He married Nancy Meredith in Surry County 6 Nov. 1801. The bondsman was Thomas C. Burch and witness William Meredith. She is believed to be a descendant of the family of James Meredith Sr. and Mildred (Bagby) Meredith of Stokes and Surry Counties. The William Meredith who was witness to the marriage bond is believed to be the Capt. William Meredith of Kings Mountain. Her father was James B. Meredith and mother was Nancy (Fulkasin) (Fulkison)(Fulkerson). I am searching for any source regarding these parents of Nancy Meredith. Nancy Fulkasin may have been of Cherokee Blood. Her granddaughter, my gggrandmother was of Cherokee Blood. Caleb Cotton's father has been stated as being a James Cotton. There have been different names of the mother of Caleb Cotton given. The names are Sarah Crouch, Blue Bird, & Shropsey. These names have come from information handed down by different descendants. This is all the information I have to go on. 1. [MEREDITH-L] MERIDETH, John (Bn, 1864 abt. died 1942 abt.) child of William MEREDITH
    2. John Merideth (1864-1942) ELYNE MITCHELL Merideth, John Baldwin Hoystead (1864-1942), soldier and doctor, was born on 11 November 1864 at Derrylough, Rosenallis, Queen's County, Ireland, seventh child of William Meredith, landowner, and his wife Annie, née Hoystead. The Merediths were a Welsh family. John was orphaned when he was 9 and was educated at Arlington College, Port Arlington. Unable to afford either an army commission or to play football for Ireland, in 1882-87 he studied medicine. In the leading hospitals in Dublin under the auspices of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, in 1888 he qualified as a licentiate of the Royal colleges of Surgeons and Physicians, Edinburgh, and of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow. He hoped to marry and practise in Ireland but decided, after asking his fiancée if she would go to one of the colonies, to try for a passage as ship's doctor. Only after signing on did he realize he was going to Australia. He arrived in 1888 and bought a practice at Raymond Terrace, New South Wales. His fiancée, Harriett Eveline Waters of Kildare, arrived two years later, after her father, who had prevented her leaving, had died. They were married on the day she landed, 20 May 1890, in St Philip's Anglican Church, Sydney. Of their three children, Marjorie married (Lieut-General Sir) Iven Mackay. Meredith became government medical officer for a large area. He had joined the Hunter River Light Horse and volunteered for the South African War, going as medical officer in the Citizen's Bushmen's Contingent in 1900. He served in Rhodesia, the Transvaal, Orange River Colony, Cape Colony and at the relief of Mafeking and was awarded the Queen's Medal with four clasps. In 1905, as second lieutenant, he formed a troop of light horse at Raymond Terrace, part of the 4th Light Horse Regiment; he was promoted captain in 1906 and major in 1908. Meredith took his family to England and Ireland in 1908-09 and was attached to the 18th Hussars for training in Ireland. While overseas, he bought a bull calf and a cow in calf for his Leigh Jersey stud and also a motor car. In 1910 he commanded the 4th Light Horse Regiment; promoted lieut-colonel in 1911, he commanded the 6th L.H.R. (Hunter River Lancers) in 1912. On the outbreak of World War I Meredith joined the Australian Imperial Force on 28th August 1914 in command of the 1st L.H.R. which fought dismounted on Gallipoli from May 1915 until the evacuation. In November he was temporary commander of the 1st Light Horse Brigade. In mid-January 1916, back in Egypt, the brigade was up the Nile from Cairo. In May Meredith commanded it in the Sinai desert while 'Fighting Charlie' Cox [q.v.8] had sick leave. He was in command during the battle of Romani when his three regiments held back the Turks throughout the night of 3-4 August. (Sir) Henry Gullett [q.v.9], in his official history, wrote: 'by their calm and dogged work in the night Romani had virtually been won'. Later, 'in February [1917] the 4th Australian Light Horse Brigade was created in Egypt under Meredith, who had handled the 1st Light Horse Brigade so admirably at Romani'. Meredith was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in December 1916 and in February 1917 the Order of the White Eagle (Serbia). He was promoted colonel and temporary brigadier general in May 1917 and in November, just before the battle of Beersheba, he embarked for Australia for 'family reasons'. His A.I.F. appointment ended on 3 January 1918. In 1921 he commanded the 2nd Cavalry Brigade, Australian Military Forces, and he retired in 1923 as honorary brigadier general. Meredith was a well-built, athletic man, with a great zest for life. He was successful and popular in medical practice. His Jersey stud was of great interest to him and he became vice-president of the Jersey Herd Society of New South Wales. He loved animals and had many pets, usually about nine dogs, retrievers, setters and pointers. After his wife's death, he married 20-year-old Alice Christina Mowbray Windeyer on 19th October 1921, at St John's Anglican Church, Raymond Terrace. Meredith died at Maitland on 1st January 1942 and was cremated. He was survived by a son and two daughters of his first marriage, and by his wife and four young sons. __________________________________________________________________________ jam_kinross@hotmail.com sent the following query to MEREDITH-L Rootsweb I'm looking for information on the family of: John Baldwin Hoystead Meredith (1864-1992), born November 11th at Derrylough Rosenallis Queens County Ireland. 2. This is a repost of a previous query .....Contact wiseowl@big.net.au if you can contribute information meredith Date:1/19/2004 7:15:20 PM Central Standard Time From:wiseowl@big.net.au To:Bluchp56@aol.com CC: BCC: Sent on: I recently came across your address while searching for information on Hannah Meredith. She was from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she married a Harry Gordon in 1755. She had children there and also had them in Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware, USA. There are several marriages for this couple. Harry Gordon and Hannah Meredith were married privately in 1755 by the Chaplain of a British Regiment in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I have located two other weddings for the couple. On 30 January 1762, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA there was a public wedding. Another occurred on 4 May 1763 at the old Trinity or old Swedes church in Wilmington, Newcastle, Delaware, USA. I noticed references to a Robert and Job Meredith, among others in Delaware in the information in rootsweb. Do you have anything that may connect my Hannah Meredith into your research. Hope to hear from you Judith

I am in possession of pictures of Franklin & Julia Meredith’s family, and some are labeled simply “Grandma Baker’s brothers and sisters – the Merediths. Perhaps you can help identify some of them. Franklin Meredith & Julia Ann Neldon are my great-great grandparents. I descend from: 1. John & Eva Neldon from Bedford County, PA, 2. Son: Frederick (b. 1781) married Eva Catherine Ween (about 1814 in PA.). 3. His daughter: Julia Ann Neldon (b. 1830 in Coshocton County, Ohio) married Franklin Meredith (b. 1828 in Coshocton County, Ohio ) on January 4, 1852. Franklin Meredith’s parents were: DAVE MEREDITH (b. 10/11/1780) and EVE NELDON, (b. 08/28/1790) the daughter of John & Eva Neldon from Bedford County, PA. and Sister of Frederick. Frank & Julia ended up in Harrison County, Missouri where my great grandmother, Luvina Elizabeth Meredith (b. 06-22-1862 in Indiana...they must have been on the move to Missouri??) married my great grandfather, William Henry Harrison BAKER on 09-07-1879. Their daughter, Alta May Baker (b. 12/23/1894) married James Benjamin Emory Snead (b. 10-01-1893) on October 13, 1922 in Denver, Harrison County, Missouri. One of their three children was my father, James William Snead, b. 10-26-1915 – d. 09-07-2001. My grandmother, Alta May Baker Snead, told me that Dave Meredith originally came from Delaware. She had occasion to see the Family Bible belonging to Eva Catherine Ween when it was in the possession of her grandmother, Julia Ann Meredith, and she said the Bible was written in German. She said that she realized the importance of the family history written on its pages and copied down as much as she could. This information though scant, she passed on to me. When Julia Meredith died, grandmother told me she no longer knew who had the Bible, but it was probably a Meredith descendant.

