    2. Such a nice letter! I'm sorry things didn't go in your favor re the homestead...Life is hard enough on us if we only have happy memories...When we've been treated badly it's hard to bear without terribly bitter feelings...I bet that homestead was a joy to behold...and am glad you have memories of it, and probably pictures too... I can't remember if I explained the ''glass winder' remark...My mountain born Mother in law was visiting and I told her I heard the Spring peepers over on the pond that 's in the nearby woods...It was supposed to turn cold later on and she said " They'll be looking through glass winders' before long..."{ ice } How I miss that dear lady. I fear disease is getting at Aunt Adeles pink hyacinths...few are growing this year. I think I'll start digging on the scanty side and very carefully keep digging till I get to live bulbs..see what's going on...I'd rather lose most any plant out there than those flowers whose ancestors have been blooming every Spring since about 1915 or so..I never met Adele, as she died when she was about 24 of Pellagra..which we now know is a vitamin deficiency....She was closest in age to my Mama. and they helped get each other ready each morning for school when youngsters....taking turns brushing and braiding each other hair and tying their belts..Remember when all little girls dresses had either belts that tied in the back or a loose ribbon belt ? ..Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Sun, 20 Feb 2011 13:03:25 -0600 "samuels" <dwsbgs@centurytel.net> writes: > Jeanie how gorgeous and wonderful. 3. My daughter is a teacher and she says there are a lot of kids that need that special attention. At one rural school she taught at, she said the principal said they needed socks for the kids. Evidently a lot of the kids came to school with no socks on and in the winter their feet would get pretty cold. I bought several packages of one-size-fits-all and the principal could hand them out as she saw fit.She still has kids like the girl you befriended. They move around a lot, or live in cars, or things like that. She's in another rural district now but I guess they're in every district. 3. Mentioning little girls belts brought back a memory. For Easter one year, I made my daughter a nice dress and got my boys all decked out to. There was a family that had two girls, around 8 and 10. I knew their parents couldn't afford to get them new Easter dresses so I proceeded to make them each a dress, nothing fancy but looked nice. For the younger girls belt for her dress, I bought a pretty ribbon that matched the dress. They were so pleased to get their dresses. About a month or so later, she came to me at church and said she had lost her 'belt" and could I get her another one. I wondered if I would have to keep supplying belts until she outgrew the dress but I bought her another belt and didn't say anything. I lost contact with that family for years, but later the older girl found us. She had married and had 3 little girls of her own and the younger girl had joined the Navy. They had their faults but they turned out pretty good, coming from the home they were in.Emma > To: dwsbgs@centurytel.net; memory-lane@rootsweb.com > Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2011 23:16:43 -0600 > From: askgranny@juno.com > Subject: Re: [ML] Spring's about to get 'ice winders'..... > ....She was closest in age to my Mama. and > they helped get each other ready each morning for school when > youngsters....taking turns brushing and braiding each other hair and > tying their belts..Remember when all little girls dresses had either > belts that tied in the back or a loose ribbon belt ? ..Jeannie T > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ri

After spending a wad of money(mine) and unable to get any form of control. I gave up. Grandmother had true English flower bed ,completely surrounding the house which sat on a full acre for the house yard. About three foot deep and everything grew for her plus she usually got the latest fad variety. How she managed it with the gardens and the housework and her projects , I simply don't know. 2. Old timey buttercups are blooming here and there in the flower beds, and some hybrid daffodils out front.......We're expecting a wave of cold air tonight , so put extra leaves on the pink hyacinth that is a descendent of some planted by Mamas sister that died in 1930.....Yes, I know hyacinths don't live very many years........Shhhhh ! Hoping 'Adele' is snuggled down so deeply in her leafy bed she won't hear me....Uncle Louis' purple ones are much more prolific......There was a cluster of each color on either side of the old brick sidewalk leading from the road to Ma's log house when I was growing up....After the house was torn down the yard was farmed just like the wonderfully fertile garden nearby and the fields all around.....The plow scattered Ma's flowers from A to Izzard..... We hadn't gone back to the old house place for several years after my Uncle sold it out of the family...just too sad...One Spring my sisters and I decided we would walk up the old dirt road to see the place...After picking our way through the muddy spots we came out in the wheat field alongside the road...I looked up to see if I could see the house yet and started laughing....Mamas few clumps of 'buttercups' had been scattered all over the hillside by the plow...and there were hundreds of them shining yellow through the short stalks of green wheat......How Mama would have laughed ! Other Spring flowers were scattered here and there and we dug up bulbs to bring home with us...