Yes, I'm in Massachusetts. Even the tomatoes from the farm stand were lousy. Although, I can't ever seem to find great tomatoes now. Maybe it's me, but I really used to look forward to some great tomatoes in the summer, but now they just don't seem to taste the way they used to. You are in New England, right, Lisa? I didn't find a decent tomato all year, either imported or grown in our area. Tasteless and if you dropped it on your foot you would break your foot!! the cold fronts, we call them Northers, to us Texuns, we've had enough!! I'm about to wear out my maters (tomatoes) out moving them in and out of the house. Last week, we had a Norther come blowing in at 45-MPH.... yesterday we had another come in at probably 35-MPH. The wind is about to blow me off this hill. Anyhow, it ain't funny any more.. Sheesh! At first I thought maybe it was payback 'cuz I said something nice about pig pork last week. I'm beginning to think it is some Northern jokester paying us back for our normally pleasant Spring-like weather,,,,Like I said, it ain't funny and we've had enough.. Thank you kindly. The Dougster
My step mother grows the most unbelievable plants in pots. Tomatoes by the ton, way better than what I get in my garden, and giant pots of herbs. I think you need to fertilize more often, because when you water, it eventually gets washed out of the pot, and you need to water more often because the pots get dry sooner. I tried putting tomato plants in big pots last year, used good stuff to put it in, but all I got was a lot of branches and about 5 tomato'es out of 7 plants. Put some in the ground and got same result. I know the ground is over used but what about the ones I put in pots? In all the years I have been planting I only had 1 tomatoe worm, ugh. George put it in a bag and set it on fire, yes he is a gentle man, yeah right. The thing blew up and went all over my son's shoes, he was about 2 at the time. Did you ever try to get a kushed up tomatoe worm off of shoes and shoestrings. It ain't easy. When I was doing it all I could say was eww, eww, eww. Yes, it started with Ben Franklin, and maybe it made sense in his time, but now, with all the electricity demands, it is dumb. The savings that occur with reduced lighting cost are exchanged for an increase in costs in air conditioning. Here are some articles - not the one I read, but along the same lines - http://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyphillipserb/2014/03/09/daylight-saving-time -extension-was-part-of-energy-tax-package-was-it-worth-it/ an Alabama representative who wants to end it in his state http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/03/12/daylight-saving-time-ye ar-round-alabama/6316219/ There was another article about a representative in Tennessee who wants to end it there also. Here is the study from Indiana that shows increased energy usage/costs http://www.nber.org/papers/w14429 Apparently each state can decide if they want to do it or not. I think Indiana was the state they did the study in to determine if daylight savings caused savings in energy. Apparently, some of the state does not or did not do daylight savings. On Pentrest I saw that someone had put a bag of growing soil in an old red wagon , cut the entire side out, and made drain holes, I'm sure...Planted leaf lettuce in it. Today I got a Pkg. of mixed leaf lettuce and mixed types of radishes, and will try that little trick. We have an old red wagon, not pull able, but still plant-able...The potting soil is on sale nearby. Prob plant it as soon as I can get the dirt. I don't mash up the asparagus in my Springtime Soup...Just cook cut up asparagus in buttered, salted water till tender...Use some of the broth ..cooled..to mix in flour...Add to pot then cook till slightly thick and eat...Oh yes, I add coffee creamer, seasoned salt....Yum! Grace That's my favorite, Asparagus soup, one time I had all this asparagus, and I was afraid it was going to spoil, so got out my cook books and found a good recipe, it was so good, now I make it at least a few time every year. I use my food processor to blend the asparagus after cooking it, I do let it cool a little before putting it in the processor. I am also afraid of burning myself, when pouring it in the processor, so I let it cool down some, the processor does a better job than the immersion blender, because I like the asparagus liquefied and blended, I chop off a little of the top of the cooked asparagus, and place that on the top of the soup when I serve it, I also like to serve it with oyster crackers, just my thing !! I think I am going to have to go buy some asparagus NOW, I want some soup !!!!! Our neighbor John across the street, built some growing boxes, to plant Vegetables in, he had some top soil delivered the other day, and now he's all ready to plant. I think my husband is jealous, he thinks of himself as the farmer in the neighborhood !!! They have one gallon Tomatoes plants on sale at Lowe's, but first we must empty the big planters we bought a few years ago, of the soil the tomatoes were in last year. we will put the used planting mix in a big pile on the side of the yard and use it for other plants, but not for tomatoes. I read a big article about how you never plant tomatoes in the same soil you did the year before, the roots of the tomatoes leave some little things in the ground that keeps the new plant from producing good tomatoes. So we always use new soil, or if you plant them in the ground, never plant them in the same place twice. I love to plant those cherry tomatoes, and when I am out watering, I eat them right off the plant, we never spray them with any chemicals, the only thing I do is go out early in the morning and look for those big tomato worms, remove them, they are so ugly !! Sully, This time change thing has been on and off a few different times. When I was really young we had it and then they stopped it. Several years ago it went back into effect. My kids were both born in the early 70's and they did not remember it when Indiana reinstated doing the change. I think it is easier when you are retired. Our Red Hat group has an old fashioned tea each spring and four of us act as hostesses. One of the gals is a great "trail boss" and the others are good followers. I made cream of asparagus soup for the first time today. My husband grew up in a family hit hard by the depression and soup was often the meal so he never wanted me to make it. I looked it up on Google, decided on the recipe that looked the easiest and with lower calories. My first attempt turned out really great. Now I have to