Thank you Helen... I don't think the area where you lived has changed all that much, but I confess it's been a long time since I've been through there.. From Seward junction back into Austin, Leander/Cedar Park has seen remarkable change. It has been cold this week.. trees are beginning to bloom but it got below freezing two consecutive days this week. Very rare for this time of year. If you get to come this fall, let me know and maybe Sherry and I will get to meet you. Keep me posted.... okidokers? I still have the one that was in my grandmother's kitchen. I loved that thing when I was a kid. I thought those steps that pulled out were the greatest thing. All the little kids sat on the steps to get their shoes tied. All I have to say is AMEN. They can go anywhere, and if the adults get involved and they have to wait, they are quiet, talk between themselves,or listen to the adults and learn about something. Our youngest is 8, he was in cub scouts. I am not bragging but he was the best behaved child in any of their local groups. Even the scout masters two boys were horrible. Our grandson quit cub scouts. He wasn't learning anything as too much fooling around, and he lost interest. He got the good sportsman's award for every year he was in cubs; and his brother did, too. They get to go a lot of places with a lot of different people because they behave. There is one little girl in his class whose mother has spoiled her beyond belief. One of the teachers told me so far they have bargained with each other to avoid having her in their class. She equals two brats!! Neysa ----- Original Message ----- From: Shirley Sullivan To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, March 23, 2013 2:20 PM Subject: [ML] Children Today I will add my two cents, first thing is children don't have to pay the consequences of their actions anymore. I remember my middle son, and two other boys on our street, took marker pens and wrote and drew on our neighbors curb. When I was informed of his actions, I filled a big pail with hot water, soap, and a little bleach, a big scrub brush and marched him down the street to apologize to Mrs Hayes, than he was to scrub the curb till it looked like it did before be deiced to decorate it, or till it got dark. He was lucky, about a hour worth scrubbing and it was clean, HE NEVER DID THAT AGAIN !!!! In high school my daughter was excused from class and told to go to study hall (the Library), but instead she and a couple of her friends walked off campus (about a block away) and went to Yum-Yum Donut shop, well they were caught off campus, and because they knew me, (I use to help them get out the school newspaper) they called me and told me, they were going to let her off with a warning, I said "what do you usually do" They said "they had to stayed after school for a hour, for two weeks" I told them, she had to face the consequences of her actions, so she stayed after school like all the others who were caught off campus with her, during school hours. SHE NEVER DID IT AGAIN !! Only once did I feel a teacher was is the wrong, I didn't put the teacher down, or say I even thought they weren't fair, What I did say to my child was: you will go out in the world to work, and there will be all kinds of people out there, you will have to learn to get along with lots of fellow workers you don't agree with, you have to make your own way in this world !!! I have a niece who is raising her children to lie, and she makes excuses for their bad behavior (I told her and she didn't like it) That our job is to teach our children how to get along, to be truthful, follow instructions, be fair, always be polite, so they can go into the world, get a good job, and contribute to society. We must raise our children not to think they are special, and that they don't have to follow the rules, because when they leave home, those people they work for, will not think they are special, and won't accept their bad behavior. The success of a parent is when your child leaves home and makes a good life for them self. Of course our children aren't perfect, they make mistakes, but if they learn from mistakes, they go on and make a good life for them selves. I have made my share of mistakes, I hope I have learned form them, because if I haven't learned by now I am going to end up all alone and very very sad !!!! I was thinking the other day about the kitchen stool my mother use to have, it had chrome legs, it was red plastic on top, and you could pull out two small steps inside, so as to climb up and reach into a kitchen cabinet that was up high. My Mom was only 5 foot, 10 inches tall, so she had trouble getting into almost all cabinets, unless she used the little stepping stool. When I would go to my mothers, my oldest son would sit on the stool, we would tie him in with a kitchen dish towel, and use it as a high chair. I do believe there was a crack in the red plastic, probably from being used so much. I think my mother gave it to me, but I don't remember where it went ???? Today I have a full day, better get at it !!! Sully, in Sunny California
I guess I could have said bath rooms but a picture I shared on FB this morning made me wonder if I was in a minority with my memories of the #2 galvanized tub. This goes along with the hot water either being heated on a wood stove or in a big cast iron kettle. Memories from my youth. I woke up at 5 and read till 7, when I knew it would be light enough to see to get to the paper box.....Well doggone if we didn't have snow on the Abelia hedge out front! I took my camera with me to get the paper, admiring the tufts of snow on the beautiful Flowering quince and Forsythia flowers.....The wind was already blowing the snow away, but I wanted to get pictures to commemorate the only snow we've had all season...Well, we did get a little skiff of snow on the grass one time....It was all melted by about 10 AM, but it was snowing pretty well when dark came tonight...Too warm for it to be much of a problem.... I don't think we're gonna have company for Easter...but will get half a ham anyway...Handy to keep in the fridge and whack on at times...May cut it off the bone and freeze it....I might color a few eggs and give to the neighbors..I used to use onion peels and such to dye the eggs, but guess I will use food colors...I like to bind ferns, etc. to the eggs and dye them that way....Not much fun if you don't have little kids to share with. Speaking of kids, the little kids down the street say they are moving...I asked Mason where they were moving today and he said India....Said that's where the white people sit in front of the bus and black ones sit in back. Must be a time warp.....Thinking he might have meant they were moving to Indiana....Oh well, it'll happen before we are ready...and won't poor Buzz be sad....Jeannie T' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Mon, 25 Mar 2013 10:41:07 -0400 (EDT) Shirley Sullivan <[email protected]> writes: > Good morning Friends > > My granddaughter asked me if I was having Easter dinner on Sunday, I > thought for a moment Easter dinner on Sunday ???? Good morning Friends It's Monday, when I first opened my eyes, I didn't want to get up. Our one cat Willy Boy was on the bed, he was making a funny noise, he wanted one of us to get up and feed him. I thought if I lay here like I am asleep, maybe my husband will get up and feed him and make the coffee, but no luck !!! So here I am on the computer, fed both cats, and made the coffee, and I am sitting here drinking my first cup. I always have this anticipation when I am about to look at Memory Lane Posts, but what a let down, no new posts???? I have to get everything ready for our taxes today, my husband has a appointment with the tax man.. Wednesday I have my eye treatment, and you know what that means, one day of just being miserable, stinging, eye watering, and feeling just awful in general. My granddaughter asked me if I was having Easter dinner on Sunday, I thought for a moment Easter dinner on Sunday ???? I hadn't even thought beyond Wednesday, I am usually good and try to stay quiet for a few days after the eye treatment, don't want to get a infection in that eye. I don't usually go out much, just to make sure I don't get around any bad germs, or let anything blow into my eye. Maybe if I make a list, my husband will go out and get what we need for a Easter dinner ??? We always shop during the week, the weekends have long lines, fighting for a parking place and just to many people everywhere. I always put clean sheets and pillow cases on the bed the morning of the treatment, sometimes as soon as I get home, I go to bed and try to take a nap, it helps a lot, having my eye closed for a time. They have this closed circuit TV for all of us waiting in the waiting room, it's usually about animals in the wild, and there is one part I despise, it animals catching other animals and eating them. I am about ready to go out and buy them some other DVD, maybe about traveling to romantic locations around the world !!! That's all us old people need, is watching the cruelty of animals crying and making pitiful noises while being eaten !!! My husband just got up, went out to get the newspaper, so I think I'll go down and watch a little news and have another cup of coffee. Have good Monday everyone. Sully, in Sunny California
