A kind correspondent found my grandmother Henrietta Gould aged 16 living with another family in Corinth Maine. Guessing that her situation indicated that one or both of her parents had died before 1850, I searched the 1840 and 1850 census indexes (free on Ancestry at the time) for Goulds in Corinth. Samuel, Asa and Aaron were listed in 1840 but missing in 1850. Then in Ruth Gray's "Abstracts of Penobscot County Maine Probate Records 1816-1866" was a listing of Aaron's will probated in 1842 which mentioned his "Wife Sarah C., son George Boardman, dau Henrietta, dau Martha Ann; chn are minors under 14." (12:496, 8:42). And in Gray's "Marriage Returns..." the marriage 3 Apr. 1830 of Aaron and Sarah C. Haynes "both of Corinth" was listed. Samuel Gould of Corinth died in Dec. 1848 or Jan 1849. His will listed "Wife Hannah executor. Chn: Robinson, Hiram, Alvin, Samuel, Asa, Bathuel, Mahala, Pierce, Irenena; granddaughters, heirs of Aaron and Sarah C. Gould, Martha, Henrietta" (16:279). The list of Sam's heirs seems to be boys first, then girls, so it's no help in guessing the order of birth. But let's say Aaron was born about 1810, Samuel would likely have been born 1790 or earlier, more likely about 1780. And perhaps not in Corinth or even in Maine. Where should I look for info on Samuel? Stewart Rowe
