My mother LOVED Milk of Magnesia. My sister and I "went" every day or out came the blue glass bottle. To this day I gag just looking at the stuff. Once got into a tiff with a nurse who insisted I take it and I refused. She stamped out and said "I'm going to tell the doctor on you". It struck me as funny and I laughed and my stitches hurt. Isn't it funny how we remember something like that. Don't remember the rest of the incident, but it must have been resolved--I'm not still being held against my will! When I was a youngster, penicillin was sold over the counter. My mom was a nurse and everytime one of us sneezed, Mom would get her needles out and give us a shot. We were talking about this the other day. We remember getting penicillin shots, not oral medication. I remember when I was about 8 or maybe even younger, my grandmother trying to get me to take milk of magnesia. It made me gag, and I spit it out. Grandma was not happy.... So interesting, my brother was born in 1944, when he was a year old he got pneumonia. I would have been close to four years old but I remember how sick he was. The doctor then made house calls and it was the first time anyone had used penicillin in our family. It was liquid, white and chalky looking and my brother hated it-they had to hold him down-I remember it to this day. We thought our parents were hurting him, holding his little arms and legs still and trying to get it in his mouth and swallowed- We were just talking about it the other day. It did make him better-but traumatized me and my sister! Now the flavor it etc. so children take things much easier. Back then meds were yukky!
*JUST IMAGINE.. * * If you had bought $1,000.00 of Qantas shares one year ago, you would have $49.00 today! If you bought $1,000.00 AIG shares one year ago, you would have $33.00 today! If you bought $1,000.00 worth of Lehman Brothers shares one year ago, you would have $0.00 today! BUT.... if you purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then returned the aluminum cans for recycling.... YOU WOULD HAVE RECEIVED $214.00!!! BASED ON THE ABOVE, THE BEST CURRENT INVESTMENT PLAN IS TO DRINK HEAVILY AND RECYCLE! AND,DID YOU KNOW... A recent study found that the average Aussie walks 900 MILES A YEAR!!! Another study found that Aussies drink, on average, 22 GALLONS OF ALCOHOL A YEAR!!! THAT MEANS THAT, ON AVERAGE, AUSSIES GET ..... 41 MILES TO THE GALLON. **MAKES YOU PROUD TO BE AN AUSSIE DOESN'T IT?*
ENJOY !!!!!! *THE BACK NINE* *I FIRST STARTED READING THIS EMAIL & WAS READING FAST UNTIL I REACHED THE THIRD SENTENCE. I STOPPED AND STARTED OVER READING SLOWER AND THINKING ABOUT EVERY WORD. THIS EMAIL IS VERY THOUGHT PROVOKING. MAKES YOU STOP AND THINK.* *PLEASE READ SLOWLY!* *You know ... Time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams.* *But, here it is... The “back nine” of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?* *I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that “I was only on the first hole” and the “back nine” was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like.* *But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting gray...they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change...Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd become.* *Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will... But, at least I know, that though I’m on the “back nine”, I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it's over on this earth... A new adventure will begin! Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime.* *So, if you're not on the “back nine” yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. I should mention the date! Saturday, December 18, 1943 in The Register-Guard (Eugene, OR) Connie This is my stepfather's first cousin. Can you remember when penicillin was this rare? Laddie Robertson Loses Long Fight Against Death After Penicillin Aid Fails Death came Friday night to Laddie Robertson, 13-year-old Springfield boy, who for months has been fighting a strange blood malady which even famed penicillin failed to cure. Twice shipments of the precious drug were rushed from the east, but those did not save the boy, although for several days it appeared as if they would. The “cold” which Laddie was reported as having was, according to his doctor at the Sacred Heart hospital, more fiction than fact. The idea was more or less of a myth to convince the boy that his latest relapse was only temporary. At late as two weeks ago Wednesday Laddie was strong enough to walk, to sit up for 15 minutes in his hospital room, and to eat a trout dinner. The penicillin sent from Baltimore, Md., for the Robertson boy was so far as is known the first shipment to be sent to Oregon. Two parcels of the drug were sent and used through special permission of authorities. Except in special cases, the available supply is reserved for use of the armed forces. The arrival of the first and most urgently needed package was complicated and delayed slightly by confusion in routing it to Eugene. Many persons in the Portland postoffice, as well as United Airlines employees, went to great pains to locate the small parcel. The case caused great public interest and concern for the boy’s welfare. Besides