Pat, Being able to move them inside and have fresh veggies until Christmas is just wonderful. I hope I can make proper choices for containers in size and soil etc., my little garden patch is right of to the side of my front porch, gets good sun also. I have started Coleus and Lupines from seed inside to plants in the less sunny spots and will do a few others, would like to do one pot of different lettuces and then tomatoes and cucumbers-love yellow squash as well--so many choices! Trying to plan where things will grow best right now! Helen
Thank you Jeannie, you have really given me lots of great ideas for planting here---I am planning where to put things right now-we can't really plant until around Mothers Day here because we can get hard frosts right into early June. I am really looking forward to gardening. When we lived In Texas I had gardens three seasons of the year and a huge vegetable garden but had a husband then to haul and shovel and we used black plastic to keep out weeds also had auto watering system-so this will be a different kind of garden for me! Love your wonderful ideas for getting started! Thanks a lot! Helen
It has been hard emotionally at times. I doubt I will ever be in another relationship. I have buried 2 husbands. Won't risk doing it again. So I live alone on the ranch. I've rescued 3 sweet ponies, They have become large dogs. They follow me around, when I do chores. This week I adopted a pair of cats. They are brothers, family needed to move couldn't take the cats. I have 5 dogs now. We are all well, happy. On Thursday, April 11, 2013, CAROL KUNZ wrote: > Lana, > > Well, well, well, so that is "our" Belva I keep seeing on Facebook? Sully, You paint such vivid pictures with your words! I just loved your description of how your back yard changed through the years from the time your children were real little, then moving through their ‘tween years, through their teen years, and on through the subsequent years when your back yard became yours to do with as you wished for yourself. Thank you for this delightful essay. Donna Peachtree City, GA From: Shirley Sullivan Sent: Thursday, April 11, 2013 10:58 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [ML] Gardens and back yards Good morning dear friends GARDENS Loved the mental picture of your yard Robert. First let me tell you Robert, you will be in my prayers, for a good surgery and fast recovery. It is still early spring, I know how hot it gets by late May in a desert community, hoping your shoulder will be on the mend, by the time summer arrives. Jeannie, that was great, all the info about soil and different ways to plant veggies and flowers. I have seen a Tomato plant growing in a bag of planting mix at our Home depot, I have never tried it my self, but it would be a quick way to plant things, especially if your soil needed a lot of amending. We have lived in this home, now over fifty years. Our first son was a year and a half when we moved in, the back yard was first made a safe place for my children to play, we had a swing set, sand box, and we put in a round circle of cement on one side so the children could ride their tricycles, but put a hole in the center so we could eventually put a tether poll out there, for playing tether ball when they got older. Later we put up a basketball hoop, we built a tree house in a Jacaranda tree for the boys, than my husband built them a castle, with a draw bridge. Looked pretty cool, if I must say so myself, the children in our neighborhood loved come to our house to play. Our daughter loved to play on the bar at school, and because it was so popular, and felt she didn't get her turn enough, asked her father to build her one at home here. So he went up to school, and measured the bar, and put one in the back yard for daddy's little girl, and it's still there, it is so smooth! now after years of children playing on it, I now dry my bathroom rug on it, so as not to ruin the backing of the rug. He also built our daughter a play house, but it never really got finished right, she grew faster than he got around to painting and finishing the inside, so it became a storage shed to some degree after she lost interest in it. The Castle turned into a Pigeon coop for our youngest son, when he was about 15, the draw bridge was removed, the stilts sawed off and the building lowered to the ground, and they built nesting boxes for the birds inside, I wasn't into Pigeons and the mess they made, but my husband had Pigeons when he was a boy, and our son loved them. As our three children grew into young teenagers, the yard changed, the Castle/Pigeon coop was torn down, Pigeons long gone, play house gone, tree house gone. My husbands mother, her husband passed away and she moved in with his sisters, we bought the mobile home they had once lived in [for a song] and ! moved it up to the Colorado River, and so began our years of Water ski ing, Jet skiing, Dirt biking, and the boys driving the Jeep around the RV park trying to impress girls. One of our boys friends since childhood, practically lived at our house [his parents were going through patch] and he went with us everywhere, I now had three son's. I loved that boy, he was a good kid too, grew into a fine man. As our now adult children married and moved away, my love of making a beautiful gardens began. We have a slight hill at the back of our property, first we built a wall about four feet high towards the back, to keep back the hill, and planted fruit trees at the top of the wall, than made a low wall at the front of about maybe 2 feet, than filled in the space with good soil [ at least I thought it was good soil, but later learned it needed a lot of Amendment] leaving about 10 feet of fine growing space. Part of the garden was for growing Tomatoes and veggies [until we found out you couldn't keep growing Tomatoes in the same place, year after year] a! nd part was for my flowers. We also had planted a Apple tree on one end, and a Lemon tree close to the other end. Since than we have planted a Avocado