Usually there were one or more names following, and one of the other names was the one used to refer to that person. So your ancestor could have been baptized as Joseph Louis, but was known to most people as Louis. Have you been able to obtain his marriage or death records? Sometimes they will include his parents names. If you can get back to a marriage that took place in Quebec, we might be able to help you.