{We had got permission before we went up there. } I figure Mama set out those daffodil bulbs around 1918....And the hyacinth bulbs about the same time....Probably dug them up at an old housplace soemwhere....I have several clumps of them here.....and they are spreading... Every year or so I try to go back up to Ma's place...fearing each time something had happened to the flowers .Last Spring I was sad to see most of the flowers had been killed...no till farming , probably. Luckily there are still plenty of flowers that are in places too wild to plow, and rafts of day lilies have wandered off down through the field in the little wet weather stream that cuts across there....Jeannie T ____________________________________________________________ $65/Hr Job - 25 Openings Part-Time job ($20-$65/hr). HUGS HUGS HUGS The Year: 1692 Rebecca Towne was baptized at Yarmouth, England, on February 21, 1621. She came to Salem, Massachusetts with her family in 1640. In about 1645, she married Francis Nurse, who was described as a tray maker. The making of trays and similar articles of domestic use was important employment in the remote countryside. [image: accused Salem witches]<http://www.iath.virginia.edu/salem/people/nursepics.html> The Towne Sisters Plaster statue depicting sisters Rebecca Towne Nurse, Mary Towne Easty, and Sarah Towne Cloyce, wearing shackles. Nurse and Easty were hanged, but Cloyce was later released. The statue is located in the Salem Wax Museum of Witches and Seafarers in Salem. Artist: Yiannis Stefinarkis, ca. 1970. In 1692, the "black cloud of the witchcraft delusion descended upon Salem Village." Rebecca Nurse was a 71-year-old invalid who had raised a family of eight children. Her family had been involved in several land disputes, which could have caused ill-feelings among some of the residents of Salem. Nevertheless, most of her contemporaries sympathized with her. The Accusation Soon after the first of the women had been accused of witchcraft, Rebecca Nurse discovered that her name had also been mentioned as a suspect. On March 23, a warrant was issued for her arrest upon the complaint of Edward and John Putnam – the Putnam family was among those that had been involved in land disputes with Rebecca and her husband. Rebecca stated that she was innocent, but was committed to the Salem jail. It was written of Nurse: This venerable lady, whose conversation and bearing were so truly saint-like, was an invalid of extremely delicate condition and appearance, the mother of a large family, embracing sons, daughters, grandchildren, and one or more great-grand children. She was a woman of piety, and simplicity of heart. That her reputation was virtually unblemished was evidenced by the fact that several of the most active accusers of others were hesitant in their accusations of Rebecca, and many who had kept silent during the proceedings against others, came forward and spoke out on Rebecca's behalf, despite the dangers of doing so. Thirty-nine of the most prominent members of the community signed a petition on Rebecca's behalf, and several others wrote individual petitions vouching for her innocence. One of the signers of the petition, Jonathan Putnam, had originally sworn out the complaint against her, but apparently had later changed his mind on the matter of her guilt. The Trial On June 29, 1692, Rebecca Nurse, Susannah Martin, Sarah Wildes, Sarah Good, and Elizabeth Howe were tried for witchcraft. During Rebecca's questioning, the magistrate showed signs of doubting her guilt, because of her age, character, appearance, and professions of innocence. But every time he began to waiver on the issue, someone else in the crowd would heatedly accuse her, or one of the afflicted girls would go into fits again. When she realized that the magistrate and the audience had sided with the afflicted girls, Rebecca replied, "I have got nobody to look to but God." She then tried to raise her hands, but the afflicted girls fell into dreadful fits at the motion. The Verdict On June 30, the jury came back with a verdict of Not Guilty. When this was announced, there was a large and hideous outcry from both the afflicted girls and the spectators. The magistrates urged the jury to reconsider, which wasn't uncommon in the seventeenth century. Chief Justice Stoughton asked the jury if they had understood the implications of something Nurse had said during her trial. Though it seems that none of the accused realized it at the time, no one who confessed to witchcraft was ever executed. They merely stated that they had dabbled in the black arts, promised never to do so again, and all was forgiven. These confessors often accused