This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JEB.2ACE/519.2 Message Board Post: I believe that, although there was an earlier Reuben DRINKWATER, born to David & Rachel (FARROW) DRINKWATER 15 Nov 1775, the Reuben that went to Ohio with brother Reuel was a son of Daniel & Rebecca (FISHER) DRINKWATER. I am further making the assumption that the g-g-grandfather of a living person was the one born in 1797 rather than 1775. Vital Records of North Yarmouth, Maine to the Year 1850 (Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Rhode Island); 1980 (republished by Picton Press, Camden, Maine in 1993) lists the birth dates of the children of Daniel and Rebecca (FISHER) DRINKWATER including Reuben born 12 Oct 1797. The entry references the original North Yarmouth town book vol. 2 page 8. These ledgers are what we have for vital records since no birth certificates were issued in those days. Augustus W. Corliss, Old Times of North Yarmouth, Maine (Somersworth, NH: New Hampshire Publishing Company; 1977) states on page 1146 that this Reuben died in Ohio but provides no date or citations. There is a Reuben DRINKWATER on the 1830 Cumberland, Cumberland, Maine census, age 30-40, who appears to be single. There is a Reuben DRINKWATER listed on the 1840 census for Adams, Seneca, Ohio who is between the ages of 40 and 50. In his household is one female between the ages of 15 and 20. He appears on the 1850 census for Adams, Seneca, Ohio, age 53, farmer, born Maine, as Rhewben Drinkwater with the following household, all last name Drinkwater: Sarah, age 27, born Ohio (could be the 15-20 year old in the 1840 census); Rhewben, age 11; Rebecca, age 9; James, age 5; Ruel, age 5; and Catharine, age 2. He appears again in the 1860 Adams, Seneca, Ohio census, age 62, with a housefull of children; Reuben, age 19; James, 15; Ruel, 12; Catherine, 10, Sarah, 8; William, 6; [?]ison, 5. In this household there is also 31 year old Mary Ware keeping house. Her age matches that of the 15-20 year old female in the above 1840 census but does not establish that she is the mother of these children. The adult Sarah from the 1850 census is no longer mentioned. There also appear to be two of Mary's children; Floy Ware, 3; and Haty Ware, 1. All of the children show born in Ohio. (This 1860 census would lead one to believe that Sarah (DRINKWATER) was no longer in the picture after the birth of [A]lison ca. 1855.) He is again in the 1870 Adams, Seneca, Ohio census, age 72, with family; Reuben, 29; Clara, 26 (born MI); Reul, 3 (born MI); Elmer, 7-1/2 months? (born MI); William, 17; Alison, 15. Neither Mary Ware nor any other older woman appears in this household. Next door is Ruel, 22; Emma, 22 (apparently his wife, born in Ohio.) James, 30 is also in Adams living separately with his family; Emma, 27 (born in Ohio; Reuben, 6; June, 3. While his brothers and sisters are listed in the marriage and marriage intentions sections of the North Yarmouth VR book, Reuben does not appear there; perhaps he married elsewhere (Ohio?). The 1850 census shows Sarah, age 27, born Ohio but, although Reuben, Sr.'s children show up in Ohio marriage records, I have not been able to find a marriage record for him. Reul, his brother, born 4 Nov 1885 published intentions to marry Betsy York of Falmouth 27 Jan 1810, later published intentions to marry Deborah Kent of Vinalhaven 10 Jul 1819 and then published intentions to marry Sarah Whitcomb of North Yarmouth 31 Aug 1827. These are on page 151 of the VR book citing the original records 2:29, 2:45 and 2:56 respectively. Reul is listed as a sea captain in his intentions to marry. --Paul Noyes-- http://www.gencircles.com/users/noyes/2
