    2. Lord have mercy ! Not only didn't I know how you got pregnant when I was little, I had never heard anyone talk about all that fascinating stuff ...I mean I didn't know how one got pregnant when I started dating..probably even when I got married! Hard to believe, but Mother was a proper reserved English type woman and we were brought up very strictly ...We were a family of 9 kids and a widowed Mother, but we never saw each other in underwear, or anything like that....Poor we might be, but we weren't trashy folks...We all grew up to be respectable , and have stayed that way... I must admit our Dad's raucous sense of humor crops up one in awhile, but the women that married all those wild Winchester boys watered their blood down a great deal..Jeannie T PS: I would have probably sold my soul to get to listen in on those ladies talking ! lol ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Sun, 24 Mar 2013 12:11:46 -0400 (EDT) Shirley Sullivan <[email protected]> writes: > > Do you remember the saying, "Little pitchers have big ears" or > something like that ??? 3. Do you remember the saying, "Little pitchers have big ears" or something like that ??? Well, as a child growing up I was very quiet, didn't talk much, and could be as quiet as a church mouse. I knew from early on where babies came from, because I heard a lot gossip, I shouldn't have. My mother would have friends drop by, they would sit and drink a cup of tea, or coffee, of course they would talk about what was happening in their lives, about their friends, anything new with the neighbors and how their family was doing. I would be sitting on the floor, coloring in my color book, or playing with my paper dolls, from the our side I must looked like I was all consumed in what ever I was doing. As I look back now, I think the reason my mother never thought I was intent on listening, was because I never asked any questions about what they were talking about. I heard about a women's labor, how long it took some times, the terrible pain involved, how they tried to prevent getting pregnant in the first place, and other things I shouldn't have heard. My mother told me when I was older, I didn't talk till I was almost three years old, Oh, I said words like Mama, and a few simple words, but really didn't put words together to tell people anything about what I wanted, or what I was thinking. I remember hearing my mother talk about a friend who was going to have a baby, and she wasn't married, and the shame she would have to suffer. I remember my mother talking about her friend Blanch, her husband was going to leave her, he wanted their car, when he came to get it, she climbed on top of the hood of the car thinking he would just leave with out the car, but no, he drove a away with her on the hood, she started screaming, he stopped the car, he pulled her off the car, than got back in and drove away. After that, she played the record "Since You Went Away" on her record player, till it was worn out. I felt sorry for her, I think she really loved her husband, and missed him something terrible, she lived across the street from us, in the apartment house. When I was thirteen I use to baby sit for her, I really liked her, she was a good women, I could never understand why her husband divorced her. I overheard all kinds of things I shouldn't have, all because I was so quiet, I think sometimes they forgot I was in the room. Jeannie, I asked my husband about The white leg chickens, he said you were right they were "White Leghorns" I have to go in and do something about breakfast, it's going to me a group effort !! My husband in in there cutting potato's for hash brown, my granddaughter Brooke is cutting up the onion, I will get the eggs out and get them ready to scramble. I'll get the margarine out to butter the toast, and get out some jelly, set the table, and than we will eat !!! All of my dear friends on Memory Lane, have a good Sunday. Sully, in Sunny California.

