This is a good idea. I know the service people don't make the kind of money most people think they make. Grandson is in the navy and they have two little ones. Making a house payment. Two kids in school. Lunches at school aren't cheap. Two vehicles because he has to have one and she needs one to take the kids to school. So alot of expences out even though they shop at the commisary and any place they can cheap, But they are getting by. He has four more years and will retire at 22 years I think it is as he had to extend beyond his 20 years to get a ship based in San Diego. Thank goodness as it isn't good for a marriage to have them across the country all the time. Still has his time at sea, but ship comes back to San Diego. He has to go back to school as he was alway on Destroyers and this time it will be a smaller ship so has to learn some different things with the engines. So this will be interesting, at least the school is in San Diego and not across country. Eventually he will have to go when the ship is built and comes alive with the guys on board. Interesting life. He will be early 40's when he gets out and can still go in another direction if he wants to. As you see I am kind of proud of him. I had one brother that went in the navy in July 1941. He put in 30 years and retired Chief. During WW2 he was a gunner in dive bombers, in the south pacific on the USS Enterprise. Later he served on the next Enterprise they built. But that one was in the atlantic area.
