You might want to try one tomato plant in a container. Not too much work, and if you keep it watered & fertilized you should get a good yield. My dad & step mother grow tomatoes & herbs in pots. Their tomatoes were great last year. I gave my dad 2 artichokes in pots last year on father's day. They survived the winter in the garage and are about a foot tall now. Hope to have some artichokes this year. The end result was that he had an amazing amount of potatoes from those two little plots. The more dirt he added provided more dirt for the plan to make more seed/taters. I use paper plates whenever I can too. But there aren’t any nice holders. I think I have some wicker ones hidden away somewhere. The operative word is “hidden.” Are these chargers? I have to laugh at all the pot roast going around. We just polished off the last of the one I cooked 2 days ago. I bought an electric pressure cooker recently, wasn’t there a discussion of that here not too long ago? Anyway, that’s what I used to cook my pot roast. Connie Buy a good Crock pot, a supply of liner bags, and a recipe book on Slo cook meals. { You might also get a kids or bachelor type cook book.}While cooking breakfast load the 'dinner' in the pot and set it on low. Cereal for breakfast, or oatmeal with sliced banana...I like about 3 or 4 crumbled crackers on top. Build your own sandwiches /soup for lunch...Eat supper, remove bag from pot and refrigerate leftovers in it or throw it out... I use heavy duty paper plates on nice holders...for everyday. Hubby said he'd rather do that than wash dishes ...Little conference we had when HE retired...Told him I was retiring too...I still do a lions share of the cooking, but he can make us sandwiches , heat up soup, Nuke a big sweet potato for a snack, etc {serve cut in half with butter and sugar on it...etc...} Biscuits.....Have found a great way to make them. Put some self rising flour in a mixing bowl, add a little oil, milk to make a soft dough, and drop gobs of it into a small buttered skillet. Flatten out with spoon...Cover, low heat for maybe 5 minutes..Turn over to brown on the other side...tastes as good as regular biscuits to us and takes maybe 10 minutes, tops. I use 2 small skillets, and the dough is spread out well. When it's browned on both sides I slice in half and butter it. Eat with your favorite jam..Mine is black raspberry, but current jar is chunky apricot. Yum ! Well I hope to get them in earlier this year. I have potatoes that are sprouted and ready to go, I just have to decide where to put the bin. Last year I had it inside of my fenced garden - will probably do the same. I'll have to get out there and get them planted. Our weather is usually not warm enough to plant things before May, although things like peas & lettuce should be fine. With all of you on the cooking, never cared about it. When I was in High School Home Ec. hated it, already knew how to sew and didn't want to cook the stuff we had to. I really wanted to learn to weld and do woodwork but in those years girls couldn't take those classes they were for boys. Wouldn't let girls take science till we threw a big enough fit. My husband was from Louisiana and he and his family lived to cook and eat. His sister was a great cook and loved to. Of course when she had a job and kids they had a lady that came in and took care of the kids, cleaned, and got meals most of the time. After she retired they would come visit as I was going to work she would want to know what we would have that evening I never worried til I got home. After a couple of visits she cooked a bunch of her southern cooking and brought it. She got to cook what she liked, my husband got his kind of food I didn't have to cook. I never seasoned things enough. The months before he died he would think he wanted something in particular I would fix it and then he couldn't eat it or just a few bites. It was hard on him because he had always loved to eat. Now I eat mostly fruit and veggies. oh boy, I think we are all the same. I like the pot roast idea. Every thing in 1 pot. I was just thinking today I used to get a 7 bone roast, it was maybe a good 2 inches thick and covered the bottom of an electric frying pan. Add potatoes and carrots and there was your meal. There were 6 of us and had plenty. Now something like that, I havn't seen one for some time, but would probably be at least 10 dollars now or more. I think they must call it something else now. I have lots of receipes but have a hard time to figure out what to cook. Morning have to think whats for dinner as to defrost things. Some times I can think of lots and other times it is just nothing. My husband doesn't understand why it should be such a problem. Living in the country at least 10 miles in and back if you forget to get things to have on hand. One time I was coming down the driveway after working all day and saw that Ken's sister and husband had arrived. So I knew that would be over night and dinner. I was in luck that time had cooked a ham on the week end so of course left overs. Brother in law always liked baking powder biscuits. So through that together with jam, and enjoyed. We could have gone out to eat, but it is more comfortable at home and you can just visit and relax. I sure do miss them. But just hate to cook any more. Some times we have breakfast at night. Have a good pancake receipe, If I have bacon that is good and fix eggs. Once a week isn't going to hurt at this age. Getting old just isn't easy when you do alot of other things. right now more outside. The iside really needs work right now. Supposed to be really windy tomorrow so I think inside. We had to go looking for tractor parts today. So inside work tomorrow. Especially with 45 mi. an hour wind predicted. Every one be careful with all their planting. Quite some time ago I informed my husband that having cooking 3 meals a day for a family of 10 for over 50 plus years I was resigning only cooking full meals in the eve when I wanted too. First of all, Shirley, have you tried hand warmers to help the pain in your hands? They have several different kinds, battery, shake, etc. Cold bothers my arthritis also, use a lot of Deep Heating muscle rub. Yesterday I took 3 of my grandkids, 2 boys 14 and 18, girl 18 to Woolaroc Museum and animal reserve near Bartlesville, OK. It was Frank Phillips country home, beautiful place, lots of Western and Indian art and artifacts. The boys spent lots time in the rooms that display all the guns. Granddaughter took lots of pictures of the flowers. We ALL climbed the tower to the observation deck. My legs tell me today it wasn’t a smart thing to do. Doug, I am going to keep layering with the potatoes in to water tank. Has anyone planted in wooden palettes? The north end of my garden has grass that just spreads when I till, so we put plastic down then the palettes and filled with dirt, will plant in the cracks. Hope it will also kill grass. I’ve got prom and wedding dresses to get done. Everyone have a good day. Pat

