Grace Mae Hillman was born in 1927 in Dixfield, the daughter of Arthur Hillman, Sr. and Leola Durrell Brown. She was educated at Dixfield High School and graduated with distinction from the University of Maine with a degree in psychology. For years she was employed at the Fogler Library before joining her husband at Howland's Painting Company in Old Town.
