    3. I just found in my copy of "Our Meador Families in Colonial America" by Victor P. Meador and Bernal M. Meador (1986), page 39. It states "When Richard Awbrey (the one the first email was about) made his will, which was probated October 11, 1697, he named John Meador as 'brother.' Considerable speculation has arisen about the exact nature of this relationship. Some have said that John Meador (for his second wife) could have married a daughter of Henry Awbrey and thus a sister to Richard. No such daughter of Henry Awbrey has been documented. Another speculation has been that Richard's wife, Dorothy was a sister of John Meador. Nor has such a sister been found. In actuality, Richard's wife was Dorothy North, daughter of Augustine North. Sources given: For will (Essex Co. Deeds, etc. No. 9, p. 127) For Richard's wife as Dorothy North ("Winstons of Virginia") by Clayton Torrence, p. 174) I hope this helps. It shows and documents that the ancestor was not a Dorothy Meador but a Dorothy North, daughter of Augustine and Dorothy North. I have more information on Dorothy north and her 2nd and 3rd husbands. If you truly believe she was Dorothy Meador, please send me your lineage. Patrick Cuff Patrick Cuff wrote: > The Dorothy Meador you speak of is my 8th great aunt. 3. In Our Meador Families of Colonial Virginia, p 37-38, Victor goes into quite a bit of speculation and stating of facts regarding property that was owned by Thomas Meads (son of Thomas)and Thomas Meador (son of Ambrose Meador) in regard to Sarah who married Henry Awbrey. That is all really for another discussion as I am not ready to accept that Thomas Meades is the father of Sarah's son, John Sr. However, the point I wanted to make is that on p. 39 he states the following: "It appears quite certain that Richard Awbrey was the son of Sarah, because in a deed in 1675 Henry gave his son Richard a year-old mare called 'Bonny until said Richard be 14 years of age.' Thus, Richard would have been born after 1661-1662, when Henry and Sarah were apparently married." I have found the following information: The Power of Attorney below shows that they were married by 1664. In April of 1662, she still shows up in the records as Sarah Meador when she is given guardianship of her orphan children. This, as Victor implies, would indicate that John Meador Sr. was half-brother to Richard Awbrey and the reason that he was referred to as "brother" in Richard's will. Feb 27, 1664 Be it known unto all men that I Henry Awberry of Hoskins Creek in the County of Rappa. which is in Virga. have made & in my stead constituted my welbeloved wife Sarah Awbry my true and lawful Attorney irrevocable for me & in my name & to my use to ask & receave all & singular such debts sums of money of tobacco as are or shall be due unto me sd Henry Awbrey by any person whatsoever giveing unto my sd Attorney for me & in my name to answethe suit or complaint of any persons that shall be commenced agst me & upon trial thereof to satifie & discharge taking sufficient discharges for teh same likewise giving my sd Attorney full power for me to sue arrest implead condemn & imprizon every persons as are or shall be indebted unto me & at her will & pleasure such persons out of Prizon to deliver & upon receipt of any Sums of Money or Tabacco to my use to be received of any persons as aforesaid acquittances or other lawfull discharges to make seale & deliver & every other thing which shall be requisite to be done about the premises the same to do as fully as I my self might do if I were there personally present holding firme & stable all & whatsoever my sd Attorney shall do about the premises Given under my hand this 27th day of February 1664. Witnesses: John Gregory John Awbrey Ralph Fletcher Also, you will note that Richard Awbrey in his will named Phillip McGuire and his sister (Richard's) Susanna as legatees as well as John Meador Sr. Susanna was Susanna Meador, John's sister and Phillip McGuire was her second husband. Her first husband was John Evans. Richard Awbrey was God father to her daughter, Elizabeth Evans. Anyway, it would appear that the connection really is totally through Sarah's marriage to Henry. My question is the documentation that Sarah was Sarah Hoskins? I haven't researched that part and would appreciate the information. 3. Hello Patrick, I am a descendant of Richard Awbrey & his wife via their daughter Dorothy Awbrey who married John Wright s/o Major Francis Wright & Anne Washington. I would like to see more of what you have on the lady who appears to be my new 8th great grandmother....Dorothy North ? I've been wondering why Dorothy Meador showed up on some charts and not others as a daughter of Thomas Meadors . I also saw a report that said Sarah Hoskins first married Thomas Meadors (father of Dorothy Meadors) and 2nd married Henry Awbrey (father of Richard Awbrey)...which would have made a marriage between the two half-siblings totally unacceptable in terms of canon law and probably unacceptable in terms of civil law of the time as well. Thank you for posting this......malinda Patrick Cuff wrote: > I just found in my copy of "Our Meador Families in Colonial America" by > Victor P. Meador and Bernal M. Meador (1986), page 39.
