    3. yep, been keeping busy. Haven't loaded the rocks yet... Just too cold... Maybe in another day or two... we don't have weasels or mink so I have to blame it on the possums... As stated, it's cold. A whopping 15 this morning in Lampasas but we have a Southerly wind today so it won' last long.. can't wait for warmer weather. 3. Hi Shirley, We still get milk delivered to our house. [Massachusetts] Before we had delivery, we used to get our milk at a small local dairy. My kids got to milk the cows and watch the whole milking process. This dairy also sold the milk that was not homogenized, but they didn't have the bottles with the small area for the cream. They also had the best cream, because it was not ultra-pasteurized. Shady Oaks in Medway, MA They closed a few years back - I miss them. When I was growing up, we got milk delivered, but the milkman put it in a box, not in the house. This was in Rhode Island The same company still delivers milk there - Monroe Dairy - Now they have trucks that are painted like cows. My brother & I would always nag my mother to get the chocolate milk. In RI, we also got our eggs delivered. Now we buy our eggs at a farm. 2. Thanks once again for giving me something to pull up out of my aging memory banks and reminisce about... Our milk man was our Daddy, bringing in a bucket or two of milk warm from the cow, with little globules of butter floating on top it was so rich.,...I can remember seeing a horse drawn wagon delivering milk when I first started to town school....one of those cute little boxy wagons..all enclosed...We made our own butter, and Mama also sold cream to the cream station in town. She would keep it in fruit jars in the fridge till she went to town...This is several years after Dad died...as we didn't even have electricity in our area or a refrigerator to plug in during his time...Power lines came through there about 1947... Must tell you this...Hubby's cousin was acquainted with the entertainer Stuart Whitman, and tells a tale on him. He went hunting for Mountain lion and brought one home to have mounted. Tired from his drive he decided to put the body in the fridge in the garage till the next day. The milkman opened the door to put the extra milk in it and out tumbled a mountain lion! I don't remember if he ever returned or not! Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~````. 1. [ML] Fw: The Milkman Cometh
    2. My family also had the milkman deliver our milk. My Mom especially liked the cream on the top of the bottle of milk and would pour it off to save for her coffee. When we had a special dessert, the cream would be whipped with a little vanilla and some confectioners sugar for a pretty and delicious topping. Other times the milk would be mixed with the cream and enjoyed as really rich milk used for drinking or for making puddings or junket. (remember that?) The milkman also delivered fresh eggs, butter and other dairy products. The Dugan man - bread man in our town in New Jersey, had bread and coffee cakes. My grandmother lived across the street from us and she and my Mom would have coffee klotches with coffee cake or some homemade crullers. We all looked forward to the day the crullers were made! When my children were little, we also had milk delivery. The insulated metal box was placed by the door with the empty bottles picked up and the new milk bottles replacing them. Very convenient and really didn't cost a lot more than going to the store. We also had milk machines that we used when the kids were older. Milk was available any time of the day or night. Quarters in the slot and the milk carton was dropped into the box, lift the lid and you had milk for the cereal in the am. We actually could have milk delivered in our area now, but, our milk usage isn't that great and we are able to keep our supply in the refrigerator when we need it. Mom really liked having the deliveries and loved those coffee cakes! And she was always the skinny one in the family, go figure!! 3. When we first moved to town in the early 40's, we had a milkman. For a while before my brother went in the navy he was on the truck delivering milk. I found a bottle at an antique store and bought it just because of the home delivery and that he had worked there. I don't remember if it all stopped during WW2 because of the gas and tire shortage or when. I remember the glass bottles. Cream on the top. After we were married there was a dairy close by we could go to and take a gallon jug and get milk. Now I don't think they can sell it like that because of the pasturizing or something like that. Seems like it was 50 cents. That was the early 50's. When we moved to the country, had the cow, we had more milk than we knew what to do with it. Good think we were all skinny. made alot of puddings, with four kids it was eaten, also made ice cream, lots of gravys with things. Thank god only one cow. Also had chickens. Fresh eggs. It was fun. But now just go to the store and buy a plastic thing with the milk. I am glad the kids had the experience of living like that. They had the horses. Raised the calves, experienced death with the animals. Had there pony's. They had fun. That is what it is all about. Louise