The end result was that he had an amazing amount of potatoes from those two little plots. The more dirt he added provided more dirt for the plan to make more seed/taters. I found her experiment absolutely amazing... Hope this helps.. Gotta go and finish my taxes... lol The Dougster :-)*** On Sun, Apr 14, 2013 at 11:58 AM, Shirley Sullivan <[email protected]>wrote: > Good Morning > > > I want Doug to know I am thinking of him and Sherry, I have been thinking > of you guys for a few days now. My son is home safe and sound, got a e-mail from his I-pod phone, he gets a chip to go in his phone, or something like a chip when he goes to a foreign country, different chips for different countries. That way he stays in contact with everyone, all his advisors and us his family too. He sent me all kinds of messages, and photo's he took with his phone to show me the beautiful country of Lebanon. I want to thank all of you for keeping him in your prayers, it meant a lot to me, for the safety of our son !! I believe in prayer, it is the our best weapon against EVIL. Barb, I have heard about that kind of foot pain, they have clinics out here for that very thing. Sounds just excruciating, you can't do much when your feet hurt, at least I can't. I can see why you have to lie down, with your buttocks hurting, your feet feeling like pins going through them, it almost seems like to much to bare. We go through a lot as we age, and our health isn't good. Oh Sopharia I am feeling your pain, I do the same thing, I'll be making something, not from a recipe, but from memory, when I am ready to put it in the oven, I am hoping upon hope I haven't forgotten something. My husband said I should write them down, or type them up on the computer, and check off each ingredient as I put it in, so as to not to forget something. I am thinking that's not a bad idea !! yesterday I made a meatloaf, I said to my husband I hope I haven't forgotten anything, he said check you recipe, I said I don't have a recipe, I made this one up from a lot of different meatloaf's I have made over the last fifty years. I put in the oven, and when dinner came, I ate it and said to myself, something is different !!! Guess what I forgot to put in ??? EGGS It seemed to be falling apart, oh well, I think I'll take my husbands advice !!! So your not the only one Sopharia. I am sorry to hear your in so much pain, it sounds unbearable. Pain is a terrible thing, wears me out, make me grumpy, I become a very disagreeable old women. I have a lot of arthritis in my hands, I have all kinds of lumps on my finger joints, my pinkie on my left hand has a big lump on the first joint from the tip of the finger, it has been aching for two days now, the finger is now at a slant to the right, soon it will touch the next finger. I believe the finger aching is because we are to get rain tomorrow, and the temperature is to dip too. I was taking Advil for the pain, but last time I saw the doctor, he said when my blood test came back, I had some liver damage, so I take Tylenol now, but yesterday morning, I woke up with a back ache, than I noticed the pain was right where my kidneys are. So I might have taken to much Tylenol the day before, so I have tried not to take anything today, but boy does my finger hurt, it aches all the time, the only thing that helps at all, is when I hold it under hot water, but than it only lasts a little while, and it's aching again. It not fun getting old !!! Sleep tight, Sweet Dreams everyone !! Sully

YOU TOO ? I thought I was the only one ....Sure makes me want to lose a lot of weight...then my area of pain wouldn't be so much. *g* I keep on thinking about it......I actually feel blessed with a pain in the posterior only when I remember my two late sisters that had to take the strongest pain meds because they hurt all over all the time...Makes my problem minor...plus it doesn't hurt all the time...and it quits when I lie down on my heavily padded bed and read a book. This' princess and the pea disease 'is a curse all the females in my family have to bear..and a male or two....Sigh...Parts of my body hurt when poked or squeezed but not all the time...JneT ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Sun, 14 Apr 2013 20:33:18 -0400 Barbara Mangan <[email protected]> writes: > Sully, you are so funny and you always make my day. Have to go now, butt muscles hurting a lot. Quit laughing. Barb
I am really very very sad this year because I don't know how much planting that I will be able to do. I love it and wait all year for spring and summer to come around. Sadly, I have diabetic neuropathy in my feet and they hurt all the time. Also, because I used to get on my tippytoes to reach my plants, I injured the bottoms of my feet to the point that all that is there now is a bone sticking out in the middle of each foot and nothing but mosh on the sides of each foot. Extremely painful because I land on these bones with every step I take. My diabetic shoes do nothing for this pain. I wonder if some kind of operation would help? May inguire about it. If I have to have this pain all the time sometimes I think 'whats there for me. Kids prefer miserable (even after what he did) with one or two exceptions, grandkids prefer him to. He shows his true self to one of our kids and to one of the grandkids. He treats 3 of them completely different then he does the others, he is so very nice to them and speaks gently to them. The others he screams at. He has them fooled and he plays them. Guess I am feeling sorry for my self and this is the first time that I am. Barb
Barb, As for potato planting after we till draw rows with the old push plow and drop them in, cover and let them grow(hopefully). Last year we had put out a lot of old alfalfa hay for mulch, it was still to deep to be able to till so just made holes with the hoe stuck potatoes in and pulled the hay back over them. They did pretty well for as dry as it was. they sure were clean. This year I have an old cow water tub that the bottom is no good in, put straw in it and potatoes in that just to see what happens. My granddaughter said she grew them in a pillowcase when she was in college. She went to a green college Warren Wilson at Ashville NC.
