    1. John Richards, again
    2. E. J. Richards
    3. Dear Maine-Look-Up-List, In the IGI, I found a John Richards who might be my John Richards. According to the IGI entry, one John Richards was born "about 1865" in "Of, Mexico, Oxford, Maine". His parents were Jarvis William Richards and his mother Elizabeth Leah Bernard. There are more complete IGI entries for Jarvis and Elizabeth. If this John were born in 1865, then he would have been twenty when he married my great-grandmother, then only eighteen herself. The approximate birth date seems to indicate that this son was something of a lost sheep in the family, since there is another brother for whom very complete listings are given -- and I suspect that this lost sheep might be my brick wall, if you'll excuse the mixed metaphors. Could someone please look up this John? What does the geographical abbreviation "Of, Mexico, Oxford, Maine" mean? Again, for all your help, thanks. And just in case you are ever in Muenster, Germany (north of Duesseldorf, near the Dutch border, beautiful city of 300,000), feel free to look me up. 3. Ethelind, Thank you so much. Whether he is mine or not I don't know, but at least we have a Peter in CT in the correct timeframe. 2. Jeff: Mexico is a Town in the County of Oxford, in the State of Maine. Here is Dad, Mom, sisters and brothers. Also John, but it shows him as age 21 and going to school! Maybe in College/University, or maybe a typo error in translation, or error on part of the census taker. But it looks like a good bet that you have found your errant boy. 1. Peter J/T McCarthy
    2. Susan
    3. Hi Barbara, If you have the 1880 census for Ct in your collection I could use some help. My great uncle Peter J. or T. McCarthy has been pretty kind from 1900 onward with his census info, but from birth until then is pretty much a blank. (Not sure if the initial is a J or a T.) On his Chicago 1900 census he states that he was born in Ct in 1860 and that his parents were both born in NY state. I was recently in Ct with my husband but where we were staying did not have census info. However, it was suggested that I should try to track him down in the 1880 census, where he should appear to be 20 years. Of course he could have been in IL by then. Unfortunately, I have not found Chicago's records to be very organized. They are in 11 separate locations and no one seems to know what the other has. There is not a cross index. It seems that he and his wife Mary Ralston were probably md about 1893, but no idea of the location. He was a bar tender or an Inn Keeper (my mom thought he ran a restaurant). I am not sure how the 1880 census records are organized. If there is a national index, that would be great. But if something shows up in the Ct 1880 census that would be fine. Thanks for your time and generosity. 1. Helpful info for doing lookups
    2. I have done several 1880 census lookups on this and other census-lookup sites. Often there is nothing but a name. Other information such a date of birth, place of birth, ethnicity (Asian, Black, Mexican, Mulatto, Native American, White, or unknown) can narrow down a search. County where the person lived at the time of the census, if known is a bonus. Names of siblings or children often lead to a "find" when a name is slightly different. Additionally, it would be appreciated if no more than 2 or 3 actual lookups at a time are requested. Most of us volunteers are grateful for the opportunity to give back to the genealogy community because we have received so much. However, we do have personal priorities. Thank you for your consideration. Barbara

    1. Re: THOMPSON/Lincoln or Sagadahoc/1880
    2. This is the only James Thompson in Maine in 1880. I guess Maggie could be Mary and Annie could just have a different middle initial. Is it possible that James and Maggie had another son after 1880; he then died; Mr. Munsey adopted Annie, but the "new" James kept the Thompson name to carry on the heritage? Do you have any estimated dates for any of your people - birth, death, etc.? 1880 Census Place: Boothbay, Lincoln, Maine Source: FHL Film 1254483 National Archives Film T9-0483 Page 373B Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace James S.
