    3. My mother referred to these as "calabash cousins" -- I never quite knew what it meant, but don't you know Wikipedia has come through here: "In Hawaii a calabash is a large serving bowl. It is usually made from a hardwood, rather than from the Calabash Gourd as in Maroon cultures. It is used on a buffet table or in the middle of the dining table. The use of the calabash in Hawaii has led to terms like "Calabash Family" or "Calabash Cousins". It indicates that an extended family has grown up around shared meals and close friendships. Food is very important in modern Hawaiian culture. The expression "E komo mai - Come, let's eat" was the standard welcome to anyone approaching a home." Now, the first time I heard her say this was sometime she spent time in Hawaii with my brother and his wife (a native of Hawaii) -- so, I expect that's where she got it, rather than from her squash eating western ancesters <G>. However, that's the kind of relationship that gets referred to sometimes as 'shirttail kin'....especially if they actually know each other. Not related but have relatives in common (i.e., K). When my daughters were in school, they had a friend they referred to as a "cousin cousin", which was the same sort of relative. They and Emily weren't related, but they had first cousins in common. My girls were first cousins to Katie on Katie's dad's side; Emily was a first cousin to Katie on her mom's side. So Emily *felt* like family, but she wasn't by any definable relationship. --pig ===== If you would prefer digest mode to mail mode, drop a note to roots-admin@rootsweb.com and ask for the digest... ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ROOTS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. I have always been afraid of hogs. One look at that big mouth and all those teeth just bicycle the livin day lights out of me. When my two youngest daugters were still home but in high school. They were never afraid of any farm animals. Well Allen wanted to put a brood sow into a farrowing house one morning say tennish!! So he told us all were to stand and told us we need not be afraid because she was a gentle sow. Well he put me the furtherest away from the house. well when the sow came tearing down towards me like a flash i was gone my girls with me. But i beat both of them to the house by 25 feet or more. None of my kids would run a foot race with me nor would they indian wrestle but i had more expierence with it when i was young. You know i never had a bicycle till i was in my 30's and it was a mans racing bike but it was so tall i had to find some thing to stand on before i could get on the seat. Allen bought it for me at a sale and i sent it to Fargo with my daughter in law and sje sold it for 80.00. But first time i rode a bike it was a boys to. But at least i could get on it i just did not know how to steer or anything. The first thing i ran into was a big light pole then i hit the neighbors house then my neighbor took it away from me and i never questioned him. It was brand new birthday present from his parents. I was 10/11 then. Guess i was klutz when i was small. Worst thing i did was fall into the red river three times in same day. Same brother pulled me out every time. But some how or other i survived. Although my head has been hit and bumped into every thing imaginable so its strange i never had concussions or any thing from all the banging it got. But who knows that is probably my english problem today. Ta ta. Viola.

    3. Yes, Italian ones. They come in all flavors, and are baked twice, so they are hard. Great for dunking - you'ld love them. Nonni's is a brand that they sell in the regular grocery stores, so you don't have to go to a bakery to get them. 3. My mothers parents had no teeth at all and both were only partly grey. My grandmothers hair was straight as a stick but so long when it was braided she could set on the braid. But my grandma was the spicy one of the two. She is the native american on my moms side. She came here from Prince Albert, Sask. She had one son, his dad drowned on fishing trip. She met my granpa in Fargo, N.D who had came from Ogle County, IL. They had 8 children including my grandmas son. My grand pa made drinking stuff. one day a pretty new car came up the drive way and grandpa told his son Jess if he tipped his hat to tip over the mash barrell. Pretty soon grandpa tipped his hat and Jess dumped the mash. When the men left and grandpa came to the barn he got mad at his son for tipping the mash barrell. Jess said to his pa you told me if you tipped your hat to dump it and grandpa said to him yes bumping the mash was bad but getting all the hogs drunk was a worse mess they about ruined the barn. Then we think we got problems<VBG> Viola

Sent from my Nokia phone -----Original Message----- From: juanita Sent: 03/01/2011 5:20:15 PM Subject: Re: [ML] a day's work/retiring I retired a year before my husband and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. I left the house shortly after he went to work @ 7 AM and walked 3-5 mi. every day before noon. Then if the weather was really nice, I'd go another couple miles in the afternoon. I had all the hours enjoying the air, seeing friends, thinking and planning the days my husband would retire and all the things we could do together. This was in 1984 .... he retired in 1985 and we began researching our family history shortly thereafter. We traveled in our camper or van over 300,000 miles the next ten years....visiting all the places our ancestors had lived. One year we went from the central part of the US to Maine and Vermont and then back across the length of the country to southern California. Stopping at court houses, libraries, genealogy societies, newspaper offices and any place that looked interested, we compiled tons of information. The time we spent at home then was spent writing a book and researching via the US mail. I can honestly say we've never had a moment we didn't enjoy together.....even with inclement weather or disappointments that some things didn't turn out as planned. We thank God for our health and the ability to enjoy each day. I tell everyone to enjoy life ... the years fly by much too quickly. I'm thankful for every moment - the marriage my dad once told me would never last, will reach 70 years next year. We'd do it all over again. juanita > I hope you have many years of retirement...Hubby has been hanging > around bugging me full time for more than 10 years now.........and has > finally settled into getting enough' make work' to keep him fairly > busy....I had a horrible time getting used to not having any alone > time at all...and THAT still bothers me....I have my own room, so can > spend all the time I want to in here...Going to bed any old time, > getting up when I want , and lying down for a nap as Email truncated to 2,000 characters :::0:b90c394e726aceba1d5689f278644fbc:7d0::::

    3. We had exactly what you had the other night. The lighting was so scary. When I walked into the kitchen a bolt of lighting scared the heck out of me because it looked like it was right in my kitchen and it poured down really hard. I spent two weeks with my sister-in-law in Florida some years back and we were walking on the beach one day and it started to rain very hard. We got soaked a lot. It was so hard to believe that it started so fast and and poured from the beginning. She told me that is the way it always is. I went to Mass down there, and I have a habit of looking down at the floor (I don't know either) and when I raised my head every one was holding hands, I felt like an idiot. Well we got it during the night. The thunder sounded like a bomb going off and that set my dogs to barking. It came down in buckets but only for about ten minutes and then it stopped and started up again. It was as if we had three cloud bursts. The rest of the day was beautiful and the temperature was in the high 60's and sunny. My kind of day. I enjoy all kinds of tea----I have several teapots left from collecting them for years-but I gave most away! Every year when you make a donation to Public Television one of the gifts is going to a formal English tea at a hotel in Rhode Island on a Sunday afternoon--it is such fun to get all dressed up and enjoy the fancy fare.
