER-DELMARVA-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <41200414223223272@earthlink.net> Subject: Re: [LDR] Tax Assessment Records (Women heads of household) Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Janet - When I wrote my note yesterday I thought that the female heads of households were actually counted as taxables, but your question caused me to go back and take a closer look to be sure, and I now see that this is not the case. I don't want to generalize too much since the only taxlists I have actually worked with are the tax lists of Somerset County MD, but looking at some specific cases in these, I can see that female heads of household do not add to the count. The taxlists of Somerset are mostly extant starting from the year 1723and continuing through the colonial era, with a few missing years or hundreds. I have been very fortunate to see the original documents which are kept at the Maryland Archives. For those of you who are not so lucky, I highly recommend the "Taxlists of Somerset County, 1730-40" if you can find a copy - currently out of print. Jean Elliott Russo compiled her book in a way that preserves the integrity of the original documents, that is she keeps the names in exactly the order they appeared in the original lists as compiled by the Constables of the various hundreds. This is crucial since it gives a good indication of who lived next to who, and as you follow the changes from one year to the next you can get a real feel for the development of the community. It can also provide the essential discriminant in separating individuals with the same name from one another. Just the index to this book, by itself, provides a tremendous amount of insight to the fortunes of individual families as the members appear and leave from year to year. If you happen to have had ancestors that lived in Somerset back in this era this can be a real genealogical godsend. Searching for information on Hannah Meredith. She was from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she married a Harry Gordon in 1755. She had children there and also had them in Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware, USA. There are several marriages for this couple. Harry Gordon and Hannah Meredith were married privately in 1755 by the Chaplain of a British Regiment in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I have located two other weddings for the couple. On 30 January 1762, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA there was a public wedding. Another occurred on 4 May 1763 at the old Trinity or old Swedes church in Wilmington, Newcastle, Delaware, USA. I noticed references to a Robert and Job Meredith, among others in Delaware in the information in rootsweb. Do you have anything that may connect my Hannah Meredith into your research? Please...the word is Welsh. Welch means to go back on a bet. To answer your question...probably not. That doesn't mean your person wasn't born in Wales, but that name is definitely not typical. Names like Evans, Bevans, Hughes, Pugh, Griffith, Lewis, William, David, Thomas, Roland, Roberts, Rogers, Cadawaldr, Rees, Price, Johns, Jones, etc. are Welsh....and many more. Think of it this way....the Welsh used given names as surnames and as the terms "map" and "mab" (meaning "son of") were used, often the first two letters of each of those were dropped. For example: Evan ap Evan would be Evan Bevan (IF the man chose to use that for a surname...and it was a matter of choice.) Rees often became Rice or Price. The following site has several links that could help you learn more about the Welsh and their naming system: http://www.gwynedd.fsbusiness.co.uk/journal2.htm http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/welsh16.html Good luck to you, E ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bryan Keech" <bryankeech@cox.net> To: <PA-WELSH-EARLY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 11, 2004 5:12 PM Subject: [PA-WELSH-EARLY] Is Keech welch? > My family name is Keech. In other words your name has to be Meridith if you are trying to trace the Merideth line using DNA. If there is a female in your direct line to Meridiths it breaks the chain. Your gggrandmother was Helena Merideth & gggrandfather was Frank Edwards, Females do not receive the Y dna from their father so Helena did not receive Nutter's y DNA and can not pass it down the line. The Y dna that was passed to the children of Frank & Helena was Edwards. His dna would be passed to all male descendants but not to females. In short the only DNA which is passed unchanged from generation to generation is the Y DNA & it is only present in the males. Your Y Dna is the same as your father, grandfather, ggrandfather, gggrandfather etc. Y DNA is tested and results are compared with others to determine if you have a common male ancestor. Jack & I tested to try & determine if Taylor Merideth connected to Jack's line of Merediths which so far traces to Obediah Meredith, Job Meredith, Robert Meredith jr. & Robert Meredith sr. It seems there is no connection since there are three of 12 markers different between the two of us. If you know any male researchers named Meredith they would be a candidate to be tested. Female researchers who have a living brother, father, grandfather, uncle, male cousin, etc named Meredith could get one of them tested. If anyone matched my DNA it would only mean there is a common ancestor somewhere back in history or even prehistory. Hope that's not too confusing. Ron

Georgia I've been told that Meredith & Maready (my surname) was originally spelled Meredydd from Wales, but was pronounced Meredith. I've also seen quite a few variations of spellings. Hope this will help you. Good Luck Dunita
Hello, I'm new to the mailing list. I have been tracing my father's side of my family for some time, but since I'v gotten to Richard MEREDITH b. 1800-1820? Llanfair Caereinion, I've hit a wall. I know he married Sarah Jones 25 Dec 1837 in Shrewsbury, Salop, England. His father is listed as Thomas Meredith, Weaver. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. Georgia Kovalik (nee Meredith)
Frances, Mahala, Martha and William - this is my family! Does anyone have any more info on them? James b. 1790-1800 was William's father. I have more info but there are some BIG holes in our research going back from James. Good morning Moor@usa.net, In reviewing archives found your detailed message about COOPER family genealogy list. I found the reference to Ezekiel COOPER and his mother Ann BROADWAY-COOPER. Also mentioned Cooper, Ezekiel Letter to Sarah Meridith 1848- I am sending this short message to determine if you are still interested in genealogy. Thank you for this valuable information. http://www.familytreebookshop.com/cat-dela.htm A Note to Eastern Shore Researchers Migration patterns during the 16th and early 17th centuries led many planters to leave the Eastern Shore of Virginia and settle in the Lower Shore counties of Maryland--Worcester and Somerset-- as well as Sussex and Kent counties in Delaware (which was part of Pennsylvania--referred to as the Three Lower Counties). Research may be complicated a bit because of the border dispute between the Calverts and Penns which was not settled until 1763 with the Mason-Dixon line. <A HREF="http://www.familytreebookshop.com/#How To Order">How To Order </A> Abstracts of the Proceedings of the Orphan's Court of Sussex County, Delaware: Libers, 1, 2, 3, 4--1708-09 &1728-1777 V.L.
