    3. Congrats to your son Louise. My grand nephew was into bands to and won awards. He lives in another state so I won't be able to hear him. My son was in a band for a couple of hours, he sang. I told him he didn't have a voice but he told me all you have to do is scream. 3. Well thank you!, He plays pedal steel and had always played country western, but big Moe wanted him in the blues band so he went with him. He also plays in the church band once a mo. Played alot of bars in the beginning in the country band. Another country band wants him, but he told them he just didn't have enough time. He works his regular job, they come out and help us, then there is practice, the country band was for part of the door, that just doesn't get it. Then there is work at his house, although his wife does alot of it so he doesn't have to, then there is fishing, can't leave that out. If the creeks slow down enough to be able to fish them with all the high water. They play at th Fire on the Mountain festival in Sanora, Ca. some time in the summer, forget, then in July they are playing at a blues thing in Taho, Nv. I know there are a few others already booked, just can't remember them. He isn't a young fellow any more, heading towards 60, so don't have the energy that was there in his young days. If he didn't have to work a regular job it would be different. He sings some also. But his isn't the screaming kind. best wishes to your grand nephew. It is fun, I wouldn't have the nerve myself. 3. Yes, I had 2 topsy-turvies last year. They were great, I enjoyed them very much. The biggest problem is you don't want the plant to get too heavy with either tomatoes or the vine itself. It can cause them to break off. What I liked is it didn't attract all the icky bugs and creepy crawly things (how's that for scientific terminology?) that like to eat your tomatoes. In California, you should get a bumper crop! Here in Washington state, we're having such a cool spring, I'm guessing it will also be a cool summer, I don't expect much luck with them. 3. I've not grown any tomatoes in the upside down planters....nor tried after I saw what happened to a couple of them that a lady in our apartment house planted. She had her brother-in-law erect an upright holder for her with an arm across the top. She bought two of the planters and hung one on ea. side of the arm. The tomatoes soon sprouted and started to come out the bottom of the planters but it wasn't long before the stems of the plants started curling upward - toward the sun. Each week the tomatoes grew upward toward the sun....about the only fruit produced were a few scrawny tomatoes hardly fit to pick. The planters hung there all summer long and on into the winter. By this Spring they were just a piece of torn green plastic, hanging by shreds. I rather doubt she'll replace them this year. I don't know if anyone can grow large red tomatoes that resemble the ads or not. They cost too much for no more return....I can go to a roadside sale and buy them from a farmer. Our Spring weather has gone from one extreme to the other. A week or more ago we broke an 1895 high temperature when it got to 100 degs. A few days later we were 50 degrees cooler with cold northern wind. We need rain badly. juanita ks juanita > Has any one grown the tomato plant in the topsy turvey planter, the > one where the plant is gowing upside down. 3. Yup, you can grow just any old tomato in those things... Good luck! Enjoying retirement? HA! Louise, we have been so busy with an assortment of projects I simply haven't had much time to write to the group. For the longest we were building a chicken coop... bought chicks and spent a little bit of time getting them into their teens. Bought seventeen chicks figuring we'd lose some of them. Nope.. we still have seventeen chickens and they are doing great... They are about half-grown now and we have begun opening the door to the coop and letting them roam. Usually I am up and outside first so I open the door for them and they are so eager to get out that when I open the door, they literally come flying out. They spend the day wandering the yard and when something scares them they head back to the coop. Each day they get a little more brave and wander further away from the coop. At the end of the day they return to the coop to be locked in for the night. Hopefully in a few more weeks they should start laying. We'll be wondering what to do with all the eggs then. We have at least three roosters and possibly four, so at some time we'll have to start thinking about chicken and dumplings. We're guessing one rooster will do. We've also spent a lot of time making repairs to the small house the hunters use. They have offered to paint it for us so we jumped at that offer. They painted it just over a week ago and it really looks nice although we'll have to get down there for some scraping and re-painting as well as paint the door and trim. I've got the County Agent coming out tomorrow to give us some ideas about what to do to improve the property. It's always a good ideas to get another perspective. When things slow down, I must start spraying our prickly pear. I've just gotten a license to buy the necessary chemicals and the cactus ain't going away without some help from me.. All those things will keep me busy until end of summer and beyond.... Never a dull moment. lol The Dougster :-)* On Mon, May 16, 2011 at 4:13 PM, Louise Valine <antique1931@saber.net>wrote: > Has any one grown the tomato plant in the topsy turvey planter, the one > where the plant is gowing upside down. > I was given one and can you grow regular size tomatos in them or have to be > the small ones? 3. Has any one grown the tomato plant in the topsy turvey planter, the one where the plant is gowing upside down. I was given one and can you grow regular size tomatos in them or have to be the small ones? Just wondering how much luck you have had with them. Figure I can ask at the plant place, but thought some thoughts from the gang would be apreciated. The garden place is going to tell you only good