Most of my clothes were home made, plus my mother and aunts would often buy the same patterns and material. Not that we lived that close to the aunts but a good buy was hard to pass up so they shared. I remember one/three dresses that were beautiful at first but by the time I also had two hand-me-downs, I hated to have that dress laid out for school. It was a deep red with a key hole opening in the bodice, with white hand stitching from shoulders to the bottom. Just a tiny turned hem at the bottom as the pieces were gored and ran from shoulder to hem. Some where I have a picture of me in a dress that I am sure was made from feed sacks. I think it was probably my first grade picture. It had a peter pan collar that was edged in rick rack. Mom was very penny conscious and sometimes even cut up old garments to make new ones. I also have a picture of my brother, about 3-4 in an out door coat that she had made from an old gray wool coat of hers. When I was wearing the dresses with sashes, I always wanted Aunt Cora to be there to tie my bows. She made them look so pretty. I think about mom or one of my aunts making our clothes on the treadle machines and then the starching and ironing involved. Women think the have a lot to do today.