triple the recipe and make it for next Sat. I miss my husbands height and strength and have to think ahead so I don't do something stupid like dumping it all over. I used my immersion blender and it did a great job, but I will probably have to divide the larger amount and blend it in batches. Oh how I miss the days when I didn't have to think ahead--but it's better than a nursing home. The snow we had Tues still hasn't fallen off the trees and bushes. It rained, froze, and then snowed so it's stuck. Stay warm. Grace On Thu, Mar 13, 2014 at 4:23 PM, Joyce Ragels <jragels@gmail.com> wrote: > Living in Arizona, I enjoy not having to leap or spring. Yes, I agree - the time change is weird. Why don't they just leave the clock alone. I read an article a while ago that said the reason for it is always said to be that the farmers wanted it. However, they discovered that is not true at all - in fact just the opposite! Also, as far as energy savings is concerned, it doesn't do anything either. I think there are some states that don't do it - Arizona maybe? I can't believe you are talking about plants. We won't be able to plant outside for a while yet. We still have snow on the ground here, but of course not as much as Grace I'm sure. Two years ago, I planted potatoes. Last year I never got to it, so hopefully I'll be able to do some this year. Our garden fence needs to be replaced on one side, so no planting until that's done, otherwise I'll just be feeding the local wildlife. We had two dead opossums here in the last 2 weeks. One in the garage that my husband apparently hit with the car and didn't know it, then we found another dead one in the yard two days ago - it didn't look injured - just dead. I gave my father some artichoke plants 2 years ago. First year they had 2 artichokes. Last year, none. But he called the other night to tell me they were sending up shoots, so maybe something will grow this year. Artichokes really don't grow here in New England, so it's kind of a novelty. I'll have to see if I can find some for myself this year. I managed to keep one plant each of rosemary & oregano over the winter inside, so they will be happy when I can move them out. Hawaii and Arizona are the only two states that do not change the clocks. I understood that the change was something to do with WW2 but in my old age forget what I learned in school. My flower gardens are buried under snow still, and the new snow today added a little more. The snow, wind and frigid temperatures made me stay inside today and try to plan my flower garden. The little bunnies ate many of the flowers last year so I want to get several Shepherds crooks to hang flowering pots from. Will plant ones the bunnies do not like in the ground. I may try a tomato and a pepper plants in big pots this year-two neighbors seem to have good luck with those. Does anyone know what the rabbits will not eat?? They ate all the mums and all the daisies last year. I wonder if we will even have Spring this year, I think we may go right into Summer! Right now the wind in just howling here in my little neighborhood-it is howling! Made potato soup with ham in it for a nice hot meal tonight-good on such a cold night. Have to get out and buy corned beef and cabbage to cook on Monday! Hope everyone is doing okay. Helen
Living in Arizona, I enjoy not having to leap or spring. However I still have to try and figure out what time it is everywhere else. So, it still affects me and my life. I am not use to the time change ether, I slept in till after 8:00 O'clock this morning, woke up a little groggy. I think I remember when we didn't get day light saving till sometime in April, or am I wrong ??? I appreciate the daylight in the evenings more in the summer than now, but maybe the people who work, like it now ??? We have a little overcast this morning, and it's a little cooler than yesterday, but we have to do some shopping today, so that's all right with me. Just got the flyer ad for Lowe's in this mornings paper, all kinds of good plants and things for the yard, I need some lights out in the garden, maybe the solar ones. Tried to get my husband to buy some clear small outdoor Christmas lights last December, thought they would look good up in a few of our smaller trees, in the back garden, but he nixed that, he said" (who would climb up in the tree and change the bulbs when they burned out)" I guess he's right, but would loved to have had a few twinkle lights out in a few trees, they would be fun and nice to watch till they died !!! I am always thinking of things to do that make no sense to my husband, I just like things to be fanciful sometimes, and I am thinking those clear Christmas light are so cheap, we could just throw them out when they got bad !!!! I have all kinds of thoughts for the garden, my husband thinks are stupid, I would love one of those big globes in the garden, his favorite saying to me is "YOU DON'T NEED THAT" I know I don't need that, but I want it, and it's my money too !!! Before he retired, he didn't care what I did to the garden, to the house, or where I went, except maybe date other men, as long as the house was fairly clean, a hot meal was on the table when he got home, and he had clean clothes for work the next day !!! I also love garden ART, small statues of cats or other animals, I have several planting pots, one shaped like a frog, a chicken, and a turtle. One of my children bought me a big planting pot that looks like a Spring basket, it's heavy, but looks so good with Ivy geraniums in it. I sometimes think my husband has lost all his dreams, he never sings in the shower anymore (I miss that) he doesn't laugh very much anymore ether. That was one of the first things that attracted me to him, he had a great laugh, and spent a lot of time making me laugh. But I will tell you this I have $350.00 in Birthday money saved, and in the next month or two, I am going to the plant Nursery and buy what ever strikes my fancy !!! I'll take our Explorer, and fill the back of it with all kinds of flowers and plants I want !!! I have spring fever really bad, and I feel it won't be going away anytime sooooooon !!!!! sully I am just green with envy. We had 5" of snow yesterday early and a lot of it melted , but it was 8 over night. Might get up to 35 today. Woopee! Then with day lights savings just thrown in, everyone I talk to just wants to rant! Oh well, this will pass and in the meantime there is nothing I can do about it. My cat just can't get used to the time change--I am doing things an hour off of her schedule and her majesty is not happy. Enjoy your wonderful weather.
