Hi all, I'm looking for the following family which I believe to have been in Portland in 1920. All ages are approximate and would be as of 1920. All family would have been born in Newfoundland. Reuben A. Barnes Age 26 Hilda (Thornhilda) Age 25 Nellie Age 4 Frank (Francis) Age 3 Augustus Age 1 I'm hoping to locate where this family lived so that I can find out what schools are in the area in order to find the records for Frank Barnes. Thank you very much for your help. It's greatly appreciated. Beth Farrar in Montreal

I love it, Thanks for answering Rosalie in Bar Harbor, Me. To ROSER-------my real name is Alodie. All censuses taken after 1920 are still confidential and the information they contain is not open to the public. The census from 1790 through 1840 only named the head of the household and the numbers of people in categories - 3 males over 16, 2 males under 16, etc. The census from 1850 through 1920 lists each member of the household and usually gives the relationship to the head of the house. It also gives age (later years give birth month and year) and place of birth (usually just the state or foreign country). The 1890 census was almost totally destroyed by fire so there is a 20 year gap between 1880 and 1900. ============================== Visit Ancestry.com for a FREE 14-Day Trial and enjoy access to the #1 Source for Family History Online. I'm searching for Simon Dyer. In 1864, he enlisted in the Army and listed his place of residence as North Berwick, York County, Maine. I would appreciate any census information I can get from this. His father's name was also Simeon Dyer and depending on the time period, the family would have lived in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. If anyone could help me, I would be eternally grateful! Thank you! B. Dingman Histcreatr@aol.com

Hi. A little detective work and I found this through searching for Helen Marr. One never knows! Glad to help. And it looks like you may have found another source for info. Great! I don't personally know anybody with any other of the censuses', but maybe somebody on the list will pick up on this. Many thanks to you (Riwilak@aol.com) - that was helpful information and answered a couple of questions. May I make another request - the Joseph Green Merrill you found was the father of Joseph Greenwood Hill. I had assumed Joe II was in Yarmouth - apparently not. Would you be kind enough - is there a way, if not inconvenient, to see if there are any other Joseph Greenwood Merrill's in ME for 1880? He would've been married to Helen Marr Drinkwater Merrill. Both died after the 1880 census and to my knowledge, they didn't leave Maine. Again, thank you. One more question - would you know if anyone has any other censuses from 1850-1920? With appreciation, Nancy
