    3. I don't know about your hummingbird feeder Louise but, I have had a wicker basket that's shaped like a watering can hung high on my house just under an overhang that I have enjoyed watching birds nest in for at least 7 years. Just plain little sparrows but fun. This year they were besieged by a larger bird looking for eggs and last week they were finally left alone to rebuild. Well, Sunday a nearly bald squirrel, yes I said BALD, moved in and brought one of her babies whom I believe she is trying to ween and these poor sparrows have had to go elsewhere. I am just so mad. I saw the bald squirrel last Fall and I was sure she would die over the winter cause it gets mighty cold here in Michigan but she survived and moved into that nest I guess cause it is much warmer after the birds rebuilt it so many times. Oh well, guess I better just let nature take it's course. 3. My father had some banty chickens in the back yard. He built a nice little coop for them and they roamed around the yard. There was a rooster among them, and that rooster would attack me when I went out there. My husband and I had a mini dachshund named Fritz, who normally loved all people and all other animals except for a possum, which is another story. We had to leave him with my father for a little while (a couple of months) because we were temporarily renting an apartment in California, while our house was for sale in Oregon. Well, one day Fritz got the bright idea to take on the chickens, and he skinned one. And he was so proud. So he had to move out, and he moved in with my husband's sister for a couple more months until we could rent a house. 3. Oh no, I couldn't possibly have my own garden now. For one thing, I can hardly bend over to pick something up off the floor; I'm afraid of losing my balance. Then, I can't get on my knees either. They don't support me anymore. If I fall, they call the fire dept to help me up. I guess they don't help you up here because of insurance problems. But, I keep dreaming about gardening.Emma > From: antique1931@saber.net > To: memory-lane@rootsweb.com > Date: Thu, 19 May 2011 08:49:34 -0700 > Subject: Re: [ML] Chickens > > Do you think you could still get down there in that dirt? 3. We have certainly been enjoying watching our chickens and will soon put some hay in the nest boxes for those that feel like nesting. It's a bit early for them to begin laying, so we'll see how soon they start earning their keep. Something interesting began yesterday. While watching them roam freely, we noticed one og the Wyandots (sp?) seemed to wander far away from the rest of the flock. When she'd get close to the others, they'd seem to gang up on her and begin pecking her. When we put them in the coop for the night, she was attacked repeatedly. Difficult to understand that. Dont let this die!!! Keep it moving. Not many still alive. I'm sure you will find this worthy ... They are trying to get 50000 views before Memorial Day. It is pretty poignant and is one of Seth's projects. Kindly forward so more can view it. You need to view the whole thing to be counted. Seth has been working on a full-length feature documentary about a program to honor WWII vets and has now released a trailer, and it would really help out if you watched it in full, and spread it around to other folks who would enjoy it. Working on this has been a very emotional experience, because the story is so, so powerful. I think you'll agree. http://media.causes.com/1060527?p_id=175378540 Remember the saying: If you are reading this -- thank a teacher; if you are reading it in English -- thank a Veteran.

    3. After seeing my parents raise chickens, I never wanted to raise any of my own. Too many problems. We did raise our own beef once. But, I did like having my own garden. One place we lived in Portland, we had a large garden. I canned a lot from that garden. On that place we had some apple and cherry trees, My kids were a lot younger and I tried to can as much food as I could. I wish I could still have a big garden. I miss not getting my hands in the dirt.Emma > From: sullysoil66@msn.com > To: memory-lane@rootsweb.com; roses4831@msn.com; ddcrim@gmail.com > Date: Wed, 18 May 2011 11:58:00 -0700 > Subject: [ML] Chickens > I have always wanted to raise chickens, but we're not allowed to raise poultry on our property, city law. We live below some foothills, I hear rosters crowing if I get up early, some where up in those foothills, they also have a lot of horses up there. I saw a Lama in a yard, when I was driving over the hill, so the people must be able to raise what ever animals they want. The only thing is if a wild fire comes through there as it has in the past, I would live in fear of fire all the time, and how to get all the animals out if a fire was coming. > > I was watching Martha Stewart one day, and she raises chickens, for the eggs mostly. She has planted climbing roses on the chicken wire all around her chicken cage. It looked real pretty, and the chickens didn't seem to care one way or another. I must be just a old farmer at heart, because I love the country, plants, especially trees, I love to grow food, tomatoes, corn, green beans, squash, peas, chilies, almost any vegetable that will grow for me, we have at least twelve fruit trees, and I want more. Nothing like reaching up and picking a apple out of a tree, and taking a bit out of it. We are still eating avocados, and most of our fruit trees are in bloom, I saw tiny little apples on the Gala apple tree yesterday. We have had so much rain this year, that all of out fruit trees are going crazy with leaves and blooms, hope that means we will have a great harvest this year. > We have planted our tomatoes, just three varieties this year, Big Boy, Roma, and one cherry tomato. Those are the only one that seem to give us a lot of fruit, I canned tomatoes one year we had so many tomatoes. I love to go out and water the tomatoes, and if there are some cherry tomatoes that are ripe, I pop one or two in my mouth while I am out there, taste so good right off the vine. > > Hope all of your are healty, and looking forward to a nice summer, Sully > > > > > > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mbousman1/memory.htm > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MEMORY-LANE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. I have house finches here that are regular visitors to my hummingbird feeder. If they get a good grip on the small flowers that surround the feeding hole they can drink for 10-15 seconds. Sparrows try but they can't seem to get the "hang" of it. I occasionally have to chase a woodpecker off of the feeder. There are some small warblers around but I haven't seen any of them at the feeder. Another regular visitor is a verdin. That's a very small gray bird, similar to a bushtit, but with a yellowish cap and rufous shoulder patch seen in adult birds.