tree, a Gala Apple tree, a white Peach, and a white Nectarine, all closer to the house. Of course we have the fruit trees on top, a Red apple, a Plum, a pear, and two Apricots and a large Fig tree. More to come !!! Sully, in Sunny California P.S. Was up for the sunrise, such a beautiful morning, warm and clear, but sadly it is to change, clouds this afternoon, cooling down, and fog tomorrow morning. We will have low clouds and overcast in the morning for several days. Lana, Well, well, well, so that is "our" Belva I keep seeing on Facebook? I knew it was YOU but I wasn't sure of Belva there! I remember you here writing about your daughters wedding and sending the pics of her in her wedding dress and then sadly losing your husband. My husband had died the year prior so I knew what raw emotions you had but losing 3 more in the next year or so must have been really hard. I am sure all those grandchildren help though. I was shocked that Marge is still on this list and I have tried to apologize to her for listing her as "gone." I think of our Emma a lot and know she pissed off a lot of people including Valentine and I believe Emma was the real reason Val left. I think Wild Bill is the most missed by me and I was surprised that his children didn't bother to send any acknowledgement of a contribution I sent in his memory. I can't believe that Lil Ellen "took" to Ema! In fact I am shocked, I can only remember how crude Ema was and I was under the impression that Ellen was from a very refined source, like tea parties and such. Hmmmm, one must not judge a book by it's cover I guess. I would love to be a mouse in the corner of that mailing list that Ellen created for Ema. It's too bad that if Alice has passed that her family would not have went through her computer or that she would have left instructions to let the list know. I wonder what ever happened to her book that she was writing? She was writing a book wasn't she? I remember her son wrote a book, I bought it but never read it for some reason. I did go and visit all the pictures that Margy Bousman put up for all of us and it made me sad to see how many are no longer writing to the lists. Oh Sully how I wish I could grow fruit trees here in Illinois. The tale of your garden reminds me of all the changes that have been made on this 100x300 lot since 1949. We built our first house--had a shell put up with all the material to finish the inside and a mortgage. My folks had owned the lot and sold it to us for back taxes. It took FOREVER for my husband to finish the inside. Of course he worked full time, picked up side jobs for extra money and wasn't a carpenter to start with. He learned a LOT over the years. We had three children there, they grew up, all their friends loved being at our place. Dad made a play house for our daughter and it was a work of art--windows, shutters, a flower box and dutch door. How the kids loved it--even tiled floor. When she outgrew it and the boys took over it went to pot. Then they built a "fort" in an old box elder tree. It must have had 5000 nails in it. They had two floors, a ladder to get up after swinging on a rope. Needless to say nary an adult ever got up there and not many girls. Many years later after they were married I had them take it down because of the hazard of other kids using it. They had to cut down the tree to dismantle it--how we all laughed at the sturdyness of that monstrosity. I have a piece of the tree that I use as "garden art" and it has at least 50 nails still in it. We split the lot in 1999 and built a ranch house on what had been my asparagus and strawberry bed. I have a small patch of garden and flowers all around the house--mostly annuals. My younger son bought our old house so I have someone next door and I appreciate all he does for me now that I am alone. Neither of my sons have the gardening gene and we knew that it would be the yard that would make us have to move as we got unable to do it. Now that I am struggling along on Social Security lawn service is beyond my budget. Last year God sent me an angel in the form of my nephew. He did all my yard work along with his girl friend just becaue they wanted to be helpful and they love doing it. My son mows the lawn but that's IT. He wouldn't know a weed if he fell over it and thinks dandelions are Gods favorite flower because He made so many of them. He brought me two that had bloomed yesterday--ya got to love him--he is never going to grow up. It is still very raw and chilly here in Chicagoland--the coldest April in 20 years. My old bones do not appreciate it. My daffodils are about ready to bloom and we may have some snow yet this week. Grr I will be 87 the end of May and I am so thankful for all I am able to do. I miss the ones from the list that are no longer on--but life goes on. Emma annoyed the life out of me but she had a right to her opinions as I have a right to mine. I think ours were just left and right!! I hear from VaL on occasion. She helped me more with genealogy than any one else. I do miss Pat--I think she is on Facebook but I just can't get into that. Send us some warm weather--it would be a treat. Good morning dear friends GARDENS Loved the mental picture of your yard Robert. So he went up to school, and measured the bar, and put one in the back yard for daddy's little girl, and it's still there, it is so smooth now after years of children playing on it, I now dry my bathroom rug on it, so as not to ruin the backing of the rug. My husbands mother, her husband passed away and she moved in with his sisters, we bought the mobile home they had once lived in [for a song] and moved it up to the Colorado River, and so began our years of Water skiing, Jet skiing, Dirt biking, and the boys driving the Jeep around the RV park trying to impress girls. Part of the garden was for growing Tomatoes and veggies [until we found out you couldn't keep growing Tomatoes in the same place, year after year] and part was for my flowers. But all is not lost, good weather for working in the yard !!!
