I remember jacks. I used to play all the time. I played with my boys when they were little. I probably have some around here somewhere. My daughter's children raised chickens for a while. Our granddaughter had a pet chicken, a black and white one, that she named ChickenPox. In my old age, I have this urge to raise chickens, I watched Martha Stewart one time and her TV program was all about her chickens and the different breeds. She bought them from a place that shipped them to her, some chickens have different color eggs, some lay a light blue egg, some brown, and I am not sure if there were any other colors. Some chickens lay bigger eggs than others, some of the eggs looked a little on the small side. When I buy eggs at the market, I like the extra large size, because the yolk is my favorite, I would love to buy double yokes, but I haven't been able to find any for sale in my area. I knew the yolk is not suppose to be best for you, but I don't like the white, no flavor, I don't even like the feel of the white in my mouth. So I mostly make scrambled eggs, if I fry eggs, I cut off as much white as i can. I can't tell you where or when I first got this feeling, but I also don't like the feeling of raw onions in my mouth, cooked is fine, but no ra! w onions. Anyway on to chickens, Martha built her own chicken coop, she poured concrete even had a little wall up the sides, maybe two feet, this was so predators couldn't dig in under the coop, than covered the bottom with a foot of dirt of some kind, than put a light gravel on top. For the sides she had some kind of wire, don't know if it was chicken wire ?? but this is the part I really liked, she planted climbing roses around the bottom, the rose plants grew up the outside and onto the wire, she said when they were in bloom, it was beautiful, no ugly chicken coop for her chickens !!!! I remember playing jacks in the summer, the sidewalks were still warm from the summer sun, we would sit out there and play jacks till our mom's called us in. Do you remember playing pigs in a blanket, you cupped your one hand, leaving a small opening, and than bounced the ball, scooting the jacks in the cupped hand, of course there were the one's, you could only put one jack in, than it went on to two's, and all the way up to (was it ten or was it twelve jacks) ??? I loved playing jacks with my best friend, she lived right next store to me. Her mother was so good to me, she made matching dresses for her daughter and me. One year she made us matching Easter dresses for the two of us, they were so pretty, she also bought me shoes they were the same, she was so good to me. The day they moved away I cried, I missed Fay and her mother for the longest time, I lost track of them, her mother remarried, and I never heard from them again. If they only knew what their kindness meant to! me, I won't say my mother didn't love me, but my mother was different, she wasn't playful, or ever got deeply involved in my life, as long as I didn't get in trouble, I could more or less do what I wanted. In the summer, I could leave the house early, go down the street to a ladies house, she was in her seventies, I would help her dust her furniture, she would make tea for us, and we would have cookies or little cakes, than I would go over to the Goat ladies house and spend hours playing with her two goats, she would milk the goats and tell me stories about her youth, she came from Oklahoma, they discovered oil on their property, her son moved to California, so they moved her here too. I don't think her son lived very close to her, she was a bit strange, but once in a while I would see this big car show up at her house, after she would tell me her son had come to visit her. I don't think she had one friend on our street, my grandmother would have nothing to do with her, sh! e kept a dirty house, she let the goats in her house when it rained, a abomination to my grandmother. The house was pretty bad, but the women was so interesting to me, she was so different to me, she didn't care what anyone thought of her, she lived like she wanted. She rented out rooms in her house, she even made her garages into living quarters, and rented them out too. One day they moved this small trailer in her back yard, a old man lived in it, he was a movie star form silent films, he played mostly in western films, he was pretty badly crippled up, he said from falling off horses. He was so nice to me, I think he was lonely as much as I was, after my best friend moved away. He was a kind sweet old man, he never tried to get funny with any of us kids, that was another person I thought was so interesting, so different, but had the time to tell me stories about the movies he had made My granddaughter is here and were going out to do a little fun shopping, so get back to you guys later!! Ah yes, Jacks! When I was in the 5th & 6th grades I played jacks with the girls during recess. I just looked at it as an exercise in hand/eye coordination. It helped me when we played ball during the lunch hour. I don't remember playing football in grammar school until I was in junior high. Then we played the sport that was in season during our lunch hour. We had a physical education class. During that period we played volleyball and soccer. I never liked soccer. Too rough!. I liked volleyball. I played at the net a lot because of my height. I was 5' 10" tall. I became a reasonably good shot blocker and spiker. Must have been a carryover from when I played jacks. Sully, I think I saw that one with Martha Stewert. But we have to remember she has alot of people doing all that building for her and taking care of them. I noticed even when she does the cooking shows, there are other people there helping her. We don't have all that help. Would like to and then they can clean up. But I do think some times I would like chickens again, but there is a period you feed them and they are taking a break from laying. Gotta go. Hi Pat, Are your baby chicks hatching naturally? They always look so cuddly but mama doesn't like if you handle them. What breed do you raise or are they just chickens? some folks do not know there are all different kinds of chickens and eggs of many colors. Tell us more. I get the American Girl catalog and there are many things in there a little girl could use to create her own dolls and play land. I think they still have American Girl paper dolls. I have some that have never been cut out. I competed against myself to see how neat I could be when cutting out the clothes. Has anyone used Ground Turkey in place of hamburger in recipes calling for ground beef? Do you use special seasonings to take away the turkey taste? I am the odd ball who does not like the taste of turkey so HELP please. I got a good buy on it at Kroger's. Plus, it is supposed to be healthier. While the Hobnail spreads were my favorites, I liked the others too, as long as they were not gaudy. I like the more quiet classic designs. Maybe the reason I liked chenille even when I was little was an unknowledgeable about my family was an inner tie to the area of my forefathers. Some of whom lived in Whitfield Co. I loved Jacks but was never very good at them. I probably did not play them often enough but cousin, Letitia, was a whiz at them. I would ask her to keep going even after I lost just to see her do all the different stages. No, Barb not new just don't comment much, Don't stay on the computer long at a time. I' m a retired teacher and still substitute at two schools. My husband passed away 18 months ago, so I help my son with our cattle and I have horses, chickens and always plant a big garden. Love flowers so plant those too, have fruit trees etc. I sew for people and have an embroidery machine. I will turn 75 in April so remember all those things old also. I'm also into family research. Really enjoy reading all your memories. I have baby chicks hatching this morning, love to hear them cheep. Thanks for asking. Neil Diamond is one of my favorites. Thanks so much for this website. Barb
I decided to watch one of the new shows and put it on. Within about 20 seconds the couple was really goin at it. It was really explicit and then I thought this added nothing to the show and it was done for shock value. I like it when you watch a program you get that program and not have to watch things that don't pertain to the program. One of my favorite shows is Flashpoint or is it Flashback (brain dead). No sex, no swearing, the stars are middle aged bald men in their 40's and not good looking but great actors. Barb
Please let us know how your surgery goes Robert. We are all thinking of you and hope and pray you slide through it ok. Barb
I remember those paper dolls and their clothes to. Do you remember 'jacks'? I was really good at playing jacks. When my oldest sister got married and moved downstairs of us, I used to play baseball with her son, my nephew. We had a very small yard and he was pitching to me and I hit the ball right through my sister's window. I taught him the names of the Pittsburgh Pirates, what base they played at. He was about 7 or 8 at the time. Now he is 6' 3 ins. tall and weighs about 225 lbs.and is 60 years old and has 2 girls. Barb
