    1. [MEPENOBS-L] 1850 Census, State of Maine
    2. Donna Gene Tyler Cummings
    3. Greetings, I am sending this to the Maine lists I belong to. I hope someone who is really "in the know" will have an answer or a good idea. There is something I have long thought about wanting to do, and it may or may not be utterly crazy. Or, maybe it has already been done. Or, maybe it shouldn't be done at all. So here it is: I would like to be part of transcribing the 1850 census for the State of Maine so that it would be online. I would like to do it at my own pace, with no pressure, as my plate is so full now I feel like I never finish anything. So why would I want to add one more thing? Well, believe it or not, I know that this type of word processing would replace tv-viewing or the like as something that would give me pleasure. How would anyone go about doing this? Has it been done... half-done ... attempted... started?? I welcome knowledgeable answers but if you're only guessing, please respond privately so we don't bother anyone on the lists. 3. This sound somewhat like what Ray Sears <lrsears@capecod.net> is trying to do. Someone has to find and buy a printed copy of whatever you want to digitize. Then his procedure (just getting started) is to scan pages, OCR the scanned pages, send the OCR'd page(s) to volunteers for proof-reading and making best possible accurate file from the copy. Some obvious complications are the relative skills of various volunteers, their time commitments, aggrement on a single computer format for output, etc. If you get something like this started, count me in! 3. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------EEDACB7C2A698B1C0A947760 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit There is an effort by RootsWeb and I think the URL is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgw/census/info/ All the info is there. How to get the census, the best way to view it and transcription info. Good luck, a noble effort!
