    1. [ME-CENSUS-LOOKUP] Re: CURLING/ Knox County
    2. dianne soares
    3. WOW! MaryAnn this is fantastic and WAY beyond my expectations--how on earth did it occur to you to look for him in Rhode Island? I wasn't sure if he ever left Thomaston as he is buried there (alone). I would love the info on the Warrens, although I have to say I'm hesitant to ask you to do MORE as what you have provided is so great (and very appreciated). This family is a bear to research and it's been a long time without new information --you have provided a tremendous amount here for us to verify--we didn't know his spouse's name (first or maiden) didn't know the date he married --didn't know he resided in R.I. and would never have thought he would be a "tinsmith." He comes from a line of master mariners. This also seems to straighten out the confusion with his name (a prior census has him as Forrest F. Curling--headstone as Frank F. Curling). THANK YOU very very much for your work on this. dianne P.S. please excuse a dumb question --does this mean you looked the Curling family I requested up in the Knox County 1910 census and did not find them? Or does it mean you looked in the census' you have(Not Knox Co, Me.) and this is what you came up with? I only ask so as to keep straight in my head what records have been searched etc. ----- Original Message ----- From: Malgren@aol.com To: ME-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com ; pals@goldrush.com Sent: Wednesday, April 10, 2002 6:49 AM Subject: Re: CURLING/ Knox County Hi Dianne ~ I believe the below might be your Frank and Ardell's son, Frank :) ~Maryann~ ============================== Frank F. 1. [ME-CENSUS-LOOKUP] Bangor (Penobscot Co.), 1850+, Tompkins
    2. Allan J. Tompkins
    3. I seek information on family of Jacob Tompkins and Rachel Amelia Graves in Bangor, Maine. I've been told that they were in the 1850 and 1860 census records with sons Oscar and Charles. Can someone please confirm the actual census details for me, and perhaps check later censuses for ongoing information on descendants. I was also told that Oscar died in Bangor on 13 December, 1920 so there may well be entries for him in the later census years. Many thanks in advance for any assistance given. Regards, Allan J. 2. I also have Tompkins in my line so I asked one the people in my group if he had anything on your Jacob. Below is his reply. Maureen in Bangor Maine Hi Maureen: I don't think any thing will be found on Jacob. I believe he died in New Brunswick. Son Oscar with his mother came to Bangor, when I don't know. Here is what I have. Start with the 1900 census and go back from there. I don't remember if the 1900 census will tell you when they cross the line. Jacob Tompkins b. 21 Mar 1817 Woodstock, Carleton Co., New Brunswick, Canada, son of Jacob Tompkins and Nancy Connor He married Rachel Amelia Graves 18 Jul 1847. Rachel Amelia Graves b. 1825 d. 16 Mar 1908 Bangor, Penobscot Co. Maine, burial Mount Hope Cem., Bangor, Maine daughter of Samuel Grave and Rebecca. Children: Oscar A. Tompkins b. 1848 New Brunswick, d. 13 Dec 1920 Bangor, Penobscot Co. Maine, burial Mount Hope Cem. Bangor, Maine Charles Tompkins b. 1850 New Brunswick, Canada This is all I have. Don

Again, I have so litttle info, anything at all is great to me. Tracy in NC ==== ME-CENSUS-LOOKUP Mailing List ==== In the U.S., a census has been taken every 10 years from 1790 through 1990. All censuses taken after 1920 are still confidential and the information they contain is not open to the public. The census from 1790 through 1840 only named the head of the household and the numbers of people in categories - 3 males over 16, 2 males under 16, etc. The census from 1850 through 1920 lists each member of the household and usually gives the relationship to the head of the house. It also gives age (later years give birth month and year) and place of birth (usually just the state or foreign country). The 1890 census was almost totally destroyed by fire so there is a 20 year gap between 1880 and 1900. ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237

    2. dianne soares
    3. I would love to find information in the 1910 census for Knox County, city of Thomaston, for CURLING Frank F. and wife Ardell B. they would be approximately 58 and 57 years old. There might be an entry for their son,Frank Forrest CURLING or possibly Forrest Frank Curling--there is confusion about his first and middle names. He would be about 33 years old. This might be a separate household or part of the family of Frank (Sr.) and Ardell above. Thanks in advance for any effort made on my behalf. dianne soares pals@goldrush.com

    3. Hi, Allan. This one almost got past me because of an error in the index to my CD (Family Tree Maker CD#454), but I found the people you're looking for in 1850. I don't have ready access to 1860. The entry is on (stamped) page 21 for Bangor, lines 17 to 22, and the CD indicates that the Bangor listings are on NARA microfilm #264. The information is as follows, and the spelling is as it appears on the census page. Jacob Thompkins, age 35, male, (appears to be) merchant, born in N.B. (presumably New Brunswick, Canada). Rachel Tompkins, age 25, female. The birthplace is unclear but appears to be a two-letter abbreviation starting with M (maybe N, but it looks more like M to me). It might be Me. (Maine) but other nearby entries have the entire word "Maine" spelled out. It does not appear to be Mass. (Massachusetts), N.H. (New Hampshire), N.B. (New Brunswick), or N.S. (Nova Scotia). The same abbreviation shows up quite frequently in the surrounding pages, so it's presumably a nearby location; I just can't make it out. I'd be happy to send you an image of the page off-list if you think that would help. Otherwise perhaps the birthplaces will be clearer on the 1860 census. Oscar Tompkins, age 2, male, born in " (same place as Rachel above). Charles Tompkins, age 3/12, " (male), born in ". Rebecca Graves, age 47?, female, born in N. Scotia. Rachael Young, age 77?, " (female), born in N.F.? (definitely an N, likely an F, possibly an abbreviation for Newfoundland?). I see no other Graves or Tompkins entries on the same page, the preceding page, or the succeeding page. For what it's worth, I have a friend with the surname Graves who hails from Old Town, which is very close to Bangor, maybe 4 miles away. I don't know if he's traced his Graves line back at all. I hope this helps. Ruy Cardoso --- "Allan J. Tompkins" <tompkins@ozemail.com.au> wrote: > I seek information on family of Jacob Tompkins and > Rachel Amelia Graves in > Bangor, Maine. 3. I checked the 1850 Census and found your family in Atkinson which is in Piscataquis County Maine: Family #102: Plyn Clark (not sure of that first name) 59 farmer $800 born Vt Deliverance Clark 59 f born Maine E. H. Clark 20 m farmer born Maine (Geo) or G H Clark ( again not sure) 14 m born Maine Mary Eldridge 89 f born Maine I assume Mary was the mother of Deliverance I don't think you will find Edwin on the earlier censuses as he would be a minor but maybe you can find his dad. 2. Betsy, I tried to find your family on the 1900 census film but couldn't find them there. However the film gets really dark towards the bottom and is illegible. I own the CD set for the 1880 census so I looked there and I think I have found them. They lived in Woodland Maine (Aroostook County, the other Woodland is really Baileyville) It says: Petterson, Anders age 34 from Old Sweden Anna age 26 from Denmark Alma age 3 John 5 months. Hope this helps. Maureen in Maine