Helen, I am going to send you a FB friend request and then I can send some information on container gardening. You would be surprised at the things you can use for gardening in containers. I have reduced the size of my gardens due to age and reactions to heat. I may try some containers this year as I do not think they would need weeding. I have grown more selective in what I plant and will probably limit my planting this year to tomatoes, peppers, and various members of the squash families. Since many of you live in the mountains or have little gardening space I thought you might get some good out of this article I wrote recently when someone asked me how you'd go about gardening or raising plants on rock, shale and clay . Theres several things you can do , such as ; Haul in woods dirt from the nearest place and make planting pockets among the rocks...Look around and see where weeds and grass are growing...root them out and put in flowers or veggies...Grow vining veggies on trellises made of sticks wired and nailed together . Hook strings to nails on poles , buildings or trees if there is enough sun,and train beans up the strings...Or cukes, gourds, morning glories...etc. You can grow a lot of things in boxes of woods dirt.... You can buy bags of dirt and plant things right in the bag...Potting soil is best, but cheaper top soil or compost will work. Just lay it on the side where you want it to stay , make some slits around the bottom for drainage, and cut X's in the top to set out tomatoes, whatever...You'll have to keep it watered....Cover with leaves or other mulch to look better..If you embed some rag strips in the bottom before you set the stuff out, you can run that strip down into a jug of water mixed with a little fertilizer....Just re fill the jug when empty...Have a series of bags or 5 gal buckets of dirt in a row...walk along with the hose and fill them all at once...Don't want to use a wick, just make a little hole in one side of the bottom of a milk jug, and set it at the base of your plant or bush...The water will drip out slowly and not be wasted....Mulch with anything that has ever been alive...shredded paper, old hay, leaves, grass clippings you have dried first...newspapers torn in strips....Tear them from top to bottom, with the grain of the paper...{Think it don't matter ? Try it...paper towels are the same way.} You CAN use whole sheets of newspaper , but must weight them down good... Set a few vegetables among your flowers if you have limited space...A border of carrots, onions, or strawberries looks pretty...Set clumps of asparagus in your flower beds....when you are through cutting for the summer it will grow into an airy beautiful plant..Grow garlic around your roses...helps them and is handy to dig when you need it...Rainbow Swiss chard is pretty growing, as are beets...Radishes left alone will get huge and grow tall plants with dainty pink or purple flowers on them. The seed pods taste just like radishes, and are mild flavored...They will keep growing and blooming till frost, usually... My cousins who live on a farm tried growing tomatoes, egg plant, etc. in a series of buckets and were well pleased with the results...The dirt out of them can be mixed with mulch and fertilizer and used again...OR , you can dump it all on a place you want to build up dirt....stack the buckets and start all over again next year. You could even paint the buckets, I guess...You could line those plastic milk crates with heavy plastic and use that...One cousin planted cucumbers in a childs plastic sand box...or you could use wading pools with a hole for drainage. All the grass underneath will be killed out...so don't set it in the middle of your lawn ! You can make your own dirt by hauling in bags of discarded leaves, spoiled hay, weeds, ,etc....If you can get the tree trimmers to dump their load of chips....Just mix with nitrogen fertilizer to break down the fibers and some dirt ...This works better the second year the chips are there..Sawdust is good,{ Again, use some nitrogen fertilizer to break it down }.. hen house debris...rotted manure ...Lawn services must dump the bags of grass clippings...If your place is closer than the dump..well ! Your County extension agent might be able to help you find sources ...Starbucks will save coffee grounds for you and they supply nitrogen. Haul sand from a handy creek to mix with that clay...Also till in lots of leaves, sawdust, whatever...Garden on the shares with a neighbor...Wish I had someone to do that with...Have a big garden and just keep it mowed..Garden in corners here and there...Oh me, I've made myself tired with all this work ! Gonna pour myself a big glass of tea and rest awhile ! Must feel strange, to have people speculating about your demise. I miss Emma, we wrote back and forth. Don’t miss Ema, she was mean to Bonnie Selig when she was dying of cancer, that just turned me off completely. And I have been wondering about Alice Williams myself. I enjoy reading what everyone writes and am especially appreciative of Sully’s writings. She keeps this group going better than anyone else. Connie I am still living. I have been working on the 2nd. Edition Of the Bauer Family. I do read all the emails. We had storms today and rain tonight. High to everyone.
