    3. Emma, glad to hear you are doing good, for not walking. Has your elec. wheel chair arrieved yet? We have had really warmer weather here. Except for today, cold wind. So this is going to be an inside day. Had the dog last week end, so worked outside alot and I thought I was going to die. Havn't done all that trimming for a while, putting in the back of the pickup was hard also. Kenneth did unload it for me and that was a chore for him. But it tired the dog and me both out so we were in bed early. Carol and Tim went to San Diego for family day on our grandsons ship. USS Kidd 100. They really enjoyed it. They went 12 miles out in the ocean, and did all kinds of things. Had lunch for every one. One thing I didn't know when they pass another ship and which ever captain has the highest rank the others that are on deck have to salute. The submarine had higher rank so the guys had to salute. They probably had that set up, don't know. Then towards the end of the day they had the honors ceremony, I think it was called, and Nathan re-enlisted. First they have to discharge you and then you sign back up for six more which will make the 20 for him and then he can retire.. He will only be around 41 I believe at that time. The captain presented a folder with a letter in it from the navy to Katey his wife and also one to Carol that had about supporting the husband up along the way in the decisions and alot of time spent alone. Of course this was Katey's and Carols was about the same except for the mother doing this. I told Carol they will never know will they, there was alot of decisions along the way raising him on her own until she remarried when he was around 10. He is so soft hearted, and he still calls her every week end if possible. She took alot of pictures out there. They saw the schools of porposis (sp). (boy that sp was awful.) For some reason since they worked on the computer I don't have spell check any more. Iwas surprised at the big wake they put out behind the ship. I guess it shouldn't have surprised me as just a motor boat can do that also. They saw a whale way out through a spy glass. It was really a day they both enjoyed. Katey's parents were able to be there also and a couple of Nathans friends. Now he will probably have shore duty for a while. We are hopeing for San Diego. Take care Emma Louise in sunny Ca. today ----- Original Message ----- From: "Emma Roses" <roses4831@msn.com> To: "memory-lane" <memory-lane@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 08, 2011 8:49 AM Subject: Re: [ML] Oregon > > We're having warm weather, up in the 50's during the day. His Mom is the only one alive out of six siblings from my dear mother in laws family and she is in an assisted living home . Thanks for answering. How are you doing these days? It is snowing here again-I do not remember a winter of so much snow and ice. Take care Helen

    3. Independence is a small town southwest of Salem (the capitol). It's more of a farming community. I've been thru there and maybe stopped for coffee but never shopped there. Back in 1959 (I think) Oregon had a reproduction of the Oregon trail with the covered wagons and everything. My BIL and I went to Independence to meet the wagon train when it got to the end of the trail.Emma > From: helenware@comcast.net > To: memory-lane@rootsweb.com; An_Internet_Family@yahoogroups.com > Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2011 22:56:29 -0500 > Subject: [ML] Oregon > > Just had news that a first cousin of my ex's passed away in Independence, Oregon--do any of the listers out there know where that is? > Always wanted to visit out there but never got there---this man's Mom is still alive in a home in Roseburg, Oregon. About 450 people began shoveling out Lambeau Field in Green Bay at 8:00 this morning ($8/hour) in preparation for the official celebration there tomorrow afternoon. There are several inches of snow predicted for today through tomorrow morning so I don't know when/how they'll clean that out. The celebration with the team will run for an hour (good thing, as it is going to be MIGHTY cold tomorrow- late afternoon air temperatures should be around 8 above zero. When combined with winds around 15 mph this will yield wind chills around 10 below zero). The tickets at $5 each, limit 20. They will probably be sold out. The stadium holds about 73,000 people. A portion of the proceeds will go to charity. If you can't make the event in Green Bay, major state TV stations will be broadcasting it live and then re-broadcasting it in prime time. ...juanita > I decided to watch the game after the first quarter had ended. 1. [ML] Happy memories...
    2. My memories took me back in time to the days when Mama made big bowls of wilted lettuce for my hard working Daddy..He LOVED it ! When he burned off the plant bed where he set out the scraggly sweet potatoes to make plants, he always burned off enough extra space so Mama could have a lettuce bed...She also planted lovely red radishes and spring onions....I'm sure Daddy kept a close eye on those little green sprouts, hungering for something green on the table to go with all those beans Mama cooked in that big black dinner kittle... One day he would come to the house smiling, toting a watering bucket just full of leafy lettuce and other things picked in the plant bed. Those greens had grown super fast in the rich black soil, and even the tender leaves of the radishes could be used, and there would be a bit of tender mustard greens...It didn't take long for Mama to fry up some bacon while Daddy was out by the well house washing up the greens....The bacon was put on the side after it was crumbled , and a bit of water was poured into the hot grease...We little'uns were warned away from the cabinet as Mama poured that hot grease all over that big panful of torn up greens...We didn't like it as well as Daddy did, but I'm sure each one ate their share. I make what I call ' Sissy ' wilted lettuce....Fry up some bacon and crumble when it cools..I pour most of the fat in the 'grease jar for later use, then mix in water, flour, salt and pepper and stir till it cooks thick. This is poured on the chopped lettuce, stirred in...and eaten fast....Not quite the same as my memories maybe, but MUCH better health wise..Since we don't have a plant bed I harvest my leafy lettuce at the local supermarket....Jeannie T ____________________________________________________________ When Banks Compete, You Win!