David's ancestors were 3 Job's originally from Wales either Radnorshire or Carmarthenshire in the 1600's. On several entries recently in this site the name Robert has come up as David's father and I wonder if Job changed his first name. 1. [MEREDITH-L] Welsh Names A simple guide to constructing 16th Century Welsh given and surname
    2. http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/welsh16.html A Simple Guide to Constructing 16th Century Welsh Names (in English Contexts) by Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn (Heather Rose Jones, hrjones@uclink.berkeley.edu ) copyright © 1996, all rights reserved The 16th century was in many ways a transition in Welsh naming practices between the Welsh way of doing things and the English way. While many Welsh names remained popular, English names were growing stongly in popularity and crowding out many of the less common traditional names. In theory, after Henry VIII passed the Act of Union, Welsh people were supposed to adopt English-style fixed, hereditary surnames, just as the English had been using for a considerable period at that point. In practice, the traditional Welsh patronyms and the use of personal nicknames didn't die out until long after the 16th century. During this century, you can find Welsh people mixing the two styles of names quite freely. Names were still quite fluid and the same person might appear one place as Katherine Vaughan and elsewhere as Katherine verch Edward. This pamphlet looks at the more typical names and name formats that appear in Welsh records during the 16th century. The sources for this pamphlet are a collection of late-16th century toll records from Pembrokeshire and summaries of legal procedings from Chancery records of the first half of the 16th century. For various practical reasons, I have used the first primarily for men's names and the second primarily for women's names. These records were written by primarily (if not exclusively) English- speaking people, and so you will not necessarily find "classical" Welsh spellings of names used. This pamphlet does not attempt to describe all the possible names and name patterns that could be found in 16th century Wales, but rather is a guide to how to construct a name that would be "typical" for the time and place. If you are interested in investigating the sources in more detail, see my articles Names and Naming Practices in Some North Pembrokeshire Toll Books (1599-1603) and Women's Names in the First Half of 16th century Wales. Given Names Men's Names The following names appear at least three times in my source documents. They are arranged in descending order of popularity and the most typical spelling(s) are given (also in order of popularity, if more than one is present). The modern "standard" spelling is given in square brackets. [John]John [David]David, Deyo [Thomas]Thomas [William]William, Wilkin, Gwillim [Ieuan]Ieuan, Yevan, Evan [Rhys]Rees, Res, Rice [Gruffudd]Griffith, Gruffith, Gryffyth [Lewis]Lewis, Lewes [Philip]Philipe [Jenkin]Jenkin [Morris]Moris [Owein]Owen [Richard]Richard [Hugh]Hughe [Henry]Harry, Henry [Hywel]Hoell, Howell [James]James [Morgan]Morgan [Robert]Robert, Hopkin [Llwyd]Lloid [Llywelyn]Llewelin, Llewelyn [Mathias]Mathias, Matho [Rhydderch]Rudderch, Rydderch [Einion]Eynon [George]George [Nicholas]Nicholas [Edward]Edward [Gwyn]Win, Wyn, Gwin, Gwyn [Maredudd]Meredith, Bedo [Peter]Peeter [Roland]Rowland, Roland [Walter]Walter, Gwallter, Watkyn [Francis]ffrancis, ffrances [Matthew]Mathew [Reynold]Rinold, Reynold, Reynallt Women's Names I have been more generous with the women's names and included all those for which identification is certain. The presentation is the same as for the men's names: descending order of popularity. [Margaret]Margaret, Margery [Joan/Jane]Joan, Jane, Jenet, Jenett [Katherine]Katherine [Elizabeth]Elizabeth [Agnes]Agnes, Annes, Nest, Neste [Alice]Alice [Gwenllian]Gwenlliana, Wenllyan, Gwenllyan [Anne]Anne [Maude]Maud, Maude [Ellen]Ellen, Elyn [Eleanor]Eleanor, Elynor, Elenor [Isabel]Isabel [Gwen]Gwen [Gwenhwyfar]Gwenhwyvar [Laurie]Lowrie, Lowry [Angharad]Angharad [Gweirfyl]Gwervyl, Gwerfyl [Mary]Mary [Rose]Rose [Dorothy]Dorothy [Juliana]Juliana [Lleucu]Lleyke, Llyke, Lucy [Amy]Amy [Cecily]Cecily, Syslye [Christian]Christyan, Christiana, Crislye, Crisly [Dyddgu]Dyddgu, Duthgy [Morfudd]Morvith, Morvyth [Tacy]Tacy [Alison]Alison [Emma]Emma [Eve]Eve [Joyce]Joyce [Antonia]Antonia [Beatrice]Beatrice [Florence]Florence [Fortune]Fortune [Frances]Frances [Gwladus]Gwladyse [Judith]Judithe [Llewelydd]Lewelyth [Mabilia]Mabiley [Mathilda]Matilde [Myfanwy]Mevanwy [Susan]Susan [Tangwystl]Tanglust Name Patterns As I mentioned above, there is a confusing mix of Welsh and English patterns in names. For any particular name, you cannot be certain whether someone has a fixed surname or a personal nickname. Here are the most typical patterns that are found. Patronyms Most people's names tell their ancestry for one or more generations -- nearly 90% of the people have names of this sort. Most typically, only the father's name is indicated (about three- quarters of the time); more rarely the father and grandfather are given (one-fifth of the time). Very rarely, the great- grandfather's name is also given, but never more than this. (It extremely rare, although not unheard-of, for a mother's name to be used.) In contrast to the Welsh patronyms of previous centuries, the most typical pattern is for ap (son of) to be omitted. Thus, patronyms most typically appear to be simply two or three given names in a row. (This last should not be thought of as having a "middle name", however.) It is quite rare for a name to have a patronym and any other type of byname. In some cases, what appears to be a patronym may actually be an inherited surname. For a woman, her given name would be followed by verch instead of ap. Women are less likely to omit this part of the structure than men are. Here are the typical patterns of names with patronyms, in order of popularity. Actual examples of each type of name have been given. <given name> <father's given name> Griffith David Agnes Owen <given name> <father's given name> <grandfather's given name> David William Thomas (no women's examples with this pattern) <given name> ap <father's given name> Lewis ap Rees Gwen verch Ieuan <given name> ap <father> ap <grandfather> David ap Hoell ap Griffith Margaret verch Gruffith ap Gwyn With some names, ap can combine with the following name as a single word. The following are typical examples: [Owen]» Bowen [Hywel] » Powell [Henry] » Penry, Parry [Einion] » Beynon [Rhys] » Price E.g. Richard Powell Henry Bowen Lewis In some cases with a single patronym (only the father), we find examples where an s has been appended to the end of the name, rather than ap before it. The following are typical examples: [Hywel]» Hoells [Henry]» Harris [John]» Jones [Ieuan]» Evans [Philip]» Philipes [Edward]» Edwards [Walter]» Walters E.g. Hughe Johnes For the most part, these combined forms are rarer than ones with ap. Non-Patronymic Bynames The other typical pattern for names is a given name followed by a single other byname. These other names may derive originally from a place-name, from a personal nickname, from an occupation, or may be an inherited surname of non-Welsh origin. These four types of names appear in roughly equal proportions, but all of them are much less common than patronyms. (Recall that only about a tenth of the people have this sort of name.) I have mentioned only ones that appear more than once or that are known from earlier records. Place-Names Place-names may appear as inherited surnames, but in many cases the place involved is the village or region where the person lives. The name of the place appears by itself, without using of or any other connector. E.g. John Narberth Anne Powes Personal Nicknames The following are some typical Welsh nicknames that appear, in decreasing order of popularity: gray, brown[Llwyd]Lloid, Lloyd white, fair[Gwyn]Win, Gwin, Wyn (masc.) Wen (women would use this) red[Coch]Goch, Cooke small, junior[Bychan]Vaughan tall[Hir]Hire, Hyre E.g. David Vaughan Alice Lloyd English words that derive from personal nicknames are more likely to be inherited surnames, but some such as Younge [young], Whit [white], and Browne [brown] may be translations of the equivalent Welsh nicknames (bychan, gwyn, llwyd). Occupations As above, some of these may be inherited surnames, rather than the actual profession of the person bearing the name. smith[gof]Smith y gove [y gof, i.e. "the smith"] doctor[meddyg] Methig carpenter[saer] Saer E.g. David Saer Thomas y Gove Anne Harper Non-Welsh Surnames In general, one can expect that these belong to people whose families moved into Wales from England or elsewhere. In theory, almost any English surname of this period might have ended up in Wales, and you can find this type of surname being used with unmistakably Welsh given names. A Particular Note On Women's Names A woman of this period in Wales might bear a true patronym (i.e., using her father's name), or might inherit something that looks like a patronym as a fixed surname, or might inherit a non- patronymic surname, or might have a personal nickname. If she married, she would be considerably more likely to keep her "maiden name" than to take her husband's name. If she did take her husband's name, she might use his surname (even if it were a true patronym!) or use his given name as a surname. It is sometimes difficult to tell from the records if a woman would actually be known as something like Elizabeth ap William or whether this is a mistake by an English-speaking clerk who simply assigned her her husband's "surname" without understanding what it meant. 1. [MEREDITH-L] MERIDETH of Kent County, Delaware (great amount of info from Ron Merideth)
    2. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~merideth/ The Merideth Family of Kent Co., Delaware My ancestor, Taylor Merideth was born about 1780 in the state of Delaware. He was married several times and had a large family. I believe he died about 1850 in Delaware. In my search for information about Taylor I have accumulated much information about the Merediths of Delaware & their descendants who migrated west. This web site is my attempt to share much of that information with other Meredith researchers. Most of the posted information was abstracted or transcribed from original sources such as Wills, Probate Records, Land Records, Tax Lists, Indenture Records, Letters, Bible Records, etc. Anyone having similar information which they would like to post please e-mail me. My Other Website (http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/e/r/Ronald-H-Merideth/index.html) GEDCOM of Delaware Merideths Probate The following are Meredith family Probate Records from Kent County, Delaware, abstracted from the records of the State Archive in Dover. Those records after 1893 have not been abstracted. They are listed as Index entries. If anyone needs an abstract of any of these e-mail me. Probate Records I believe that the progenator of the Meredith family in Kent Co., Delaware was Robert Meredith senior of Dorchester Co., Maryland. The following are items from Robert's probate in 1727. Inventory of Robert Meredith Elizabeth Meredith renunciates her right to administer to her son Job Meredith Land Records The following are links to abstracts from land records which contain valuable genealogical information about the Meredith family of Delaware & Eastern Maryland: This deed contains proof that Job had at least two wives. It names his first wife, Rebecca Davis, and is signed by Job & his second wife Lydia. It is also signed by his sons & daughter by wife number one. Job Merydith to John Potts 1786 This deed was Acknowledged in open court in 1793. It confirms a transaction made by the fathers of both parties in 1747. It names both their fathers. Surprise! Job's father is not Job. Thomas Moor to Job Merydith sr. An 1808 deed which proves that Davis Meredith of Kent Co., De and Davis Meredith of Monongalia Co., Va. are the same person. Davis Meredith and Wife (Of Monongalia Co., Va.) to Job Meredith This 1760 Deed names the heirs of John Wheeler including Robert Meredith & wife Rachel. Looks like Rachel's last name was Wheeler. William Wheeler from Wheeler heirs Merideth Family Records This is a collection of abstracted records from Tax lists, Land records, Probate records, Court records, Apprentice indentures, Poor house records, Births, Deaths, Marriages, Bibles, Tombstone, Church records, etc. Most were abstracted from microfilm of the original records. They are divided into three files and arranged chronologically. Part 1 1722-1799 Part 2 1800-1839 Part 3 1840-1976 POOR HOUSE Some Merediths went through difficult times. These are Poor House records from Kent Co., Delaware involving Merediths. It names his parents, wives and children and contains many births, marriages & deaths. John Wheeler Meredith Letter CHURCH The Cow Marsh Baptist Church was built on a corner of the Meredith homestead. The land was first leased to the church for a token amount by Job Meredith d.1793. Later the land was sold, also for a token amount, to the church by his son Job Meredith jr. Following is a list of church members copied from the original records by Miss Bertha Frazier in 1947. The copy I have is typed but has been photocopied so many times that it is hard to read. Names which I am unsure of are in brackets. I don't know what happened to the original church rec ords, but would certainly like to.
