    1. [MEREDITH-L] Reunion story from bitsofblueand gray Civil War etc site (great place to seek)
    2. http://www.bitsofblueandgray.com/january2004.htm JANUARY 2004 Reunion by James L. Walker Note: from Jayne.. The following was a story told in the American Civil War History chat room in the now defunct Golden Gate Genealogy Forum. I'm leaving his introduction to the story as he said it to the room members. And now on with Jim's story. It has been to my amazement, how many stories there are during the Civil War that relate fathers finding sons, sons finding fathers, brothers finding brothers and all manner of relatives running across one another during the events of the Civil War. During the battle of Gettysburg, a Union colonel captured his Confederate nephew. Of all these however, the one documented by Frank Moore in his “Anecdotes, Poetry, and Incidents of the War” (New York, 1866), is one of the strangest. Nine or ten years ago, a citizen of one of the towns in the eastern part of Massachusetts was unjustly suspected of a crime which the statute cannot easily reach, but which deservedly brings upon him the guilty of it the indignation of upright men. There were circumstances which gave color to the suspicion, and the unfortunate gentleman suffered the misery of loss of friends, business and reputation. His sensitive nature could not face these trials, and he fell into a condition of body and mind which alarmed his family. At length, having invested his property where it could be easily managed by his wife, he suddenly disappeared, leaving her a comfortable home and the care of two boys, ten and twelve years old. The first fear that he had sought a violent death was partly dispelled by the orderly arrangement of his affairs, and the discovery that a daguerreotype of the family group was missing from the parlor table. Not much effort was made to trace the fugitive. When, afterwards, facts were developed which established his innocence of the crime charged, it was found impossible to communicate with him; and as the publication of the story in the columns of several widely-circulated journals failed to re-call him, he was generally supposed to be dead. At the outbreak of the present civil war, his eldest son, now a young man, was induced by a friend, a captain in a Western regiment, to enlist in his company. He carried himself well through campaigns into Missouri and Tennessee, and after the capture of Fort Donnelson was rewar4ded with a First Lieutenant’s commission. At the battles of Murfreesboro’ he was wounded in the left arm, but so slightly that he was still able to take charge of a squad of wounded prisoners. While performing this duty, he became aware that one of them, a middle-aged man, with a full, heavy beard was looking at him with fixed attention. The day after the fight, as the officer was passing, the soldier gave the military salute and said: “A word with you, if you please, sir. You remind me of an old friend. Are you from New England?” “I am.” “From Massachusetts?” “Yes.” “And your name?” The young lieutenant told his name, and why he came to serve in a Western regiment. “I thought so,” said the other, and turning away, he was silent. Although his curiosity was much excited by the soldier’s manner, the officer forbore to question him, and withdrew. But in the afternoon he took occasion to renew the conversation, and expressed the interest awakened in him by the incident of the morning. “I knew your father,” said the prisoner. “Is he well?” “We have not seen him for several years. We think he is dead.” Then followed such an explanation of circumstances of his disappearance as the young man could give. He had never known the precise nature of the charges against his father, but was able to make it quite clear that his innocence had been established. “I knew your mother, also,” continued the soldier. “I was in love with her when she married your father.” “I have a letter dated from her, dated ten days ago. My brother is a nine months’ man at New Orleans.” After a desultory conversation the soldier took from under his coat a leather wallet and disclosed a daguerreotype case. “Will you oblige me,” he said, “by looking at this alone in your tent?” Agitated almost beyond control, the young officer took the case and hurried away. He had seen the picture before! It represented a man and a woman, sitting side by side, with a boy at the knee of each. The romantic story moved the commander of the division to grant the youth a furlough; and both father and son reached home soon after. Return to the Main Page

    2. Pat/Chas
    3. Will try again to connect with someone who might have some definitive information on the parents of Rice MEREDITH who lived in Albemarle and Amherst counties of Virginia in the late 1700s. He died before October 1779. He was married to Margaret UNKNOWN and had at least one child - a daughter Ester who married Leonard BALLOU. I descend from Ester and Leonard. A pure guess is that Rice was the son of lawyer James MEREDITH, but no clue whatsoever. Thanks for any help. Charlie Weaver, Winston-Salem, NC

    1. [MEREDITH-L] Samuel Merediths and Reese/Rice Merediths (Quaker family and VA family...connedtion??)
