In the 1960's and later, many homes were built on a large flood plain in Orange County, I don't mean just one or two, but thousands. If you look at the history of this area, it's where they had these hundred year floods. Even thought they have built food control channels, the natural flow of water will not be diverted entirely, and I think property and lives will be lost in the future. I have never thought much about the force of water, till I saw two tsunamis - the one in Thailand and than the one in Japan, what I saw on TV made a lasting impression on me, I will never look at water the same way again. On the way up the pacific coast, especially through Oregon, on the coast Highway you will see signs that read "entering Tsunami zone" or "leaving Tsunami Zone" also we use to love a RV park in Winchester Bay, Oregon, great Salmon fishing, where we parked we were backed up to a area, of beautiful trees, ivy, berries, ferns, wild flowers, and if you went in back of all this beauty, there was a big hill, with small trails going up. When you registered at the office, they gave you a paper that told you were in a Tsunami area, and if the siren went off, you were to get out and climb the back hill, goes as far up as you could go, or if you had time to drive up into the hills around the Bay. It has always been a dream of mine to buy a home that was as close to the beach as possible, not any more. Maybe a home with a ocean view, but not down on the beach, where if the Tsunami came at night, there would be no escape. I respect the force of water NOW !!! It is just a matter of time as these weather issues happen periodically over periods of hundreds or thousands of years. There is good geological evidence that drenching and worse yet steady rain over a period of days to weeks will innundate the Central Valley of Northern California causing massive damage to life and property and untold billions of dollars in destruction as the whole valley floor may well be covered in mud measured in feet. I don't believe that this is one of those periods. At least I hope not. But I never ceased to be amazed at the short term views and lack of foresight of those who are lulled into building in precarious spots, either on the sides of hills which are too steep and covered with fuel, or in valleys where flooding is an issue. It's going to rain off and on thru Sunday afternoon, with some thunder and lightening too. We are going to get snow in the mountains, all weekend. I went on our WEb-cam, not snowing yet, but they say soon. We have never had problems with mud slides here at our home, but you just never know what's going to happen where water is a concern. Most people don't have flood insurance, unless they live in a flood zone, but at times things do flood, some times as a freak of nature !!! The mud flows are in the area that had wildfires a few months ago, up in the Glendora hills, right below the San Gabriel mountains. With no grass or shrubs, trees, to hold the dirt in the hills, and when we get a lot of rain in a short time, that dirt turns to mud, with rocks, old tree limbs and any debre left over from the wild fires, it rolls down the hills, clogs the water basins, and the mud than runs down street, and over into any yards, and into homes. They have taken measures by using K-rail (big concrete dividers like in the middle of freeways), and sand bags everywhere they think the mud could flow, but sometimes the mud is too much for it and just goes around them, over them, or just pushes them out of the way. It is sad to see these people lose their homes, some old like us, they never rebuild, not enough insurance to cover the cost !! Keep these people in your prayers, they could even lose their lives. My goodness, Californians give up a lot for that laid back lifestyle! I have a nephew in LA, but don't think he lives anywhere near the countryside where mud slides are expected.