    2. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ! We got married 52 years ago, but hubby never does anything but take me out to eat...Not a real treat since we eat out often...I always give him gifts on every occasion...plus buy him something special every time I go shopping...I must admit I DO buy candy I like, so in a way I get a gift! Maybe the 'white leg chickens 'were White Leghorns ? There was also a Brown Leghorn ...not really meaty enough for fryers, but laying machines...Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Sat, 23 Mar 2013 11:58:07 -0400 (EDT) Shirley Sullivan <[email protected]> writes: > > > > My husband grew up in a area of California, that at one time was > consider out in country, his family raised their own chickens, also > had rabbits, and three ducks. 2. When I went to a one room school, one of the neighbors was our teacher......She had several kids in that school. One day her oldest boy was walking back from the front of the school giving his lesson and he tapped a girl on the head with his book as he walked by..Didn't hurt her, kinda a flirty thing. His Mother told him to go home and tell his dad to put him to bed. Next day we talked to him about it and he said his dad gave him a whipping. We found out later Teacher was pregnant...so might have been having a bad day. When did we find out she was pregnant? When she had the baby. I think another Mother taught for awhile...didn't know people were pregnant back then...They would just tell us they were getting fat and that was fine with us. I was 10 years old, my brother 12 when brother Paul was born, and we knew nothing about it....We were woke up in the middle of the night and sent down the lane to the neighbors because Ma told us Mama was sick...Next morning, we headed home and met my Aunt Zula at the bottom of the lane..and she told us the r had brought us a baby in his black bag. There was only 8 of us so we were happy we had a baby bother! Wow! I asked Mama how she knew to make a pretty baby blanket and she said 'I just knew' I didn't question her...Geez! 3. Our daughter has raised her three (girl and two boys) to be respectful. They can go anywhere, and if the adults get involved and they have to wait, they are quiet, talk between themselves,or listen to the adults and learn about something. Our youngest is 8, he was in cub scouts. I am not bragging but he was the best behaved child in any of their local groups. Even the scout masters two boys were horrible. Our grandson quit cub scouts. He wasn't learning anything as too much fooling around, and he lost interest. He got the good sportsman's award for every year he was in cubs; and his brother did, too. They get to go a lot of places with a lot of different people because they behave. There is one little girl in his class whose mother has spoiled her beyond belief. One of the teachers told me so far they have bargained with each other to avoid having her in their class. She equals two brats!! Neysa ----- Original Message ----- From: Shirley Sullivan To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, March 23, 2013 2:20 PM Subject: [ML] Children Today I will add my two cents, first thing is children don't have to pay the consequences of their actions anymore. I remember my middle son, and two other boys on our street, took marker pens and wrote and drew on our neighbors curb. When I was informed of his actions, I filled a big pail with hot water, soap, and a little bleach, a big scrub brush and marched him down the street to apologize to Mrs Hayes, than he was to scrub the curb till it looked like it did before be deiced to decorate it, or till it got dark. He was lucky, about a hour worth scrubbing and it was clean, HE NEVER DID THAT AGAIN !!!! In high school my daughter was excused from class and told to go to study hall (the Library), but instead she and a couple of her friends walked off campus (about a block away) and went to Yum-Yum Donut shop, well they were caught off campus, and because they knew me, (I use to help them get out the school newspaper) they called me and told me, they were going to let her off with a warning, I said "what do you usually do" They said "they had to stayed after school for a hour, for two weeks" I told them, she had to face the consequences of her actions, so she stayed after school like all the others who were caught off campus with her, during school hours. SHE NEVER DID IT AGAIN !! Only once did I feel a teacher was is the wrong, I didn't put the teacher down, or say I even thought they weren't fair, What I did say to my child was: you will go out in the world to work, and there will be all kinds of people out there, you will have to learn to get along with lots of fellow workers you don't agree with, you have to make your own way in this world !!! I have a niece who is raising her children to lie, and she makes excuses for their bad behavior (I told her and she didn't like it) That our job is to teach our children how to get along, to be truthful, follow instructions, be fair, always be polite, so they can go into the world, get a good job, and contribute to society. We must raise our children not to think they are special, and that they don't have to follow the rules, because when they leave home, those people they work for, will not think they are special, and won't accept their bad behavior. The success of a parent is when your child leaves home and makes a good life for them self. Of course our children aren't perfect, they make mistakes, but if they learn from mistakes, they go on and make a good life for them selves. 