My family also had the milkman deliver our milk. My Mom especially liked the cream on the top of the bottle of milk and would pour it off to save for her coffee. When we had a special dessert, the cream would be whipped with a little vanilla and some confectioners sugar for a pretty and delicious topping. Other times the milk would be mixed with the cream and enjoyed as really rich milk used for drinking or for making puddings or junket. (remember that?) The milkman also delivered fresh eggs, butter and other dairy products. The Dugan man - bread man in our town in New Jersey, had bread and coffee cakes. My grandmother lived across the street from us and she and my Mom would have coffee klotches with coffee cake or some homemade crullers. We all looked forward to the day the crullers were made! When my children were little, we also had milk delivery. The insulated metal box was placed by the door with the empty bottles picked up and the new milk bottles replacing them. Very convenient and really didn't cost a lot more than going to the store. We also had milk machines that we used when the kids were older. Milk was available any time of the day or night. Quarters in the slot and the milk carton was dropped into the box, lift the lid and you had milk for the cereal in the am. We actually could have milk delivered in our area now, but, our milk usage isn't that great and we are able to keep our supply in the refrigerator when we need it. Mom really liked having the deliveries and loved those coffee cakes! And she was always the skinny one in the family, go figure!! They all came three times a week and I think that is why house wives back then were not lonely because every day someone came to the house. To tell the truth I miss this way of life because it brought human contact to our house and happy people. Annette. After moving to Arizona in 1945, we did get milk delivered. I don't remember when the local suppliers stopped home deliveries. I do remember that there were some "milk depots" that opened here in the 1950s. You could just drive in and tell them what you wanted and they would collect the money and bring the product out and place it in your car. When you went there for the first time, you had to pay a deposit on the container. After that, you returned the empties when you got more milk. If for any reason you decided to stop buying milk at their store, you could return the empties and get a refund on your deposit. The containers were glass.