stuff. Doug, where have you been? You sure must be enjoying this retirement or you are just tired. We have had such strange weather. Last week really nice and worked out side, now this is different. We just had not really hard wind, and some rain, but in Chico yesterday about 10 miles from us they had hail, rain, strong wind, and snow in the foot hills. Now this afternoon they are saying another storm coming in on the west side of the valley where we are. Strong winds, hail and thunderstorms. In Chico they were having their music festival and it was going to be out side. Well that didn't happen it got moved inside. It was supposed to start about the time all the hail and lightning was going on. Our son was playing with the Big Moe and the Blue Moon band. They won again for the best Blues band. There is no money involved just a chance to be heard and get gigs. Hopefully. ;Hope none of you are in the way of all the flooding in the south. Really makes you wonder what the world is coming to these days. But figures if it is a really hard winter up north all the melting snow has to go some place. Just to bad people have to get flooded out in order to save the larger towns down stream. Our prayers are with all of them. Take care out there Louise

HUGS HUGS HUGS Some of you all might enjoy this bit of humor Jeane ** For all you Texans, and former Texans, you need to start praying for the state. Look below to see how bad the drought has become. HOW DRY IS IT IN TEXAS ? It's so dry in Texas that the Baptists are starting to baptize by sprinkling, the Methodists are using wet-wipes, the Presbyterians are giving out rain-checks, and the Catholics are praying for the wine to turn back into water. Now THAT's Dry -- Some people weave burlap into the fabric of our lives and some weave gold thread. Both contribute to make the whole picture beautiful and unique. 3. That sounds sooooo good. I never could make a good wilted lettuce, I always got too much vinegar or not enough of something. Mama and my sister in law could make good wilted lettuce though. Now I don;t cook so guess I'll never get it any more. I'm sure they would never make it here where I live now.Emma > To: MEMORY-LANE-L@rootsweb.com > Date: Mon, 16 May 2011 01:45:01 -0500 > From: askgranny@juno.com > Subject: [ML] It's time for Wilted lettuce.... > > Yes folks, I had a great big bowl of wilted lettuce for lunch! 2. Yes folks, I had a great big bowl of wilted lettuce for lunch! Went outside to see if I could find some flowers to replace the Iris I threw out and came back from the garden with a big pile of leaf lettuce, green onions and radishes ! Plus a strawberry or two and a big long seed stalk off the Elephant garlic ...and an asparagus spear or two...Bacon.....hmnn.....YES ! Cooked a whole package of bacon....only swiping one piece, so doing good.... I washed all the veggies good and chopped them up..radish leaves and all since they grew so fast...AND because I remember Mama saying Daddy liked the spiciness of the leaves....I poured all the grease in the cooking jar except maybe a teaspoonful or two and dumped in water, vinegar, sugar and seasoned salt.....Then flour to thicken it...Hubby was on his computer till I mentioned wilted lettuce then he was off in a hurry....My oh my, first wilted lettuce we'd had in a long time.... I can remember Mama fixing it for Daddy when I was about 7 years old , while he was busy getting the fields ready to plant. Folks back then were starved for something fresh and green in the Spring after a winter of eating dried beans and canned stuff from last years truck gardens...When we told him Mama was making him some wilted lettuce he didn't waste any time turning the horses into the feed lot...We always stood around and watched them roll in the dust....they seemed so awkward and we would laugh if they couldn't roll all the way over....By the time this innocent amusement lost it's savor and the horses were drinking at the little pond Daddy was already well on his way to the house... Sometimes in the Spring Mama would have white beans cooked long and slow on the back of the old wood cook stove and a big pone of cornbread, of course....If we were lucky she would've made a pot of English peas and dumplings, and of course ripe tomato relish to go with the beans...After eating all he could hold Daddy would go out under the shade tree and turn a straight backed chair over so he'd have a back rest...He'd lay there talking to us kids till the horses had rested, then he would go off down the woods road, walking to the field instead of riding ...I never saw him ride the horses to or from a field....There would be no replacing them if one got broke down, you see......us kids would return to our everyday pursuits, full of beans and happy to be alive....Jeannie T ____________________________________________________________ Penny Stock Jumping 3000% Sign up to the #1 voted penny stock newsletter for free today! http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3141/4dd0c8b0162571e00fm06duc

    1. Re: [ML] Growing a Yam
    2. Why don't you plant a yam or two ? Just wait till it's 6 or so inches tall, skin it off the tuber and set it out...keep watered. It will sprout roots up and down the stalk. We used to grow LOTS of them and Dad made a plant bed...We just pulled the plants off the old potatoes...I always find a sprouted one during the late summer seems like and plant it in flower pots that have lost their' tenants' . They make a real pretty vine and sometimes small sweet potatoes before frost....Nice bushy vines... I've grown yam's in a jar of water..and it's great for kiddoes to see..also have cut off the top of a sprouting carrot and put it in a shallow can lid of water...It'll grow a pretty bushy top...When onions sprout in warm weather I set them in dirt and can cut off green tops for a long time.....Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Fri, 13 May 2011 13:38:25 -0700 Shirley Sullivan <sullysoil66@msn.com> writes: > > I found a Yam I had forgotten about, there were really two, but one > turn rotten.
