    1. [ME-CENSUS] 1870/Oxford/Richards
    2. E. J. Richards
    3. Dear Maine Census Looker-upers, I am trying to track down a John Albert Richards, who -- I think -- was the son of Jarvis Richards and his wife Elizabeth Leah, nee Barnard. I have a strange entry from 1880 that gives a John, aged 21, "at school" and I think something might have been amiss, because the IGI entry for this John Richards gives a birthdate "about 1865" -- which in turns fits John Albert Richards, my g-grandfather's birthday on 25 Oct 1865. On his death certificate Maine is listed as the birth place. The reason I think that something is amiss is that I also have an 1880 census entry in Fresno Co., California (where John Richards actually ended up), which gives a John Richards aged 16, born in NH, although there are no John Richards born there in 1864 or 65. I know that this is a long shot, but any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Jeff Richards ----- Original Message ----- From: <Riwilak@aol.com> To: <ME-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 28, 2001 2:07 PM Subject: Re: [ME-CENSUS] John Richards, again > Jeff - I hope your brick wall has really fallen. 3. Dear Barbara, Thank you for all your time. I found the Richards of Andover, but not John E., born 1869 (oh boy is this getting complicated!). I will keep plugging away. And my hopes for your husband's speedy recovery. 2. E. J. Richards
    3. Thank you very much. Is there any way of checking earlier census reports for Mexico, Oxford County, Maine? Jarvis and Elizabeth Richards were living in Mexico in 1870 -- is the 1870 census accessible for them as well, just to see how old John would have been at that time? Again, thanks so much. My brick wall seems to have fallen. If it's appropriate, then I would like to give you a big cybernetic hug of thanks. 1. [ME-CENSUS] Re: John Bartlett of Maine born 1803
    2. Greetings, This is my first posting so hope I am doing this correctly. I ma doing research on my Bartlett family and have reached a wall. Have been able to get back to my g,g,g grandfather John Bartlett. Information I have is that he was born in Mt Vernon, Maine in 1803 and married Climena Lyons in 1821. I have not been able to find names of John's parents anywhere. I have not checked the census. I do know that later they lived in Mattawamkeag and Medway area and are both buried in Mattawamkeag, Maine. My line is as follows: John married Climena, his son Timothy, married Marie McNutt (also have information showing her last name was Wiggins and/or Merritt), Timothy's son,Jerome (married Josephine York) and Jerome's son,Fuller, married Barbara Baldwin. Would you be able to look in the census and see if this John is listed and if his parents names would be there? Thanks you so much for any help and I am very willing to share any information I have on this line to anyone else that might be searching. Carole Bartlett Foss

    1. Re: [ME-CENSUS] John Richards, again
    2. Jeff - try this: 1. Go to google.com 2. Type in "Oxford County" and genealogy If you search down through the listings that google shows you will find (I think it was on the second page) a Richards of Andover family history. Andover is right near Mexico. It has a ton of information, including John E Richards b 1869. I didn't go further, because it's time for me to go visit my hubby in a rehab center. Let me know how you make out. Let's hope the walls really come tumbling down! Barbara

    2. Jeff - I hope your brick wall has really fallen. It is so exciting when that happens. Unfortunately I do not have any of the census info except for 1880. Maybe if you were to re-post using 1870/Oxford/Richards as the subject line, somebody will pick it up. I believe only the index is available, but it would be a start! Good luck, and if I can help further, please let me know. Barbara