3. I will add my two cents worth also, as a retired Daycare owner and having worked with children for fifty or so years--I do object to people making comments on how the kids dress, color their hair, have studs in their faces or piercings-that does NOT make them any different from others inside-some kids do these things because they like the way they look, are insecure and this makes them feel like the "in" crowd--these are the kids that are good kids most of the time. it is the kids who have parents who buy them out of all messes and tell them they can do whatever they want ---- will not listen to constructive criticism etc, the kids are usually bright, college bound from money that go wild and kill and maim and even when they get into Fraternities and Sororities they do mean and dangerous things to others being pledged----I found lower and middle income people give the kids more love and sense of family and have great kids who understand right from wrong-but the wealthier parents dump the kids at daycare, nannies on weekends so they can "get away" and these are the children with no family life and have been given everything ever needed-once they get a little freedom they go nuts----the old saying "you can't judge a book by it's cover" applies here. I love free spirited kids-I have seen children from six weeks to 30 years old and you can tell from when they are small what kind of kids they will be--and most of the kids that go wrong have over protective parents who "covered" for them and bought them out of all scrapes! To this day I am in touch with the majority of "my daycare families"-I get invited to birthday, graduations, weddings-I have never been afraid of any kids and I love them all-the ones that need a good shaking and talking to are the parents when the kids are in their formative years-Sully you are spot on making kids pay the consequence for their actions! 3. Way to go, Marilyn!!! I taught first grade for 18 years. I retired in 1980. My legs were giving me problems, (veins and knees, both now fixed), so I had decided that this particular year would be my last. When dear, devoted, sweet, Grandma type kindergarten teacher, who was the first one at school and the last to leave, was talking to a little boy before school, at the beginning of the year; I heard him say, "I don't have to do anything you say, cause my daddy told me I didn't have to." I thought, "Boy, I don't want that in my room, I am so glad I won't be here!!!" If I hadn't planned on retiring yet, that would have cinched it for me. Just in the 18 years I had been there, it had changed that much. Now, when I look at the kids I see, with earrings in every possible place, and hair spiked in a rainbow of hideous colors, and the clothes they have on, that don't fit in one way or another, I wonder, how a teacher can keep her mind on what she is teaching?" There, that is my soap box for today. When the behavior of 4 year olds can drive a teacher with 20 years experience to say "I AM DONE", it is a sad, sad world. I highly anticipate next Friday will be Missie's last day as a teacher. I can not totally blame the children as the attitude of parents and her administration have contributed their fair share to her decision. In our day if a teacher had sent home a note about our behavior we would have been ready to run and hide. Not these kids because parents just let it go. Her director and assistant director loaded Missie's class with all the behavior problems in the 4 year old group, as one teacher was new and the other can not handle stress. Missie has always been the go-to person for problem children but not with all of them with her all day long. A large percentage of today's children have never dealt with any type of actions result in reaction reality. Most of us and our peers grew up knowing there were do's and don't's and we knew if we stepped over the line what would happen. We grew up knowing when we were doing good and when we were not. We were encouraged to strive not to be mediocre and that was almost from the day we were born. The list of the differences from then and now could fill this page. We grew up to be respectful, honest, caring, hardworking individuals. I am not sure if these traits are even important to today's youngsters. Every child is different in many ways and as a parent or teacher it is best to use different types of discipline. I have used them all, both as a teacher and as a parent, despite what Dr. Spock convinced several generations of a few decades ago. I am very sincere when I say Dr. Spock made a great contribution to the problems we are facing today. I could go on and on but I will stop. 3. Thanks for all the comments concerning Ground Turkey. Now I just have to decide what recipe I will try using first. I might just try it in my mom's meatball recipe. That one also has Ground Italian Sausage in it. I will let everyone know how I like the switch. 2. What a wonderfully interesting letter ! I too love large eggs, and always got the largest I could...Jumbo... when my two grand kids stayed around here a lot. They were so thrilled when an egg had double yolks ! One time we visited Bear's sister and her husband gave me 2 dozen jumbo eggs ...He got them at a hatchery and almost all had double yolks, so guess THOSE wouldn't hatch out baby chicks..Any hatcheries near you? An elderly friend of mine...{Eva Grace Atteberry, may she rest in peace...} taught me a lot about chickens....I just knew hens laid eggs...She said they lay the same shape egg all their lives...Some are round, some very long and thin, some have freckles, some are brown, some are white some cream, and then there are the Aracuana eggs that are colored like Easter eggs....Blue, green, pink, warm brown, etc. She said each day the egg is a tiny bit smaller till the hen lays out her 'clutch'..She said they lay just a little bit later each day..Oh, she knew it all, because she spent almost all of her time outside working with her rabbits, chickens, ducks, etc....She grew up on an isolated ranch in Montana, and had a tutor other than a couple of years at public school...The only person I ever knew that had seen Passenger pigeons......I should write a book! I love the little short legged banty's and enjoy hearing them sing as they scratch around the yard...Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Fri, 22 Mar 2013 12:44:07 -0400 (EDT) Shirley Sullivan <[email protected]> writes: > In my old age, I have this urge to raise chickens, I watched Martha > Stewart one time and her TV program was all about her chickens and > the different breeds. 3. I don't eat ground beef because I don't like it. I only use it for for meatballs. I use ground chicken for meatloaf and for burgers. I'm not a big fan of turkey either. The few times I had the turkey I thought it was dry, but maybe that was the cooking. My cousin uses ground turkey all the time, and will buy things like sausages made with ground turkey because she doesn't eat beef. You should be able to use it in any recipe instead of beef, so just find something that has a lot of other seasonings like chili, or something with a lot of onions, or meatloaf. I found this website - http://www.sixsistersstuff.com/2013/02/50-delicious-ground-turkey-recipes.ht ml Good luck, let us know how it turns out.
