David Laird who was afterwards _______ & the men who were under said LAIRD (I returned to serve during the war) as he believes were placed under Capt. Nathaniel Lamb of the 10th Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. Green of General Wheaton's brigade of Virginia line on continental establishment & that he served two summers in the light infantry commanded by Gen. Wain.. That he served 3 years & about ___ months & was taken prisoner by Lord Cornwallis at Charlestown & remained a prisoner about 14 or 15 days I made escape & returned to ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VIRGINIA & reported himself to Col. Wood who then commanded the barracks of said County.. who gave him ____ until his company was exchanged who was also taken prisoners __ ____; he states that the exchange did not take place (to his knowledge) before the close of the war.. He afterwards came to the County of MONROE where he has been a resident for at least 9 YEARS.. he further states that he is in reduced circumstance in life & needs the assistance of his County for support. Value of Property, $269.00. 1841 Sep 20 - Monroe Co, VA - On this day, FRANCES MEADOWS a resident of said County of Monroe, aged 69 or 70 years personally appeared before the Justices of the County Court - who made oath in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by Act of Congress passed July the 7th, 1838 entitled "An Act Granting half pay and Pensions to certain widows" That she is the widow of FRANCIS MEADOWS DECEASED who was a soldier in the Revolution and who was a pensioner before his death and who resided in the county of Monroe at the time of obtaining said Pension and so resided until his death.. she further declares that she was MARRIED TO SAID FRANCIS MEADOWS in the fall of the year 1791 which she can not certainly recollect as no record of the same was kept.. she was married in the COUNTY OF ROCKINGHAM, VIRGINIA.. that her husband the aforesaid FRANCIS MEADOWS DIED ON 20 DAY of NOVEMBER 1836.. that she was not married to him previous to his leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to the first day of JANUARY 1794, Viz, at the time above stated.. /s/ FRANCES (x) MEADOWS.. This day FRANCES MEADOWS, WIDOW OF FRANCIS MEADOWS, DEC'D who was a Pensioner of the U.S. personally appeared in open Court & proved by satisfactory evidence that she was married to said FRANCIS MEADOWS in the County of Rockingham, Virginia about the year 1790.. that she kept no family record of the marriage - it also appears by the EVIDENCE OF ELIZABETH FISHER (end of page). 1938 March 15 - Letter to UMBURTO MEADOWS, 417 Ninth Street, Huntington, West Virginia from the War Department regarding the Revolutionary War records of FRANCIS, JOHN and WILLIAM MEADOWS of Rockingham and Monroe County, Virginia: "FRANCIS MEADOWS enlisted in Augusta County, Virginia sometime in February 1777; served as a private in Captains David Laird's and Lamme's companies, in Colonel Green's 10th Virginia Regiment; he was taken prisoner at Charleston and held 14 or 15 days, when he made his escape and was exchanged at the close of the war; length of service, 3 years and 3 months. He was allowed pension on his application executed 16 June 1818 at when time he was aged about 64 years and living in Monroe County, Virginia where he had lived about 9 years. The soldier Francis Meadows married in the fall of year 1790 or 1791 in Rockingham County, Virginia to FRANCES BUSH. He died 20 November 1836 in Monroe County, VA. The widow FRANCES MEADOWS was allowed pension on her application executed 20 Sept 1841 at which time she was aged about 70 years and a resident of Monroe County.
