    3. Hi Jeff; Maine Cemetery Inscriptions:Kennebec County were published in 1999. Here is a John, probably the father: p. 356 Forest Grove Cemetery in Augusta Richards, John A. 30 Nov. 1821-9 Feb 1872 [51] Lucia Bradford, his wife, 10 June 1825-25 Sept. 1898. I believe that the no. [51] in the square brackets indicates the lot number in the cemetery. Best wishes, Dana Edgecomb Standish, Maine At 07:45 PM 1/3/02 +0100, you wrote: >Could some kind soul out there (and I know there are many of you) check >the 1860 Maine census for Kennebec county for John A. 3. Dear Dana, Thanks so much. The John A. married to Lucia is unfortunately a different John A. from the one I am looking for. The reason I was hoping for an 1860 entry is that I couldn't find one in the ancestry.com index (they list 61 John Richards in the Maine censuses from 1800-90, and the ones that I'm focusing on were nos. 21-30 for Kennebec Co.). I pulled up the 1850 census image at ancestry.com for Hallowell, Maine (p. 187) and there is John Richards, aged 31, married to Lavinia, 31, with their three lovely children: Emma, Emerly and John A. John A. is aged two, just as I had expected. So far, so good. So I did a parent search at familysearch.com for John Richards and Lavinia, and up popped the first two daughters of the couple, Emma P., Emerly B., much as I expected, but no John A. What seems to be a first child, named Edwin, born 1841, also popped up, and I assume he died as a child. Down the list of children of John and Lavinia is a John Edwin Richards, also born in 1848, but in Cumberland, not in Hallowell, Maine. So I'm confused. The December 1863 Hallowell marriage record in the IGI for John A. Richards and Nancy E. Allard fits the John A. in 1850 census. I haven't looked at the 1860 census results -- though nothing came up for any Richards in Hallowell on ancestry.com's index. So, like I said, I am confused. Kind souls, out there, help! And thanks for your help. 3. Jeff- I'm not sure if you've seen these two entries, perhaps he was in a different township. I pulled these up in the ancestry.com AIS census index. Hope it helps, Nancy, Ont. All censuses taken after 1920 are still confidential and the information they contain is not open to the public. The census from 1790 through 1840 only named the head of the household and the numbers of people in categories - 3 males over 16, 2 males under 16, etc. The census from 1850 through 1920 lists each member of the household and usually gives the relationship to the head of the house. It also gives age (later years give birth month and year) and place of birth (usually just the state or foreign country). The 1890 census was almost totally destroyed by fire so there is a 20 year gap between 1880 and 1900. ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237
