Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/mA1.2ACIB/385 Message Board Post: I'm trying to figure out what happened to my 4G grandfather, Jonas Manary. His second wife was Elizabeth Sarah Menard, they were married 23 March 1843 in Morgan County, IL. They moved to Keokuk County, IA where they apparently had at least the following children: Muhala, Morgan, Sarah, Francis, and Maria (or possibly Mona, it's hard to read!) Jonas and his family are in Keokuk County in 1850, but then he disappears; I can't find a death or burial record for him in Keokuk or any of the surrounding counties. In 1860, Elizabeth is apparently married to an Isaac Alexander and living with him in Keokuk County, IA, but I can't find a marriage record in Keokuk or the surrounding counties. She's the same age, still illiterate, and the Manary children are living with them, so I'm sure it's her! I'm hoping that if I can trace Elizabeth Sarah Menard, perhaps through family records or legend since there doesn't seem to be an official record, that it will at least narrow down the what, when & where for Jonas Manary. Can anyone help? Sincerely, Stacey Hunter

Joseph Menard died in 1865 in Dresbach, Winona Co. MN. He is buried in Menard Cemetery. From the information that I have, Joseph Menard and wife, Catherine Sophia (Roy) Menard, lived in Dresbach, Winona Co. from the early 1850's. I have been told that Joseph opened the first lime kiln in Dresbach, was a leader of the French colony, also kept the hotel for the stage and freight haulers, and loggers. Joseph and Catherine are listed on the 1860 census with son Felix for Dresbach. My problem is that, his wife Catherine Sophia has disappeared for me,after Joseph's death. Rumour is that she was sent to White Earth Reservation, and that she is listed on their rolls, but if so, I can not find this reference anywhere. Also, and you may not know the answer, daughter Catherine Isabelle (Isabella), was married to Tibbetts, on March 21, 1853 in Dresbach. Supposedly the 1st marriage in Dresbach. Since records were not kept in Dresbach until 1854, where would this marriage be recorded? I want to thank you for taking the time to try to assist me, and the census info that you sent to me are definitely my people. Have a great day Pam

I guess we're hampered by the sheer number of Menards. Can you imagine if 16 children survived from that one family, how many descendants there are? I only remember that this family had some milliners and glassblowers among their number. I don't know of any fur traders nor of any officials. I'll keep plodding on. Thanks, again, and good luck with your search.

Leonor was one of 10 children, but I don't have their dates, spouses, etc., except for three of the boys. Also, there is an Eleanore Menard, parents Pierre-Amable and Marie-Louise Moreau, who married Joseph Hortez in 1806. I don't have either the Hottinger or Curry name or any Josephine Menards, but I have a Celina, daughter of Francois Menard and Philomene Gravel, who married Octave Durocher in 1895. Also a Celine, daughter of Julien Menard and Sophie Odelin, who married Regis Brault in 1874. These dates don't seem to line up with your family, however. There were a lot of Menards, and it seems as if the same first names were popular with all of them! We thought for years that we were descended from the Pierre Menard who was first lieutenant governor of Illinois, but definitely we are not! Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Best, Rebecca

As I've hit so many dead-ends with this apparently popular name, I was wondering if you would know of Pierre and Leonore (Eleanor) Menard from Quebec (Montreal) who had 21 children, 16 of whom survived, which included three sets of twins (one set of twins drowned). My grandmother was Josephine Ada Menard (b. 10/13/1881), who emigrated to Muncie, Indiana from Canada and married David Curry and after his death married Rudolph Hottinger. Josephine was 20th of 21 children; only other sibling name is 21st child, Celina or Selina. Pierre & Leonore apparently came to Indiana at some point, but I can't find this. Thanks for any help!
