Hi Maynard, I am not researching either of the two families you mentioned, but my ancestor Josiah Dunn was one of the early settlers of Bakerstown Plantation (now Poland), and I can offer the following: The Poland Centennial produced in 1895 states: "John Nevens was the eldest son of Hugh Nevens, who was of Scotch descent, and came to this country in 1730. He first settled in Gloucester, Mass., where he remained until about 1760, when he removed to New Gloucester, Maine." " His son John, the pioneer settler of this section, was born in Gloucester, Mass. in 1743, and married Mary Pring of the same town in 1767,...." ....."They left a family of five daughters ...." [only two married] "... Mary, born October 2, 1771, married Nathaniel Small, of Minot, now Auburn. They had nine children. She died January 13, 1852. Her husband died in 1824." The booklet mentions Mr. Addison Small, of Lewiston who is a great-grandson of Mr. Nevens as providing many interesting historic papers covering the early settlement of Poland. This Addison would be a grandchild of Mary and Nathaniel Small. I hope this provides some assistance.
