There were cut out paper dolls in the Chicago Tribune comic section every week and my sister and I had to take turns getting them. They lasted much longer if put on very thin cardboard. There was Brenda Starr, Perry Winkles sister, The dragon Lady, and a lot of others I forget. We kept them in a shoe box and played school, going shopping, and lots more with them. Life was simple then and kids lives were much less hectic. Grace On Wed, Mar 20, 2013 at 10:02 PM, Jerrian <[email protected]>wrote: > You know what, Louise? I agree with you. I remember my mother disliked them and I never saw one for years. They even show them in Vermont Country store now. On a trip by car to Florida we saw them for sale in almost every yard. Our parents shaped our thingking back in the 30's and 40's so much more than they do now. We didn't have a phone until the 40's, she didn't drive, and my circle of friends was small. We used quilts my grandmother had made or flannel sheets. Oh how I loved it when my mohter put those on in the fall. Freezing in Chicagoland. Coldest St Pat's day in 30 years--a high of 23 on the first day of Spring, and no relief in sight. The few robins I see are having a hard time finding bugs. Thinking about male paper dolls, I remember I had a set of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans at one time, not sure if there were others or not. I kept my paper dolls in a big shoe box and always in order. Sometimes I also glued them onto a heavier backing. They were my pride and joy and I had them until I was in my teens. Then one spring mom decided I was too old for them and they had to go. I gave them to a younger cousin. I was so upset when I went to her house and they were just scattered everywhere. My mother was not a collector! Thinking of the sets I had brings up a name no one in the younger generations would even know - Betty Grable. I think there were paper dolls in McCalls but it could have been Good Housekeeping. Aunt Cora would save her magazines for me to cut out the dolls when I spent time with her each summer. Missie has saved some of her paper dolls plus has some boxed sets of Gingham Girls that have never been opened. Lexie played with paper dolls but not as much as either Missie or I. But then thats been a few years ago. I think both Missie and I made ones from catalogs from time to time. Now they do it online. I remember paper dolls very well and I especially remember Betty Grable. There used to be paper dolls in the back of one of the women/home magazines into the 1960's. I can't remember which magazine - Better Homes & Gardens? Woman's Day? Family Circle? I treat myself as often as possible. My youngest sister had the right idea. Spend your money on things you want. Don't leave it for someone else to spend after you are gone. Thanks for sharing this. Good to hear from you Robert, I have had that tread mill test, boy was I out of breath when it was over. That's most of our outings lately, except for grocery buying, tests, tests, and more tests. I told my doctor last time I was in there, I will have no more invasive tests, unless there's a real reason why I need them. Our health insurance is so bad at paying the doctors bills now, that I also told my doctor I will not have full blood tests every three months, only once or twice a year so he will renew my medications. We pay close to eight thousand dollars a year for health insurance, with medicare, and a second policy through my husbands union, and it still isn't enough. We paid less for health Insurance five years ago, and we never paid out of our pocket. Now it's a $20.00 co-pay, and we always end up paying something the insurance won't pay. Makes me so mad the games these insurance Co. play, they just make excuses for all the mistakes they make, and also they kept sending one doctors bill back saying they sent it to the wrong address, but no matter where they sent it, it kept coming back. After they told us what was going on, my husband took it down to the union hall, and gave it to the big guy to hand to the Insurance Co. Anyway we going out this morning to do some much needed grocery shopping, than over to the sister-in-laws, to do a little chore for them. They seem to be doing good, they are very brave women to still be living with so little help, I guess their independence is important to them. Sully, in cold California
I played with paper dolls for years. My uncle was stationed in Belgium during WW2. He sent me a box of French paper dolls-they were very sturdy heavy weight cardboard or gypsum. There were three dolls ,a redhead, blonde and brunette-they all had different length hair and features-they were beautiful-pages of clothing came with and made of nice heavy paper, easy to cut out and use. My favorite was Mimi-she had dark hair, kind of a pixie cut, my grandmother gave me a special drawer in her sideboard to keep my stuff in(being one of eight children)so my siblings would not ruin the stuff. I would play with the paper dolls on my grandmothers dining room table for hours and would try to draw and color new outfits for them-some came out pretty good! I spent years with these same three paper dolls--wonderful memories!!!

I can remember when we lived in Arkansas, the Sunday "funnies" (nowadays they are called comics) pages always had paper dolls with clothes, printed on the last page. My three sisters would always take that page, after everyone had a chance to read the funnies, and cut out the dolls and clothes and they kept them in a shoe box. I don't remember if there were any male dolls or if they were all females. Not being one to play with dolls myself, I never paid that much attention to them. The girls collected these paper dolls all during WWII and probably had a couple of boxes of them when we relocated to Arizona in 1945. I am not certain but am reasonably sure that the boxes of dolls came West with the girls. The two oldest girls and the next to oldest of my brothers came out first. They traveled on a Greyhound bus. I don't remember how many days the trip took. My dad had a regular job at that time and had bought a small house so the family had a place to live. That was "The House In The Desert" about which I have written several times. The weather here has been more spring like for the past few days after the record breaking heat spell we had last week. I have been able to begin the weeding process in the front yard. I want to get rid of a lot of the more invasive desert wild plants before they bloom and set seed which will result in even more to get rid of next year. I have also been removing a lot of the African dasies for the same reason. I had two pre-op heart tests yesterday. First was an echo cardiogram followed by a nuclear stress test. The stress test was done on a treadmill and lasted about 10-12 minutes. I was told that I would be radio active for a couple of days. If I was going to have to fly on a commercial airline during that time, I would need to have a letter explaining the reason for the alarm going off during pre screening at the airport. The testers were pleased with the way I handled the tests. I will have to go back next Monday to discuss the results. I have an appointment with my primary care doctor this morning. He is going to have to re-order the outdated chest x-ray and blood work. Going to Sam's and Walmart tomorrow, need a few things, also a new DVD is out Les Miserables and next Tuesday Lincoln comes out on DVD, really want to see that. We got Argo, and Life Of Pi I liked ARGO, very suspenseful, I can see why it got best picture, and Life Of Pi, I didn't like watching the Tiger eating other animals, but the ending was good. We don't go to the movie theaters anymore, my husband says they are filled with germs, people coughing, your eating popcorn and candy and your hands are on the arms of the chairs, than you grab some popcorn with those same hands, he said all the germs on the arms of the chairs go right in your mouth !!! I said take some wipes and wipe off the arms, he said that's not good enough.. I can't win I guess !!!! It's late here, so going to bed now. Sully, in cold and overcast California !!!
We pored over those catalogs till they were dog eared and pages torn...This made it a little easier to use in the old Outhouse...We hated it when the colored pages was all that was left....RUFF! SO primitive to think of those days now.... I think you are doing a great job of allowing us to share in your life...but so few seem to be willing to do that anymore... Maybe if we were allowed to talk about world affairs the list would be opened to discussion more. Just a thought. Barb
