Hello all - I've just discovered that my ggggrandfather was born in Dixfield and I am looking for help as to how to get more info on him. His Civil War papers say he was 30 in 1864, making him born in 1833 0r 34. He moved (at some point) to Grafton, MA where my gggranfather (William Emery Marsh) was born in 1863. William's wife's name was Louisa ????. The names John, Leonard and Emery appear in many of his ancestors names. In looking at the Oxford County site I see that there were a number of Marshes in Dixfield in the early 1800's. Anyone have ideas for me?? Also, we think he may have been part Native American as his Army papers list him as dark complected with black hair. I am looking for any information on OLIVER FROST, the son of Sarah Frost-Russell. She came to Maine in the 1780s with her second husband, Abel Russell, and the two sons of her first marriage, Oliver and John Frost. They lived in Fayette. Oliver appears (at least I think it is him) in a court case in Readfield in 1803, and I think he might have gone to Bangor where he might be the one that is listed in the 1810 census for Bangor. I would like to know if he married and who his children were, and where he went after 1810. Thanks! Phil Noss

Hi, I hope someone out there can help me.......... My great-grandmother Elizabeth Abigail (nee Winslow) Chapman was born is Lowell, MA in 1866. She married my great-grandfather William Edmund Chapman and resided in Bethel, ME until her death in 1911. I have looked in both 1860 and 1870 Lowell, MA. census and cannot find her family listed. Someone said Lowell may have been made part of Maine around the time of her birth. I know her parents were both born in England. Any suggestions on how to find Richard Winters Winslow and his wife Rebecca Wallace Winslow? Pam Weeks
Betty: The largest cemetery in Paris is Riverside in South Paris, and its annex, about half way up Paris Hill. Generally, "Paris" is considered to be the "Hill" and "South Paris" is the major population center at the base of the hill. I am not sure whether or not the Paris cemeteries are catalogued in the MOCA (Maine Old Cemetery Association) listings, but the town office in Paris has relatively complete listings of "residents" of the many town cemeteries. (MOCA listings are available at the State Library in Augusta and at the Maine Historical Society in Portland.) Also, a letter to the Paris Cape Historical Society in South Paris, with specific details on the burials you seek, would probably be fruitful. (It would be polite, and expeditious, to include a stamped envelope.) Also, for $6.00, the Maine State Archives will do a search and send you a "plain" copy of almost any death record after 1892 and many before that date. If they can't find the record, they will return the money. If a death record exists, especially after 1892, it will often list the place of burial. Hope this helps, Larry Glatz Harrison, Maine

Betty, Using http://www.topozone.com/ and doing a search for Paris ME...... selecting 1:25,000 turns up a number of cemeteries in the town of Paris, 2 with no name in the village area, then I used the right arrow and found the Whittemore cemetery to the east of the village, again I used the right arrow, this shows 2 seemily small cemeteries and the eastern town boundary. You would have to do quite a few selections using the arrows to cover the town at this resolution. You would have a very good idea as to the cemeteries in Paris. Good Luck! Many THANKS to all of the folks who responded to my request in late October for information about poorhouses in Maine. You sent in LOTS of information which has now been posted to The POORHOUSE STORY website (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses)at http://www.poorhousestory.com So I would like to invite you to return to the site where you can now find the following: --- Notes from Readers: about poorhouses in Boothbay [Lincoln County] and Presque Isle [Aroostook County] --- Sylvia Sebelist's wonderful photo scrapbook essay about Annual Town Meeting Records regarding the poor farm in Waterford [Oxford County] --- Jean F. Hankins' previously unpublished article -- "Over the Hill to the Poorhouse": The Otisfield Town Farm, 1865 - 1924. [CUMBERLAND County] This article gives perspective on historic poorhouse trends throughout the state, and it will be of interest to residents of other counties as well. --- Clayton Spencer's e-mail comments which (after we twisted his arm! <grin>)he allowed us to present as another article which we have titled: Historical Survey of Methods of Poor Relief in Maine. (This article has reference to the town of Machias in WASHINGTON County.) He explains more about the use of Annual Town Meeting Reports when doing poorhouse research. If you have been to our site recently, you will probably have to click REFRESH on your browser to see the new material. If you are new to the site, DIRECTIONS: at the homepage (link above)click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then click on OTHER STATES, then click on MAINE on the table of states. Note: It appears that Maine did not have a system of COUNTY Poorhouses, but instead had many (Jean has told me that she found more than 30!) TOWN poor farms. We would welcome any further information you wish to share. Hope you enjoy the site! Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