others of witchcraft, because the magistrates would then look upon them kindly and release them from prison. During Rebecca's trial, Abigail Hobbs had confessed to witchcraft and had testified that Rebecca was truly a witch. Nurse had said "What do you bring her? She is one of us," meaning that Hobbs was a fellow prisoner. Rebecca was partially hard of hearing, and exhausted from the day in court. When she was asked to explain her words, "she is one of us," she didn't hear the question. The jury took her silence as an indication of guilt. The jury deliberated a second time and came back with a verdict of Guilty. Rebecca's family immediately did what they could to rectify the mistake that had caused her to be condemned. She was granted a reprieve by Governor Phips, but when it was issued, the accusers began having renewed fits. The community saw these fits as conclusive proof of Nurse's guilt. On July 3, 1692, the Reverend Nicholas Noyes had Rebecca brought from her prison cell to the church she and her family attended. When she arrived, the Reverend excommunicated her before the congregation. Not until 1699 were members of the Nurse family welcomed back to communion at the church, and it was fifteen years later before the excommunication of Rebecca Nurse was revoked. The Execution On July 19, 1692, Rebecca Nurse, Susannah Martin, Elizabeth Howe, Sarah Good, and Sarah Wildes were hauled in a cart to Gallows Hill. On the gallows, Rebecca was "a model of Christian behavior." Legend says that at midnight Francis Nurse, his sons and sons-in-law found Rebecca's body in the common grave where it had been flung and carried it home for a proper burial. [image: Salem witch gravestone] <http://www.salemweb.com/memorial/> Public outrage at her conviction and execution has been credited with generating the first vocal opposition to the Salem witchcraft trials. In 1711, her family was compensated by the government for her wrongful death. Rebecca Nurse's story is well-known, and has been written in many historical and fictionalized accounts of the trials. She is a central character in Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible. The PBS film, Three Sovereigns For Sarah, depicts Nurse and her family members as main characters, and features Vanessa Redgrave as Sarah Cloyce – Rebecca Nurse's sister – who was imprisoned for more than a year, but was released after the witchcraft trials came to an end. -- Some people weave burlap into the fabric of our lives and some weave gold thread. Then a little box that said. Close program. I clicked it to close it.ind a reason for this to happen. Then i copied it all down. Had this happen a few weeks ago to but never got an answer if they found it. This program has a more useless mind then i do. When i use program's in control panel they rarely give me an answer. They usually just tell me they cannot find the problem. Now that sound's more like my mouth or a first grader not a highly sophiscated program like win7. Viola.

To make a long story short, I took the tire to town and had it fixed... by the time I got back home and got the tire back on, I was tired as all get out...wore plumb out! I popped a couple of naproxen sodium ( generic Alieve) and drove into Lometa for lunch... Luckily, Lometa is a small (tiny) town where they are accustomed to seeing hard working men sit down in the cafe for lunch. I looked like hell and felt even worse. By the time I had lunch and got back to the ranch, the pain meds had kicked in and I did get to spend some quality time on the tractor but somehow, the thrill was gone... At the moment, I am back home and after I take two more pain meds, I'm taking a shower and sit ... probably for the rest of the day. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. lol The Dougster :-)* http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mbousman1/memory.htm ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MEMORY-LANE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. [ML] A quiet day at the ranch...

    3. It's been cloudy most of the day but still quiet warm.. as planned, I drove the the ranch quite early this morning... had packed my truck with a bunch of tools and "stuff" to unload into the shop and then planned to spend the day with my tractor... OY! Did I spend the day with my tractor..weekend before last, I noticed the left front tire was a tad low so I drug out my compressor and checked the air in all four tires.. feeling quite proud of myself, I came home a happy camper.... Imagine my surprise this morning when I discovered a flat tire on my tractor.. no, not the one that was low... Grrrr Now, I gotta tell ya, this old fat man is in no condition to be changing tractor tires but unfortunately, there was no one else around to do it for me... I had driven it enough to have broken the seal around the rim. The tires had a bunch of goop inside to keep them from going flat... obviously the goop didn't work... not only did it not work but made a Holy mess.. slick, slimy black goop covered everything ... by the time I got the tire off and loaded in my truck, I was also covered in the *&&^%))_# mess....
