We had a sort of playhouse in the foundations of an old stable or barn and spent many hours mixing poke berries and ditch water to make pretty bottles of 'water' to decorate the stone walls...Different amounts of berries mashed into the water made different hues...A neighbor boy had a small bottle of poke berry juice in his pocket at school..I can only guess what he planned to do with it...He sat too close to the big heating stove in the middle of the one room school and the bottle exploded in his pocket.