    1. [ME-CENSUS] Re: John Richards, again
    2. E. J. Richards
    3. Dear Maine Census look up, dear Barbara, I now have the death certificate for my g-grandfather, and his full name was John Albert Richards, date of birth 25 October 1865, place of birth Maine. In the census lookup which you provided me (which is included below), there is a John Richards (John E., to be sure), listed as being 21. I upgraded my ancestry.com membership to view the original census image, but alas, there are still some bugs in the system, and I couldn't zoom in on the page to read the handwriting. In the IGI at familysearch.com this John Richards is given as the son of Jarvis and Elizabeth with a birthdate as "around 1865". Everything would fit except the age "21" given in the census. But, alas, there is another complication: In the 1880 California census there is a John Richards listed in Fresno County as being age 16 and having as his birthplace "New Hampshire." I am trying to get information about John Richards in New Hampshire, but it hasn't quite worked out yet. So I have two John Richards in 1880 that are the candidates for my g-grandfather, the one in Maine, age 21, and the other in California, age 16, originally from New Hampshire. Any advice or help you might be able to give would be much appreciated. And many thanks in advance for your previous help as well. Maybe this brick wall will finally fall... 2. Jeff: Here is the California John Richards. It evidently was a very large farm, since it covers more than this one page. 1. [ME-CENSUS] Welcome Letter
    2. Census Lookup
    3. PLEASE READ AND PRINT OUT this entire message before you post a message to XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to"digest mode" are given below. 1. Purpose. The XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L list is for lookup requests from the Federal and State census, all years. 2. To UNSUBSCRIBE: Send a message to: XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains in the body of the message the command "unsubscribe" (no quotation marks) and NO additional text or signature lines. (If you have difficulty removing your signature lines, you can put the word "quit" on the line after "unsubscribe"). If your E-mail address goes bad or your mailbox fills up, you'll be automatically unsubscribed by the mailing list software after the fourth message in a row bounces back to RootsWeb. 3. To SUBSCRIBE: Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe"to XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com. 4. To change to DIGEST MODE (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "subscribe" to XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving the digest. Second, send the command "unsubscribe" to XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. 5. How to change to NOMAIL mode: There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 6. TO POST a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to: XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. DON'T send it explicitly to both mailing lists. 7. The custodian of the XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L list is Kelly Courtney-Blizzard censuslookup@hotmail.com. If you have problems getting subscribed/unsubscribed from the list or have any other difficulties with the list, write to me (not to the list) and I'll try to resolve the problem. 8. Even if you decide not to save this message, please try to remember that, like all the CENSUS-L-LOOKUP lists at RootsWeb, the subscribe and unsubscribe messages go to XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com, not to the XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com list itself. If such messages do appear on the list, I'll manually subscribe or unsubscribe the person, though. 9. The mailing list is presently installed at rootsweb.com, which is the home of the RootsWeb. See http://www.rootsweb.com for information about RootsWeb. It's not necessary to pay anything to subscribe to any of its surname mailing lists. 10. Message format and attachments. Subject lines should be "YR/SURNAME/COUNTY". Please submit messages only in plain text (no HTML), and don't submit attachments or hyperlinks. Many of our subscribers are using software that cannot read attachments hyperlinks sometimes cause messages to be bounced back. ONLY ONE SURNAME per request! Please, always use a helpful subject line like "1880/STEWART/Saginaw Co", rather than a generic one like "inquiry about Stewart family". 11. Copyrights. Any person sending a message to this list retains the copyright to it. By sending the message, you grant to the list custodian, and to his heirs and assigns forever, permission to distribute copies of the message to other list members, to store archival copies of the message, and to make the archival copies available to the Internet community at large. You also grant to other list members the right to quote your message in part or in total as a part of their replies sent back to the list. 12. No-nos. Please DO NOT submit virus alerts, chain letters, or other off-topic material to the list. Don't send copies of copyrighted material. Vulgarity and personal attacks on other list members are also unwelcome. Don't send messages exceeding 8 kilobytes in length. If someone else violates these rules, please do not send their message back to this list! That just magnifies the problem, and defeats our anti-spam defenses at Rootsweb. 13. "Please" and "Thank You" are always welcome! When thanking someone for a lookup, please email that person directly, do not post to the list. 14. For your verification, a transcript of the original subscription request is included below. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

The year is 1870 In Bethel Maine. Addie Ward/Smith was born in May of 1869 to the parents of Osmond & Mary Ward/Smith. When she was 13 her parent moved to Scarborough. I am so sorry about the mix up. 3. In the 1875 census for Kansas, my Joel Prince and son Benjamin Franklin Prince (Frank) and Joel's second wife, Eliza are found and listed as coming directly from Michigan. Their ages in 1875 were 49, 24 and 36 years. The first wife's name was Hannah E.________ born 1829-30. She was about 10 years older than Eliza. Joel, Frank and Hannah were born in Maine. Joel and Frank were railroad employees and I think they may have come down the St. Lawrence Seaway, following the railroads. I do not know where they were in Michigan, but it would probably be near railroad lines. Joel was born 2 Feb 1825/6, Benjamin Franklin Prince in 1852, Hannah was 21 in the 1850 census for ME and 31 in the 1860 census for WI. I don't know where Hannah and Frank were from 1862-1865 while Joel was in the Union Army for the Civil War. I would appreciate any information or location ideas for them in the 1870 census or any other sources.
