Hello to all. I am new to your list. Last night I went to the archives and read most of the messages on this list. I would like definetly to correspond with a person that had a "Glynda....@aol.com" address that had written some messages in the fall about the nw AR to Milam co area TX Meek families. Her email did not go through when using the auto response from the archive! I first started collecting some stories and some facts about this family in 1963 after marriage. An abbreviated lineage of my husband (and children) will follow. This family did not have factual tales and was relatively nomadic. grandparents are William Henry Meek b 10 Apr 1879 prob Logan co AR. His sibs are Mary, Martha, Joseph Matthew "Joe", Charley ?Albert, Dewitt called both "Dee" or "Wit", J. Thomas, Ruth, and Minnie. I have some details and a few pictures of these persons. Several of the men seemed to be hunters and outdoor/woods persons. William Henry probably had 5 green thumbs. He could start many plants from cuttings or seeds. He died on 2 Dec 1934 in Garland co AR. ggrandparents: Richard Henderson Meek b. 25 Dec 1852/3 prob in Milam co TX. m. 13 Jan 1878 in Logan co AR to Francis C. Robbins d. about 1924 and family tale says at Bowlegs OK. No documentation has been found after a lot of good and bad searching of records in this area. Francis was born 15 Jul 1861 in MO and died with a death certificate on 18 May 1923 in Seattle WA as a widow. So it would appear that he probably died earlier than the persons guess of 1924. This couple came and went excessively compared to farmers! They can be found on the 1880 Logan co AR census, 1900 Montgomery co AR census, and the 1910 Garland co census. It is also believed that they spent some time in Yell co AR, Ardmore OK area. His occupation or means of support is unknown. gggrandparents: George Washington Meek b. ca 1823-24 ?KY m. 16 Apr 1847 to Martha Jane Sims recorded in Pope Co AR (bk A p99). This was the home area for the bride but she had lived in Carroll co AR at the time of the 1840 census. She may have had distant relatives stillin Carroll co AR. The following children are listed for them on the 1850 Milam co TX census Dwelling #503-520. James Henry Meek b 29 Jan 1848 in Choctaw Nation. Martha Jane was supposed to have a brother or uncle that worked at an Indian agency in se OK! George W. Meek b 1849 in AR? - I have no further information on this child. In this household of the census is another couple. He is Richard H. Meek and an appropriate age to be a brother to George Washington Meek (b 1823) but as I recall had a birthplace other than KY. No futher information is known about George Washington Meek (b1823). After the birth of the son Richard Henderson Meek in 1852, Martha Jane Sims Meek with James Henry and Richard Henderson Meek move back to Pope Co AR. She remarried on 6 Nov 1859 a recently widowed man- Alston Hill. He had 7 living children by his first wife and then he and Martha moved to Logan co AR where they had some children before her death 28 Jul 1880. She was buried near Scottsville, Pope Co AR with her parents. It is not known whether George Washington Meek (b1823) died or they got a divorce. Milam co records are destroyed for this time frame. But there is an old man by this name that shows up on the 1880 soundex in southern AR. My one attempt to trace him died with NO further information. Any help with this family is appreciated. I have some census records for nw AR and have read some recent family stories from that area but I have not found the tie that binds! Louise S. Godwin 406 W.
