Yep..In the winter Mama cooked a big skillet full of scraps, etc. and we'd take it to the hen house and set it down... steaming in the cold air...She'd mix in any sort of leftovers...which wasn't much with 9 kids getting there first...It always looked disgusting to me so I didn't really notice much of what was in it....I HAVE read in old timey books that hog food was cooked as a regular thing , and folks used to chop up turnips/mangels to feed critters..maybe just in the winter...Mom put some chicken feed, oatmeal, cornmeal..something else in there...Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Sat, 21 May 2011 07:31:56 -0500 Doug Crim <ddcrim@gmail.com> writes: > Your mother cooked her vegetable scraps for chickens?? > > ____________________________________________________________ Penny Stock Jumping 3000% Sign up to the #1 voted penny stock newsletter for free today! http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3141/4dd898836587325733m06duc

When I was a young child in the Great Depression, we lived on a small acreage outside the city limits. Our neighbors as well as my family had large vegetable gardens and a few chickens and cows. No one necessarily was hungry as we grew most of what we ate. Just about a half mile south of our house were the railroad tracks and trains went by several times each day. It was an area where hobos liked to camp out, or gypsies sometimes set up an overnight campsite with their horses and wagons. Invariably when we saw a group gathering by the tracks in the dusk of evening, we knew we'd have "visitors". No one bothered anything around the house but we did have a person or two come to the back door asking for any left over food. They took any thing but usually said they'd like to have any potato peelings. They concocted a big kettle of soup they cooked over a wood fire on the ground by their campsite. They said the peelings were so good and always asked for them although they accepted any food people gave them. The next morning the group would move on down the road - or the hoboes caught a freight car going on south. All the peelings or scraps we had usually went into the "slop" the hogs were fed. They thrived on it. juanita > I have heard since I was young that the skins on a baked potato were > very healthy. That is why I eat skin and all. I have heard since I was young that the skins on a baked potato were very healthy. That is why I eat skin and all. I also eat the skin on a sweet potato. Not real fond of mashed potatoes with the peels on. That may come from learning to peel potatoes under the watchful eyes of mom and grandma. You could not have any little brown spots but neither should you have thick peels. I have never seen the use of throwing something away that is edible. I get irritated when someone peels an onion and throws away half the onion instead of taking the time to just peel off the dead skin. Back when I use to make big pots of vegetable soup, I would save the juice/water off canned vegetables to go in my soup. Kept a jar in the fridge for just that purpose. I would also use my potato water in mashed potatoes, soup, gravy and so on. Waste not want not was the motto I was raised by. Odd thing, except in the Spring when Mama scraped the freshly scrabbled potatoes she always peeled them and cooked the peels up in her skillet of chicken scraps ..Now days, when folks spend their money as fast as they git it and sometimes faster they eat baked potato shells, French fries cut up with the peel on, and even potatoes mashed with peels on..or baked potatoes, peels and all... We always cut both ends of the tomato off when prepping them, now nobody bothers...I think it is mainly pure de old laziness, but must admit it saves more veggie .. When I open a can of vegetables like corn or carrots I pour the juice off them before warming them in a little butter...Tastes pretty good, saves money..I understand you can't do this if you are on a low salt diet..I'm not. I guess I have a lot of money saving tips in the kitchen, just do them without thinking...Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Fri, 20 May 2011 16:49:27 -0500 Viola Seward <lolav@arvig.net> writes: > Yo Jeannie. Yo Jeannie. Back then we were so poor we about boiled the potato peelings for supper. But we couldnt because our dog who killed the chickens got them. Then i made gravy to give them some taste. I was very good to my animals except when i was trying to teach them some thing. Funny thing about that dog he loved me more then he like his master my brother. Because one time my brother beat him for tearing up news papers in my living room. So for Fritz whipping him the dog bit him!! Oh that one is a long story so will skip that one!! But i love animals but very rarely do i touch them or let them touch me because i have such a hate for fur of any kind that when i buy a coat and there is fake for on the hood it is gone fast. Viola
Speaking of birds we have a feeder just out side our back window and it is the only window that is open to see out side except in the kitchen. So far we have had Robins, Sparrows, Finches, Baltimore Orioles, Black Birds, Blue Jays with one Crow!! But we also have a small bird i do not recognize!! Hope i can tell you what it looks like!! It has a Yellow Breast with a black and red spot around its ears. I quit right here because i wrote it down but cannot find it now!! But this i know for a fact. I thought all birds only had one partner but found out that the male Black Bird comes early and builds up a nesting area with ca 4 to 5 nests. Then when the females come they pick the nesting place they like and the male gets 3 to 5 females as partners. I did not know this till i read it in the news paper last week. I will send in the descripcion of that bird when i find it. Viola.
Wrinkles??? Same here. One day we got a new nurse at my doctors office, she looked at me and asked if there was a mistake on my birth date. Not that i know of and i said 2 8 1935, she started banging her fore head on the desk and i got scared. I thought she had lost her mind. But pretty soon she quit ,looked at me and said 'God i hope i look as good as you do when i get your age'. I have always been ashamed when some one compliments me. One time an old boy friend came to visit us and stayed for supper, which was stated before he got there. Any way i had made a loaf of home made bread and when he bit into that his face turned different and i was instantly scared. I thought i made a mistake in it. Soon as he swallowed it he said this is very good bread did you make it? I said i did not think it was so good but he kept insisting and finally my brother said 'Ole is the best cook and baker in the area but she cannot handle complements'. Also either my best woman friend or my sister in law told my youngest daughter that when she brought her babies to my house she was not afraid to let them eat on my floors they were so clean. But they never told me that because they knew better. I have a good reason for being so good at what ever i done. My very first job after baby sitting since i was 7 yrs old was cleaning!! We had a man and wife who were our neighbors and he was an inventor of a piece of farm machinery. Any way his wife hired me to clean her house which was only 5 rooms. Kitchen, Living Room, Tea Room and 2 bedrooms of wich i cleaned all but i bedroom. Just dusted that one but changed the sheets once a month. But i learned to mop a floor properly!!! I mopped it 5 times before i got it right!! I made $1;00 or $2;00 dollars a week for this and i thought i was rich. But i have never been able to accept a complement and i do not know why!! But i think i have many wrinkles and yes Jeeane i earned every one of them also!!! Viola.
A pecking order has been established but it's hard to understand why just that one hen... actually, it's sad to watch. As a matter of self-preservation, she keeps away from the other chickens when they are free to roam. When we penned them up last night, she went to a nest in an effort to avoid getting pecked. This was after Sherry fed them. She choose not to feed with the rest. I asked Sherry to go ahead and feed her separately and all was well. We aren't set up to keep her separate other than leave her in the coop while the others are allowed to roam. I find this remarkable. Like I said, it's sad to watch. The plan for this weekend is to get a bale of hay to put in the nest boxes. They are too young to start laying but I agree that we might as well let them get accustomed to using the nest boxes. :-)* On Thu, May 19, 2011 at 11:50 PM, <askgranny@juno.com> wrote: > Why not put hay in the nests now so they'll know it's there when they > start looking for a nice place to lay eggs ? If they get a good grip on the small flowers that surround the feeding hole they can drink for 10-15 seconds. Sparrows try but they can't seem to get the "hang" of it. I occasionally have to chase a woodpecker off of the feeder. There are some small warblers around but I haven't seen any of them at the feeder. Another regular visitor is a verdin. That's a very small gray bird, similar to a bushtit, but with a yellowish cap and rufous shoulder patch seen in adult birds.
