    1. [ME-CIVIL-WAR] Burial Location
    2. Rose Haley
    3. Normally, a good place to find the burial location of a Civil War Soldier is the SONS OF UNION VETERANS OF THE CIVIL WAR GRAVES REGISTRATION DATABASE AT www.suvcwdb.org I checked, and, although Hiram H Roberts of the 28th Maine is not listed, his brother Lewis is listed. Lewis Roberts of the 28th Maine Company H is buried in the Longfellow Cemetery on Machias Road in Machias, Maine which is in Washington County. He enlisted 10 October,1862 and was discharged on 10 July,1864. If brother Hiram was brought home, he may be in the same cemetery. If you find Hirams actual location, would you please notify me as to where he is buried. Thank you. Frank Haley SUVCW National Graves Registration Committee mimida@comcast.net

You can order his pension records from the NARA. The complete packet, for $75, will include all records, up to 100 pages. The cheaper small packet would include only about 8 pgs. at most and you'd possibly be missing out on much important information. H Maine 19th Vol.Infantry, applied for, and received a civil war pension (according to his civil war pension card). You probably could get a lot of information from his pension records (though probably not his burial place). You can order his pension records from the NARA. The complete packet costs $75, and I suggest you order that. It would contain all records in his pension file, up to 100 pages. The cheaper small packet would only contain 6-8 pgs. at most, and you could miss out on some important information. To order go to: www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/pre-ww-1-records.html You can then download and print out Form NATF 85. - In '04 I ordered the records of my gggrandfather Pvt. John LEWIS, of the 133rd NY Vol Infantry. I received a ton of information, the proverbial "Mother Lode" (not everyone is so lucky). It included his death record from the army reg. hospital in La. in 1863, his marriage record, his 3 daughters' birth dates and baptismal information and much much more. I was able to get important information about the family that I wouldn't have gotten anywhere else. Again, not everyone's so lucky, but it's usually well worth the try. I ordered the records of the ancestor of 2 of my friends, and they also received tons of information and were thrilled. According to the pension card there was no application for a pension from Frank's widow, so either she died first, or never applied (I'm assuming he was married and a direct ancestor of yours; maybe I'm wrong). Good luck, whatever you decide to do. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. One thing that might interest you is that there were 4 Clark brothers from Sangerville in the Civil War. Charles Amory Clark was in the 6th Maine Infantry, and received the Medal of Honor for his service. The link where we found that was actually about the sale of a "camp box, belonging to 1st Lt. Franklin "Frank" Atherton Clark, Company E, 1st Maine Heavy Artillery." It was sold to someone - the site records the value of things. But it also includes the information about Charles A., and other information. The link is: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/identified-officers-camp-box-1st-maine-heavy As to documents, we also found a link with some very badly scanned information from a book publihed in 1890. Most of the errors in it are from bad character recognition in the scan, and isn't too hard to clean up. The link for it is: http://www.ebooksread.com/authors-eng/lake-city-publishing-company/portrait-and-biographical-album-of-polk-county-iowa-containing-full-page-portr-eka/page-90-portrait-and-biographical-album-of-polk-county-iowa-containing-full-page-portr-eka.shtml I don't know the focus of your interest, but if you have additional information about the Clark family, we'd be interested. 2. I found a U.S. Civil War Draft Record, 1863-1865 for my 2nd ggf - residence: East Machias, Maine. Can anyone explain the information on the certificate to me? It says Class: 2 Congressional District: 5th Age on 1 July 1863: 43 Place of Birth: Maine It says in the handwritten that he was a Seaman and in the Remarks section it says "at sea". He was a Master Mariner for the Talbot line. Does the remarks mean that he was excused or accepted? Thank you, Carol Reed Kennedy

The family is all in Liberty- not Freedom. The family bible states he died in 1863 Nov 14 in New Orleans. I did look at the Charles I listing because Ancestry seems to show the same info for Charles E from Liberty. I went on footnote and looked at the physical pages and it shows he resigned due to health issues in Beaufort SC. But those seem clear to be Charles I...although the last one shows Feb of 1863 as a date so he could have headed to New Orleans since his brother was there. I would love to see any info you have on William...he died in New Orleans from his wounds received at Port Hudson, LA.- 28 June 1863. infor given to me is he has a marker at Chalmette Natl Cem and record shows buried in Hunt Cem in Liberty, Waldo, ME. I am hoping someone will do a lookup at that cem to see if Charles is there and any info on his grave... Author: 42ness Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.Military.united-20-states.civwar.uscwme.civilwar/152.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Perhaps there is a mix-up. There WERE two men named "Charles Davis" and both served in the Union army. Charles E. Davis (enlisted from Freedom) served in Company A of the Maine 20th Infantry; he was discharged (as disabled) on 26 Jan 1863. According to his enlistment information, he was 18 years old--which would make his DOB circa 1844, He probably is the Charles E. Davis (born c. 1845) who appears in Freedom in the household of Daniel Davis. Charles I. Davis (enlisted from Liberty) served in Co. H of the Maine 8th Infantry; US Colored Troops 33rd Infantry, Co. F of the 39th Illinois Infantry and--finally--the Veteran Reserve Corps. According to his enlistment information, he was 23 years old on 7 Sep 1861 which would make his DOB circa 1838. He probably is the Charles Davis (born c. 1836) who appears in Liberty in the household of Elbrige Davis. He applied for an invalid pension in 1889 (filing from Maine); his widow applied for a Widow's pension in 1920. He was in Liberty at the time of the 1890 Vets Schedule and appears in census records there until 1920. Neither man is likely to have been in New Orleans in the course of duty based on the location of their regiments although it is possible for the younger man (the one from Freedom) to have gone there after his discharge. Incidentally, there were TWO William Davises from Freedom, as well--but it is likely that they are the same man. William Davis enlisted in 1861 in Co. F of the Maine 4th Infantry and was discharged less than a month later with consumption. William C. Davis enlisted in October of 1862 in Company B of the Maine 26th Infantry. He was hospitalized in New Orleans in April of 1863. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The same with his brother William - found their enlistment info but not a thing further. A tree here on ancestry had them both dead in 1863 in New Orleans which I think may only be true for William. I believe there is another Charles in Freedom...I saw that record in a 1860 census and my Charles in Liberty. I did find his enlistment from Liberty...but that is all I could find. And trust me I spent HOURS looking and reading may online posts> At least I have found the 2 regiments files roll and page numbers on microfilm from the nation archives. I didn't recognize the name "Charles Elbridge Davis from Liberty--but I found him enlisting from the neighboring town of Freedom. He was discharged as disabled on 26 January 1863 (several months before Gettysburg)--reason not given; it is more likely to have been disease than war casualty. If he was disabled, it is possible that he filed for an invalid pension; if you know that he was alive in 1890, you can check the 1890 schedule. His Civil War name was "Charles E. Davis". In order to "flesh out" the brothers, why not check for a local historical society--or even the local library. The Davis family of central Maine is significant so why not check for publications, on-line bulletin boards, etc.? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
