When I was a little girl, we had a couple of major snow storms, one right after the other, followed by very low temps. The snow was so high that it more than covered the top of the chain link fence our neighbor had around her yard. The freezing temps formed a deep crust of frozen snow on the surface, and we actually walked over to our neighbor on top of the snow and her fence. It did feel strange walking around outside about 3 or 4 feet higher than the ground! With this same snow, my Dad shoveled out the driveway, piling the snow on top of that already on the ground. The snow plow would come along and plow out the street, piling the snow along the edge of the street and into my Dad’s shoveled-out driveway, and he had to go out and dig out the car again. The end result of all this was a very high (maybe 6-8 feet) mound of snow at the corner of the driveway and the street, and a lower, but still high (maybe 4-5 feet), mound of snow along the side of the driveway. We kids knew what to do with that! We dug tunnels into those mounds, so that you could go from one end of the driveway to the other walking under the snow! We would walk in one end and come out the other, then walk around and go in the first end again, in endless cycles. We really had great fun with that. All of the kids from around the area had discovered our tunnels through the snow, and they shared in our fun. We would be sitting at dinner, and could hear the squeals of laughter from a group of kids who happened to wander by while we were inside. Ever after that, I had wanted to do that again, but we never did have that much accumulated snow again. Hi Lisa, Yes, we did the asking through our Senior Center, no go at any Scout or Church org.'s. We have asked every group we know and no one shovels out the elderly or disabled. I have no young members of family to ask-so i am up a creek withut a paddle. Last year one of my adult nephews came and helped me-but he has since mved to another town! The thing here is the cars must be cleaned off and moved for the snow plow-if not moved they will be towed-and I understand but it sure is hard on us. Tomorrow I will have to get out and clear the car off and move it-not good for my knee-I am hoping a young man I spoke to today will get over here and help me out-----he was helping shovel our walks and was a very nice young man-I offered to pay him if he will come by and clear off my car. The weatherman at 11 said we will get four warmer days and another snow storm on Sunday, hope he is wrong!!! Helen
Yes, they predicted 3-6 inches for us but it looks more like 8 to me too. At one time quite a few years ago, one of the boy scout troop leaders tried to get something like this organized but for some reason, it never panned out. Is your Senior Center active? Maybe the center can get something started either with the scouts or with the schools. Kids usually need community service hours. In our high school, the different classes often take on a charity - maybe someone can suggest this? When I was growing up, we always helped our parents shovel, and shoveled for others for a few bucks. When we had a ton of snow, we would all go out to get the driveway done. My husband does the driveway with a snowblower now but he's burning out on that too. Sorry about your knee - keep using the ice, and elevate it as much as you can. I think we are done with the snow for a while - it's supposed to be 50 by the end of the week. Barb and I did not fight, she did not violate any ML rule. NO ONE criticized her. She is back on the list. Welcome back Barb, margy
Living here in Ca. we don't get snow much especially in the Sacramento valley. I am told, in around 1935 we did have snow over night. Of course mom and dad coming from eastern Or. and alot of snow didn't think it was all that bad, but she was afraid us kids would get sick I guess as I don't remember playing in it. But, we had the out house. Well there was a path, but that path got changed every time some one went. Checking out the snow. I am sure school was closed. We would wander off the path I am sure. Have had a little snow once in a while since then. but nothing that lasts very long. Just snow for maybe a couple hours during the day. Every time they say we might get snow over night I have to look out every time I am up. Have had freezing weather once in a while, but no snow. Of course I am not sure we could really keep warm if we had snow. But we are ready. every thing wrapped and secure. Getting late bed is calling me. Louise
Who cares what Barb said or didn't say? Who cares who responded or didn't respond? Who cares who got their panties in a wad and dropped the list? Can this subject just be dropped? I am beginning to feel like I'm back in the 4th grade listening to conversations in the bathroom. I'm all for freedom of speech, but this shit is getting old. Somehow I don't have any memories of shoveling snow. I have one sister who is about two years than I am and she didn't shovel snow either. We had rather a long driveway and I think my dad just drove through it once on the way to work. He was a milk man and probably parked in the middle of the street while he went up to the houses and back. I do remember our street got plowed with a road grader--no big plows like we have now. I have to get some pictures out that we took as "pin up" pictures to send to all the guys we wrote to around the world in WW2. I can't believe we got our two piece suits on and posed in the snow. Youth--long gone. Sure wish I still had the body to do something that silly. How about we get back to some good old fashioned memories? I have been thinking about all the snow I have had to shovel over my life. As a kid it was fun, as I got close to my teens-I shoveled my grandparents driveway and walks and I earned a whole fifty cents(yes,.50)in 1954 or 55 that was a good amount of money for a girl to have in her pocket! As we got older we shoveled to help our folks etc. so they could go to work or the corner store for cigarettes etc. or so the bread or milkman could deliver on the usual days. After I was married, I loved going out and clearing the steps and walks-my husband did the driveway with a plow. As the kids grew they would help shovel until they were old enough to do it all and I stayed inside and made the hot chocolate! Now in my old age-there are no kids anyplace who care to help shovel my car out--on Sunday I blew out my left knee shoveling--was awake all night in pain-yesterday the swelling was really huge---iced it down all day, the swelling is going down now but darn-someone should help the old folks! We have asked Boy Scout Troop, CYO at churches, and all we can think of and nobody lets their kids go shovel walks are dig out cars to make a few $$$$. Helen, I sure am glad I don't have that problem and wish you didn't either. When I was growing up in Arkansas, I was too young to be shoveling snow. This was during the depression and not too many people had any money to pay for that kind of thing. That notwithstanding, I probably wouldn't have done it anyhow. Not that I was lazy, I just didn't like to be out in cold weather. Didn't like it when I was a kid and still don't like it. I remember that Mother would dress us up in snow suits and send us out to play when there was snow on the ground. I was good for maybe five minutes then it was back inside where it was warm. The temperature here seldom gets to freezing...maybe two or three nights during December to January. I don't like to be outside if the temperature is below 50 degrees. I am not built for cold weather. Robert E. I also want to know what Barbara wrote about, and who criticize what she said? I have noticed over the years, not one person on this list ever CRITICIZES ANY OF THE MEN ON THIS LIST, THEY CAN SAY ANYTHING, do anything, not one word of disagreement, what ever cames out of their mouths. Sometimes this is the only voice some of our members have !! As we age we change, our needs change, I have always thought (at least on this list, we let people say what they must). I have noticed, also that those who criticize the most, write very little to no Memories. If we didn't write about how we feel, what we have done that day, this list would die !!! I have worked in a lot of originations over the years, PTA, Girl scouts, boy scouts, little league, worked in schools helping get the school newspaper out, volunteered in Children's hospital, a Sunday school teacher for many years, also as a church councilor at Summer camp, and many, many, more places, and I have found that those who criticize the most, do the least. My mother always told me, that when someone is picking on you, at least they are leaving some other poor soul alone, maybe someone who couldn't take it good you can. Isn't it hard enough getting old, and our health failing, without fellow senior citizens criticizing every thing we say. Shame on You ??? who ever you are !!! Sully, in Sunny California
Margy, I never saw the post or anything about it until Louise mentioned it-I think a lot of messages are being dropped for some reason. Is this because she posted something people disagreed with or did she violate some rule? Helen