    2. L. Hurston Anderson, PhD
    3. Thanks Bluchp56@aol.com for this link. "Click here: University of Delaware: SAMUEL MEREDITH PAPERS http://www.lib.udel.edu/ud/spec/findaids/meredith.htm" I have always been fascinated with this Meredith Quaker family in PA because they seemed so involved with the early days of the United States. Maybe they would not be on the list of the top ten most influential Founding Fathers, but they would be in there pretty high. The renowned 1st Treasurer of the U.S. Samuel Meredith's father, Reese Meredith, was a very successful merchant and trader who actually invested in some slave trading trips at about the time that Quakers were becoming overtly anti-slavery. This seems to have caused him some difficulty with the church, but I do not believe that he broke completely. Merediths seemed to hae been involved with the major issues of the first centrury of the country. Almost certainly, Reese Meredith was a close acquaintance of Benjamin Franklin and most of the other Philadelphia founders. My interest was peaked because of a similarity of names to the contemporary Merediths of VA who were also rather prominent. Reese/Rhys/Rice/Reece are all the same name I think, and my interest has been a Rice Meredith from the Old Albemarle/Amherst co areas of VA between 1745-1776. Just from my personal study, and completely unscientifically, I think that most of the Welsh who came to the colonies in the late 1600's early 1700's were Quakers, and the Merediths of Philadelphia fit that mold rather well. However, the VA Merediths seem to descend from a George Meredith from Liberty Hall, New Kent Co, VA where Samuel I was born 1698. He died Sep 30 1762 probably in Old Albemarle Co, VA. His son seems to be the Col. Samuel Meredith who purchased "Winton" in New Glasgow/Clifford, VA from Cabell. Of course, he married Governer (etc.) Patrick Henry's ("Give me Liberty or give me death.") sister Jane Henry, and their mother Sarah Winston Henry died at "Winton" ultimately. Given conditions of the times where freedom of religion did not really exist in most of the colonies, these Merediths were almost surely Episcopalians. Whether these Meredith families were related or not, I do not know, but they were both quite active in the early days of this country. Certainly, Samuel Meredith, the financier, from PA was known to Virginian Geo. Washington who appointed (or promoted his appointment) him 1st Treasurer. The presence in the same area of Virginia as Samuel Meredith the owner of "Winton" of Rice Meredith (my particular interest and distant ancestor) suggests some similarity of names, but Samuel and Rice/Reese may have been really common, I suppose. There may have been no relaltionship whatsoever. Does anyone have knowledge of these families who might contribute information which could help? 1. [MEREDITH-L] Samuel Meredith, Jr. (Col. and brother in law of Patrick Henry)
    2. L. Hurston Anderson, PhD
    3. Samuel Meredith who purchased the estate "Winton" in Clifford (New Glasgow), VA from Cabell (forget which one) was listed in a list of Old Albemarle/Old Amherst as one of 7 Merediths of the era 1740-1776 (?). The list is below as written by Alexander Brown. Meredith James attny 1747 au Mr. _______ a. Mr. _______ a. Rice a. 1745 Saml Sr. au. Saml Jr. b. sr. au William au. 1794 Apparently, "au" means there was an autograph before 1800. Not sure about that. "a" means in Old Albemarle before 1761. "b" means Old Amherst (1761-1776) which was split from Albemarle in 1761. "sr" means Rev War vet. I think Samuel Sr. is father of Samuel Jr. of Winton. Samuel Jr. apparently had a brother named William. Maybe that is who the William is. Can anyone claim the others? In particular, I am rather sure that Rice is the Rice Meredith whose daughter Esther married Leonard Ballou who is also on Alexander Brown's list. What would really be helpful would be to place his relationship (if any) to the other Merediths in the area. Any help?