his parent, Mr. and Mrs. Glen L. Robertson of Springfield, he is survived by an older brother, Dale Robertson, and a sister, Berl Robertson, a student at the University of Oregon. Glad to hear everything went good, we don't realize how important our eyes are, till something goes wrong with our vision. I am due to go in next week for routine eye check up, I don't think it's anything special, he just wants to make sure everything is good. There's a lot of flu going around here, several people have died over the last month, and some aren't very old, a man 29 years old died last week, they say it's the H1N1, I think that's the Swine flu. The have a tent out side one hospital, if you think you have the flu, that's where you go, not to the emergency room. They don't want to spread the flu to other people coming into the Emergency room. Scary !!! I am glad I got my flu shot last October, but still don't want to be around anyone with the flu, you just never know ??? We also are having a warm spell, it's going into the 80's, today was beautiful, just right, not to warm. We do need rain, so hope it doesn't stay warm long, needs to cloud up and we need lots of rain. It 9:30 PM here, even with direct TV, I can't find anything worth watching tonight, so I came in here, to my computer room, to see anything more interesting than what's on the TV tonight. !!!! Good night friends, sweet dreams. Sully in Sunny and beautiful California
Well the treatment on my eye went fine and all I notice is that once in a while some small bowling balls pass over but there is no pain but I cannot do my exercises for a few days but that is fine with me. I am lazy by nature anyhow. A few days ago they had us under freeze warnings today it is 85. Holy Cow!!!! Annette.
Sadly the pain just goes on and on. On Jan 10, 2014 2:32 PM, "Doug Crim" <ddcrim@gmail.com> wrote: > happened to me at the bank. Actually it was not funny. Thanks for your sincere concerns and good wishes for my daughter and wouldn't you know, she does have to have more surgery on her arm. I don't know any of the details as to why yet but something did go wrong with the elbow they did put in and she will be having more surgery on Monday. She said she did hear her elbow pop on the second day after her surgery and luckily a nurse was in her room when it happened as she cried out and the nurse heard it too. There is a possibility they put the wrong size in. She's trying to be strong and I will let her know you folks are all pulling for her. When these things happen I wonder why they wait so long to do the surgery? You would think they would go right in before things set in place. I guess I was really lucky years ago, my last day of work at the scale house for weighing in nuts, The roofs get really dusty and when the rain comes it runs off and can get really slippery. I was walking back out at lunch time and going very carefully, woops there I went. lit on my elbow. I think it was because I was carrying papers that went on my elbow. Of course I never think I am hurt so didn't even report it right then. By the time to get off work I couldn't even touch my nose with my hand. So they sent me to the Dr. the next day and I had cracked it or something like that. Don't really remember it has been so long. I think it was in a sling for a while. But feel so bad for your daughter having to wait for all of this again and wondering why it happened. Hospitals aren't the fun places to be. I am beginning to hate them more and more. My husband won't go unless he has no say in it. Like unconcious. good luck. Tell her we are all pulling for her. happened to me at the bank. Actually it was not funny. Let me explain. Sherry had remarkable foresight. She left me all of her passwords and PIN numbers for everything. Almost! We have a bank account at a credit union, actually two of them. One was our personal account and one, she designated a "The ranch" account. Out of this one she paid incidential ranch expenses, taxes, etc. The problem is that we never put my name on the account. Often talked about it but....<sigh> Fortunately, Sherry gave me Power of Attorney (POA) in her will which has been helpful. What I didn't know is that when a person passes, the POA is dead in the water. The bank could care less if I was the designated POA or not. I am slowly getting this problem resolved but it ain't easy. I write this as a word of caution to everyone to NOT let little things slide... They can come back and bite ya!! The Dougster
Maybe.... just went out to feed and release the chickens and lo and behold, I have a HUGE cat in my trap.... when I say HUGE, I mean it... it appears to be wild. This cat must be at least half the size of a Bobcat. I have a neighbor that has and enjoys cats, so I will call her and see if she owns this one. Somehow, I doubt it but it's the least I can do. If it's not hers, I will dispatch and dispose of this cat without reservation. I HATE feral anything! Feral hogs, dogs, cats, etc. Some of you will probably object to my feelings but I can't help that. There is no place in nature for feral cats... That about covers it for me. The Dougster
I truly hope your daughter heals fast. When I awoke the temp in the house was 58. Freezing all day.
