    3. Speaking of chickens::::: When i raised them when we lived in the woods and our land bordered the National Wild Life Refuge i done nothing but run off birds and animals. The 0furious i hated the worst were skunk and eagles!!! Oh the hate i had for them. But still i knew every thing has to eat and i moved in to their territory!!! But some one told me to put CD's high up in the trees and any little wind it seemed the breeze would cause them to move and it scared the birds away.*So one day when my family was home i gave my grand children ca 2 and a half dozen of them and told them to get them in to the big trees. We never had any wind just a breeze so that took care of that. Then my brother brought us a black lab pup, not to young but not very old either but he got rid of the skunks. Then the dog started killing chickens!! I was ready to pull my hair out and i tried every trick i knew and it was many but i could not break him. You see he did not eat them he played with them but chickens have weak hearts. Finally one day i told my son to get me some bailing wire from the tool shed wound some wire around him then told my son to b*ring me the dead chicken. I wrapped so much wire around that chicken and dog my 10 yr old son said ma, is pal going to be able to walk so i quit. Left him in that wire for nearlly two weeks and when i was cutting the wire off him you could barely breath. But that dog ran when a chicken got to close to him. Ca two weeks later chickens would walk on him. All the while i was thinking good job Viola till the day my neighbor man laughed at me. But then i was furious d never seen him do one thing at his home. His wife and kids done every thing while he drank. They even had to open his bottles!! I literally tore in to him, i told him things about him self he did not know about till i told him. Any way when i got done i went in to my home and waited for the sheiriff to come for me. But the net day his wife told me he came home and went right to bed and that he sever said boo, well good for me on that but it is not a good idea. Viola.

    3. I have always wanted to raise chickens, but we're not allowed to raise poultry on our property, city law. We live below some foothills, I hear rosters crowing if I get up early, some where up in those foothills, they also have a lot of horses up there. I saw a Lama in a yard, when I was driving over the hill, so the people must be able to raise what ever animals they want. The only thing is if a wild fire comes through there as it has in the past, I would live in fear of fire all the time, and how to get all the animals out if a fire was coming. I was watching Martha Stewart one day, and she raises chickens, for the eggs mostly. She has planted climbing roses on the chicken wire all around her chicken cage. It looked real pretty, and the chickens didn't seem to care one way or another. I must be just a old farmer at heart, because I love the country, plants, especially trees, I love to grow food, tomatoes, corn, green beans, squash, peas, chilies, almost any vegetable that will grow for me, we have at least twelve fruit trees, and I want more. Nothing like reaching up and picking a apple out of a tree, and taking a bit out of it. We are still eating avocados, and most of our fruit trees are in bloom, I saw tiny little apples on the Gala apple tree yesterday. We have had so much rain this year, that all of out fruit trees are going crazy with leaves and blooms, hope that means we will have a great harvest this year. We have planted our tomatoes, just three varieties this year, Big Boy, Roma, and one cherry tomato. Those are the only one that seem to give us a lot of fruit, I canned tomatoes one year we had so many tomatoes. I love to go out and water the tomatoes, and if there are some cherry tomatoes that are ripe, I pop one or two in my mouth while I am out there, taste so good right off the vine. Hope all of your are healty, and looking forward to a nice summer, Sully

    3. That is what I figure. I will be 80 in July, I work outside alot and enjoy outside. Sometimes I remember the sun screen and some times I don't. we used to water ski, came from the time when sun tans were really the thing. All day on the lake got you pretty good, never sun burned. But I am paying for it now with the pre cancer things that have to be taken off. I also have wrinkles, I figure after four children three really close, now grandchildren and great grandchildren I enjoy every wrinkle I have. I don't care almost 80 if you have really smooth white skin they figure you must have had something done. Nothing against any one that has the whiter skin, some people do and don't wrinkle and that is good. Wish I had that but have to take what I was born with. Some people are worse than I am and some people are not. My Dr. says I don't look my age, so that is good. Of course I don't think he had his glasses on.Ha. I know the Ca. sun can do a number on you when it gets into the hot summer. I wonder if that lady had any other children? There is something wrong with people that live there lives through their children. Gotta go to town, better put on the sun screen. Sun is finally coming out after rain. and rain. 3. We see an occasional fox and hear coyotes on occasion but to date have not had a problem with any of them... A neighbor about a mile away reports that they have had problems with owls and hawks and that why they began raising larger chickens (Giant Bramhas), which has solved their problem. We only feed the chickens inside the coop early morning and late in the day when we pen them up. While we don't have any heavy wooded areas near the house I feel that is why we haven't had a problem (yet).... Time will tell. Our rabbit population is higher than it's ever been, which suggests fewer coyotes. We'll also see how long that lasts. lol :-)** On Tue, May 17, 2011 at 11:53 PM, <askgranny@juno.com> wrote: > Since you have that much land , most saved for hunters, I'm amazed you > don't have foxes and coyotes running around..Hawks ?
