I have been using electronic banking for quite a few years now. I rarely write a check anymore. My only complaint (so far) is when I needed a copy of my check to prove when it was deposited. My bank said that would cost me $2.00. I said no, it would cost me nothing as it was not MY idea for them to keep my checks. They could start sending them all back to me and I could look up my own. She said $2.00 once more; I repeated my option. I got my copy for nothing. If you need a copy don't let them snow you. Leaving your checks in the bank was not your choice...THEY decided. A lot of their charges are forgotten if you make enough noise. Banks are on the look-out for more fees and ours has started charging $8.95 a month to get a hard copy of the banking statement.....they quit returning cancelled checks a few years ago. Electronic banking is easier in many ways but still makes me nervous. I like to see print outs of all the transactions and also see the cancelled checks but I guess I have to resign and say "time marches on"......it's moving too fast and all the high tech things are out of date about the time a person buys them - replaced by some thing faster more sophisticated. Reminds me of my dad saying "I'm just a back number" when the electric typewriters came on the scene. He'd just mastered the old manual typewriter with one finger pecking out the letters. My grandmother was only 14 yrs. old, working nights in a newspaper office, operating a linotype machine - in the 1890's. A modern girl. juanita > Hi Jeannie. I have also been using electronic banking for paying my bills. I still get a paper statement but no checks are returned. It is not important since I write very few checks. I can bring up a copy of most checks I write by viewing my account on line. If I write a check to make a charitable contribution, the donee sometimes treats my check like an electronic funds transfer. When that happens, no copy of the check can be retrieved since it is not returned to my bank. I get receipts for all of my transactions at the time I authorize the payment. These contain a confirmation number and I keep a copy of that until I see the actual entry on my bank statement. If a donation is treated as an EFT I will get a letter from the recipient acknowledging the gift. The letter shows the amount of the gift. I keep these in my income tax folder every year. Our bank does have an option on line to see both front and back of our cancelled checks. If we want a hard copy, suppose we could print it .... so far I've not asked for one. I suspect various accounts are handled differently by the bank. I remember a time after we retired that the bank held parties, gave gifts, sponsored low cost travel trips and treated retirees royally. They may be glad when some of the older depositors are gone, especially if they had foresight to tie up some of their savings accounts at a higher interest rate than are offered now. juanita > My only complaint (so far) is when I > needed a copy of my check to prove when it was deposited.