    3. Sully, I can’t believe it. We are looking forward to daytime high temps in the 20s and overnight lows in the single digits. And this is for Georgia. I really feel for all those in the northern states looking at daytime highs in the teens – below zero! Tomorrow’s game at Green Bay is predicted to take place in temps no higher than 0, with wind chills as much as 15 below! Just about our whole country is in the very deep freeze. And you are talking of getting this urge to go out and do some gardening!!! California, the very southern region of Texas, and the southern portion of Florida are about the only places that will not be affected by this arctic freeze! Sully, you just don’t know what you are missing! Enjoy those little hummingbirds and butterflies and little yellow roses and flowers in bloom just a little bit more for those of us who would love it if we could do so also!! Donna Peachtree City, GA From: Sullyshirl73@aol.com Sent: Saturday, January 04, 2014 3:25 PM To: memory-lane@rootsweb.com Subject: [ML] Just home, fooling around Good Morning or maybe I should say good afternoon, it's 11:41 AM here. It's bright out side, thinking of maybe doing a little yard work, but than maybe not, I have plenty to do inside here. Went to Kohl's yesterday morning, with my Kohl's money, bought two set of Queen sheets. They are 800 count, a Ivory color,I think I will be very happy with them. When I put them in the washing machine a few minutes ago, they are heavy and yet very soft. I am washing both sets, can't wait to put them on our bed, new sheets, yea !!!! I bought a set of sheets on line early last year, they said they were 1000 count, but they weren't, way to thin, and didn't laundry good. Going to take that set up to the cabin later this year, they will do good up there. All my older sheets, and towels go up to the cabin, I am always thinking if something happens to them, than it will be no loss to me, or at least very little. I went to the web cam up in the little town were our cabin is, and there's no snow up there right now, but they are saying maybe later this week, might get some rain here, and snow up at the cabin. We need rain, every one envies our sun and heat, but there is the other side, drought, and that means a water shortage this summer. I told my husband we need I to start buying mulch, if we have another drought this summer, we will need lots of mulch to keep the water from evaporating from around our plants, because we won't be allowed to water very much !!! I keep telling my husband we need to get rid of the grass in our back yard, plant vegetables instead, kill two birds with one stone, no lawn to mow, and vegetables for the table !!! We planted a new Lemon tree, right in back of our old Lemon tree. A while back we noticed our Lemon tree wasn't doing very good, a tree limb looked like it was dead, we sawed it off, it did good for awhile, now another limb is looking bad, the tree is maybe 25/30 years old, we found a new tree at out local Farmers market a 25 gal, same kind, Eureka Lemon tree, so we bought it, planted it and it's got several Lemons on it now, so when this one goes, we will still have lots of Lemons. I keep getting this urge to go out and work in the garden, but it needs to rest a little from the summer heat, don't like to get out there and prune, and get all the leaves off the ground, I think the ground befits from all the leaves and coolness. I have had to water some, our Avocado tree is blooming again, I think all this heat has made the Avocado tree think it's spring, I hope if it blooms, a big hard rain or hail doesn't come along and knock all the blossoms off. We also have some plants that flowered, lots of Hummingbirds and a few butterflies too. It does look pretty out there, we also have these tiny yellow roses on the arbor, and they started blooming last week, I couldn't believe it, they don't usually bloom till May or June, this heat has every plant out there thinking it's SPRING !!! Making some Chicken and dumplings for dinner, and with what's left will make some Chicken salad. Have a good DAY where ever you are and what ever you do !!! 3. It is not as cold as it was yesterday here-when I got up this morning it was minus4 degrees! The sun did come out and the walks and streets are very messy-mix of slushy snow and sand! I cleaned some and took laundry to our laundry roon(have to go outside to the laundry area here) so tracking sandy stuff in and out-a mess! I have just about had it with winter and it has just started! I once loved snow andcold-but i am old and cranky now and do not like it at all. Laundry done but now I need to vacuum again where it tracked in on wheels of cart and my boots! My sister (younger) is in hospital and besides the bronchial pneumonia they have found she has a viral infection in the lining of the sack around her heart--she had terrible chest pain and discomfort. I just came from her house, took in her mail, straightened up for her (the ambulance took her out early yesterday morning) so her computer and stuff were on and her mailbox was full. Lots of sickness around-seems like I hear a lot of people passing out or fainting in stores. Wonder if ventilation problems or illness-have never heard about so many passing out. I may consider going to visit my youngest son and family in Texas next winter---this cold weather is not for me anymore!!! Sully is so lucky to be in S.California and have fruit trees and green stuff around all year! I have never seen an avacado tree in my life and I love avacado's-can't imagine picking them fresh and eating-must be the best! I know the citrus fruit I get from cousins in AZ. every February off the trees in their yard is unlike anything we can buy here, so fresh, juicy and wonderful citrus smell! Guess I need to get the sand off the floor and put the laudry away!! Have a great weekend!! Helen in snow, ice and messy New England

    1. [ML] SNOW ! Aaarrrggghh!
    2. Got all excited when I saw the frozen flakes a flying...Granny picking her geese, they used to say. I told Bear it sure looked like a person could put a big pan out there and soon have enough to make snow cream...Rattle, rattle, was the next sound I heard as he wrestled a huge pan out from under the sink...Sigh...Went back out to check it later after the skiff of snow fell, and there wasn't enough of the white stuff in there to make a spoonful! Guess the wind blew it all away...Sigh...NOT COMPLAINING, FOLKS! I've already seen enough snow to do me a lifetime, and Breyers is still making ice cream fit for the Squire, last I heard . HAPPY NEW YEAR, Y'ALL ! Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
